As I'm sure most of you know, RBY are being re-released on the 3DS eShop next year, and there seems to be a fair amount of hype on this board re: that release. Moving beyond people who spend their time chatting about gen I and gen II on internet forums, though, how well do you think the re-released games will be received? I can imagine that a lot of nostalgic older fans might want to return to the series, and some people who haven't played since the RBY era might be tempted to pick up a copy of one of the games (if they own a 3DS), but outside of people who have played the series faithfully for nearly 20 years, how much do you think these re-releases will catch on? And will they be popular among players who entered the franchise at a later date and never played RBY, or will the older graphics and game mechanics be too much of a turn-off?
This sort of release, especially with addition of wireless trading, seems like it could set a precedent for the release of more titles of this sort (like GSC). Thus, the success of its reception may play an important role in shaping whether we see more titles like this in the future. Pokemon took the world by storm two decades ago; what sort of effect do you think this blast to the past will have on its popularity? If you played the original RBY, what makes you want to (or not want to) re-experience those games? And if you've never played RBY, what excites you most (or turns you off) about playing these re-releases?
