is it possible to survive using selfdestruct?

My friends little brother claims that he can survive using selfdestruct by holding an item.(forgot what it was called.but it would leave you with only 1HP.)

There's a house on Northern Route 221 (near Pal Park), and the guy inside will ask to see a Pokemon of a certain level. Give him what he needs, and he will give you either a Focus Sash, Expert Belt, or Black Belt. You can do this once a day.

Actually, I don't think Focus Sash works when used with Explosion/Sefldestruct. It's a good theory, but it doesn't work. For proof, go to Youtube and search "Focus Sash Explosion".
