I want to play competitively, so what are the usual rules for competitive play? are all 6 pokemon usually used? is 2v2 an option?
and does this snorlax sound dangerous?
    Snorlax:

    fling (holding an iron ball)
    double edge
    belly drum
    rest

I'm thinking snorlax is the pokemon that can withstand several turns for a build up, especially with rest

I have fling in case I run into ghost pokemon, and I'd like to think that not many fighters can survive a double edge after belly drum
and if there are 2v2 battles I'll replace fling with yawn

oops, my computer was glitching, I didnt mean to post a double, this is the one I want to keep.

not always the six are used
most people play by standard clauses in the OU environment(check tier discussion)
    2v2 is an option
    that snorlax dies

just go out there and first try to win with your favourites. then see what goes wrong and try to improve. make sure you understand IVs and EV-training. but don't go for a 'winners team' right away, it spoils the fun i think. i mean, everyone has almost the same team lately, it's boring :)

but if you do go for the winning team, check out the discussion they've just started in this post: https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/131727
snorlax could be a good physical wall then.

In Pearl you can catch one in Eterna Forest. If you have diamond check out GTS or the trade board on this forum.

By the way; do read about EVs, also when you're going to play with your favourites.
