Help with adding new Pokémon sprites to Fire Red with HMA

I'm trying to use HexManiacAdvance to edit a Fire Red ROM, to replace one of the empty slots between Celebi and Treecko with a new sprite (a male version of Kangaskhan). I'm having problems, I've watched Starstruck Shiny's video about HMA image editing, and looked up other sources online, but no one talks about the specific issues I'm facing so I thought I'd post here.

I found a fanmade sprite on Google, I edited it from 288x288 pixels to be 64x64 pixels via Photoshop, to make it usable for HMA, and then I imported it in. The smart and cautious options gave me problems: they both retained a white background in the battle sprite, and the cautious one also made the sprite black and white. The greedy option turned out fine, even though it said it would break 49 other sprites, so let me know if this is relevant and if I can fix it.

    Spoiler: There it is

The problem is that the sprite was kinda small, which makes the Pokémon look goofy and makes it harder for me to fix the sprite using HMA.
I tried to fix it opening my original 288x288 png in Photoshop, scaling up the Kangaskghan manually, and still resizing the pic to 64x64 pixels. I then imported it using all 3 options.

Spoiler: Both the smart and the greedy options gave me this problem:

The cautious option produces a similar result while also making the sprite black and white.

Do you guys have any ways to fix this? Thanks in advance.
