You want to learn how to index an image? Here's how!
What you'll need:
-Irfanview
-Paint XP
type it up on Google.
Step 1: Background
Step 2: Irfanview
Then hit save. Name it something like [Yourname]Almost indexed
Step 3: Getting the colors right
What you'll need:

Open your image in paint XP and make the background of your image a color thats not in it. I choose green as its not in my sprite.
Save it and name it something like [Yourname]unindexed.

Step 2: Irfanview
Spoiler:
Open your unindexed image up in Irfanview and hit Image>Decrease Color Depth. Choose 16 colors and uncheck Floyd Steinberg Dithering.
Then hit Image>Palette>Edit palette
Swap your background color and the first color around. it should look messed-up

Open up the messed-up image in Paint XP and goto Edit>Paste from
Select the unindexed image.
SAVE! you're done. right click on your image and click properties>information and bit-depth must be at 4 or else you have done something wrong!
