How do you train your 6th pokemon?

    Well what I mean is, I usually have one HM slave. I teach him all the HM's I don't want my main guys to know (Cut, Flash, Rock Smash, etc.) so I'm restricted to 5 other Pokemon in my party.

    What I want to know is, I want a 6th Pokemon as well, what should I do if I want an HM slave with me when I'm adventuring as well? What do you guys do?

    Use your 6th slot for some other pokemon untill the requirement for the HM slave arises.
     
    When the requirement comes for an HM slave, then my 6th guy will miss out on exp. from trainers and stuff, no?

    I'm sure it wouldn't make much of a difference

    I did that with my team on my Platinum, like in the victory road

    After we got out of it, I just deposited my HM Slave, got my Lucario and went back him and battled the rest of the trainers that I dogded
     
    well seeing as i noramlly do not use HM slaves, i actually teach my teams the HM moves i always have my full team in my party
     
    I use all 6 pokemon in my team, no HM slaves.
    I only teach HMs that are useful to my pokemon like surf, strength, rock climb.
    Then on Victory road I teach my pokemon the HMs I need to know to get through it, once I make it to the Elite Four I clean out all the HMs and teach my pokemon all new moves.
     
    You could in fact teach each of your fighting Pokemon one machine each, I at least know I don't find a need for a full set of four moves.
