How many Pokemon are in the Diamond/Pearl games for DS?
How many Pokemon are in the FireRed/LeafGreen Games for GBA?

Is it possible to get all the Pokemon by just owning Diamond and Pearl?
Is it possible to get all the Pokemon by just owning FireRed and LeafGreen?
By this I mean, by just having the Diamond and Pearl versions and trading between them.

I know that many of the game series are compatible with each other, but having only played the original Red-Blue games, I know next to nothing about the new game series.
I don't want to buy one series only to find out that I can't get all possible Pokemon without having to buy into a second series.

If that question is somewhat confusing, here is a simpler version...

    I get FR and LG.
Will I be missing out on anything by not trading with another series (say... D/P)?

You cannot complete the entire Pokedex with only FRLG, and certainly not DP. Game Freak/Nintendo has made it so you have to not only purchase all the titles (FRLG, RS, Emerald, DP, Colosseum, XD), but there are also certain Pokes you can only acquire through cheating or through Nintendo themselves.

That is 191 out of 386 (or almost half) that you must trade in from other games. That doesn't even include the DP Pokes coming out next month.

Rough... So it's impossible to get all Pokemon from a single series now.

I liked it better with just Blue-Red on my old-school Game Boy...
I guess I'll just erase my games and start over.
My DS has wanted a Pokemon game for a while now, but that just deflated my excitement.
I won't fall prey to a vicious marketing ploy that requires me to buy new systems and a multitude of games just to have one perfect file.

Yep... Blue-Red here I come again!

Also, to answer your "simpler" question, yes you will certainly be missing out if you only buy FR/LG.

Collecting all of the Pokemon isn't the entire point of the games. Diamond and Pearl, aside from a new region to explore, provide Wi-Fi support. Not being able to battle/trade with friends across the internet would mean you would be missing out. In my opinion, at least.

While it isn't the entire point, I cannot play a game and not strive for perfect.
With Blue-Red, the old 151 was and is perfect.
The Wi-fi for D/P is what spurred me to start looking into the franchise again, but now I'm not too sure.

Hm. When they release I'll give it a bit more thought.

Wait... what the heck are event pokemon??
I've been out of the pokemon scene way long it seems.
Seems like only yesterday I was getting my gameboy conviscated for playing in class...
Now I'm all grow'd up and pokemon has too... leaving me in le dust!

    That sounds like fun times.
Like the Murky vanity pet in World of Warcraft, except actually useful.
I can live without ones like that, but wouldn't mind resorting to a Gameshark at some point.
I live in Trinidad when I'm not at school in Canada, so the likelihood of me getting one like that are just about zip.
