    Hey,
I bought HeartGold last week and have had alot of fun playing. I think my team is forming up well, but I'd like some advice on it, I feel it may have a few if not many weak spots. Here it is:

    Feraligatr lvl.37
    -Surf
    -Crunch
    -Ice Fang
    -Blizzard

    Magmar lvl. 36
    -Lava Plume
    -Fire Blast
    -Fire Punch
    -Focus Punch

    Ampharos lvl. 37
    -Thunderpunch
    -Thunder
    -Thundershock
    -Discharge

    Xatu lvl. 37
    -Shadow Ball
    -Pluck
    -Fly
    -Psycho Shift

    Phanpy lvl. 23 (just caught)
    -Flail
    -Take Down
    -Rollout
    -Iron Tail

Assuming this is for in-game only and not for competitive battling, you'll want to have this moved into the in-game section.

As for your team, it looks pretty good and you cover a majority of types to fight against, however you need a few moves changed your first three Pokemon, particularly Ampharos, as having four electric moves is unwise, when you could have moves from other types to cover different types.

You've got some good pokemon there, you just have to play to their strengths

For instance, Feraligatr has a high attack stat but a lower spAtk stat, so you'll want to teach him physical moves

    I would recommend teaching him:
    -Waterfall
-Ice Punch (Ice fang works until you find the move tutor)
-Earthquake (Crunch might help with the E4)
    -Swords Dance/ Dragon Dance

Ampharos, on the other hand, has a higher spAtk so you'll want to use special moves on him.

The moveset I used last was:
    -Discharge
    -Focus Blast
    -Thunder Wave
    -Signal Beam

Magmar's Attack and spAtk are pretty close, so a mix of physical and special moves works well here. However, if you plan on evolving him, his spAtk becomes his prominent trait, so you'll want to use some special moves.

Other than that, everything else looks good. I usually use a bug-type move on a Xatu just for some more type coverage, but that's up to you.
