I've read of an interesting theory online that has popped up quite a bit on my Facebook feed. It is the idea that we are in fact the antagonist of Gen VII (the "Gary", if you will), and Hau is the equivalent to the protagonist we have embodied in past games.
This idea stems from the following "evidence":
- Unlike previous games, the Pokemon we choose is super effective against Hau's choice. Normally, this is vice-versa, where the rival we face has the stronger Pokemon
- Hau's personality is akin to that of Ash in the anime, who - while wanting to succeed - is more in it for the fun of training
- Hau owns a Pikachu, similar to Red (and Ash)
I for one find it an interesting fan theory. I also really like Hau's character in general, and I find it interesting that the starter pairing was swapped this gen'. I know this happened somewhat similarly in X&Y with the multi-rival situation, but this is the first time a one-on-one rival situation has granted the favourable Pokemon to us, the player.
I don't know how much weight this theory holds, but it is an interesting share.
