3rd Gen I'm a bit... how you say?... stuck

I realize that I could easily just Google a walkthrough for Sapphire/Ruby and find my answer. HOwever, skimming walkthroughs trying to find one thing always gets on my nerves. So, I figured, why do that when I'm on a Pokemon community that could easily help, right?

Well, I'm playing Ruby and I got a bit stuck. I got past the first four gyms and collected the Go-Goggles from May. I went through the dessert and collected my fossil. I thought that you had to go through the dessert to get to the next place (and maybe you do and there's just something I'm missing?) however, I couldn't find an exit to a place that I haven't been to yet. I've already beat Team Magma, collected the meteorite, taken it to the guy, etc. etc. I thought, maybe, I would have to use strength to go somewhere... but am going crazy trying to find out where that would be. It's been years since I played. So, I can't remember what I did after beating the fourth gym.

Help?

Head back to Petalburg, battle Norman at the Gym, get Surf from Wally's parents, head east from Mauville, and you should be set.

The fifth gym leader is your father in the game, Norman. It seems odd that the fifth leader is back in Petalburg, but it makes sense really.

So, yeah, just head back to Petalburg City, beat Norman, and it's pretty obvious what you do now.

It does seem odd that the fifth gym is in Petalburg. But, I guess it does make a little sense. If you think about it.
