2nd Gen How to use Mystery Gift?

I'm ready to scream right now. No matter how I line up my 3DSs, it never works! I can have the IR ports TOUCHING EACH OTHER and press the buttons at the same time and it still doesn't do anything. I have been trying to get it to work for THREE HOURS. Please, please tell me how to do Mystery Gift!

Have you pressed and held the A button for about a second or two? Took me a while at first but hasn't failed me much since.

It worked when I did that! Thanks! I also found it easier to line up the IR Ports by setting up both 3DS systems on a sheet of line paper with the IR Port in the middle of a line.
