    I am having trouble getting an awesome team worth going to the Pokemon Video Game World Championships

    You may want to take a look at the board, Pokémon Strategies & Movesets. You'll find stickies on how to make a team, and also find a great guide to explain EVs. As for IVs, Serebii has a great explanation of it here. Other than that, this isn't the write section to ask for team help when it comes to something competitive. As for in-game, then you the rule of thumb is to use whatever you like as anything will work well in-game.
