How to get a charmander?

Sorry this question has been probably asked a thousand times.

But i want to get a charmander into my Pearl version.

I dont have the national pokedex yet, and havent seen all 150 pokemon.

But surely i can get a charmander before that, as i want one now to use to train before the pokemon league?

I currently only have two badges, but would like a charmander just now, rather than waiting till i have completed the game, as that is pointless!
