spoilers are just in case no one had seen the DP League

Having a conversation with Mew~ sparked this topic up.

Do you think we'll see any of the League rivals again?

    Tyson, Morrison, Harrison and Tobias.

I personally don't think we'll see any of them again; mainly because they're just there to give a good battle. Tobias didn't get a backstory unlike the others, although they didn't have a really important one. Tyson had his Meowth capturing one, whilst Harrison had his Hoenn experience. Tobias, however didn't get one, why do you think this was? Was it so the writers have something to work with if they do bring him back? I personally think it was because they wanted him to remain mysterious throughout the competition so they kept his Pokemon [Bar Darkrai]/Identity/Backstory a secret.

Thoughts and such. Note; not just Tobias should be discussed, he was just an example.

Right well, as far as I'm aware, I couldn't really care less about Tyson, Morrison and Harrison. I can't see them returning at all. As for Tobias though, I think thats a whole different story.

As far as I can see, Tobias is primarily the closest Mary Sue/Gary Stu (look it up) we've gotten in the anime. A party with legendaries, going through the Sinnoh league without Darkrai even being knocked out once. That is until it came to Ash. Ash did manage to beat Tobias which is notable against the Mary Sue theory, but still beat the hero (has happened before though, but arguable, differently) and really, only had two of his Pokémon knocked out. We didn't really have any backstory on him, dragonomega already noted some of the points I gave him about the others information, but it is also notable that his character should stay mysterious with no backstory. Ritchie should also be noted if you ask me. You could call him a little different from the other rivals, but honestly, we could have never seen him again to be honest, but the writers put him into Johto, which I think was great. Since they left off with him beating Ash, only because Ash's Charizard got bored and went to sleep, which you could mirror with Tobias being overpowered. Ritchie did get those specials, but that's going a little too far for a character like Tobias.

Now, if Ash does get any closer in his reclaimed dream to become a Pokémon master. We need Tobias to return, I mean seriously. Ash would have to beat Tobias, who is probably the strongest trainer we've really ever seen in the anime. I can't really go into this much more, as it isn't really a strong point to this discussion considering how the writers handle this show. But try and still take that it into consideration, if the writers go somewhere if Ash. D:

I need to be careful contradicting myself, I know this reply is a little messy.

I think this is a good point. As like I said before, a Mary Sue. It works well against him returning aswell.

As long as there are come backs, I am happy, but its just not the thing that happens in Pokemon. I am talking about League Rival. I always wanted to see that Tobias back. I just wanted Ash to have his revenge :D

As for the background story thingy....I preferred it when they didn't reveal a thing about Tobias. He is not the kind of friendly dude, he isn' the person you can directly approach. Harrison and Tyson were discussed since they both became friends of Ash.

However since Ash and Tobias were just Acquaintance, don't expect much out of Tobias. Leaving him out made him more mysterious and professional. I still do believe one of the reasons he wasn't discussed was due to the fact he was only a tool to stall Ash. Not a friend or anything like others, just a tool...

I don't see Tobias any more likely to show up then any of the other mentioned ones, just because he lacked some minor back story. I'm a lot more concerned about seeing Paul again in the future then any of the ones mentioned outside of Richie. I don't even know how they would work any these characters, cause seeing them again in another standard league would seem mah. I mean are they going to try and screw Ash over again with the same characters? I would like too see them in some sort of interregional tournament were they have various trainers from multiple regions take part in it and too get in to at least qualify you would have to compete in various leagues have a good performance in multiple ones and so forth. So then they could have all the previous League Rivals again add Paul and Trip and probably not Gary since he is not a professor(unless he just comes out of retirement just for this).

I wouldlove to see Tobias and Harrison show up again as they had amazing battles with Ash. But I don't think they'l reappear as they were kind of Charecters of the Day just throught out the tournement. Stephen, Luke, and Langley are probably going to be future rivals and even Iris as SPOILERS she won the Don Battle Tournement. We have a chance at seeing tobias as he was just in Sinnoh, and as for the rest we haven't seen them for 2 reigons now. I'd like it if any of the older LEague Rivals show up but I dont really see it happening.

I think for one Paul will comeback for a league, dunno if in BW or future ones but he will come back. He is a fan favourite and provides some epic battling and the way his story is set out is that he has to follow Ash unless he goes to some unknown region. If it is in BW, you know he and Trip are gonna have to battle and it's gonna be Paul just pwning him.

Richie is gonna come back, they added too much for him to not come back if you know what I mean.

Paul will never battle Trip are even beat him in a battle, besides Paul will never return anyways since he was only a DP character rival,it is not like he was important or anything like that.

So your writer now or apart of the episode development team? If not then where did you get your confirmation from? Yeah's it's not like he was important, which is why they placed so much focus on the rivalry between the two and their clashing ideologies of how to train and treat pokemon through out the series. Cause I mean that is of minimal importance right?

Did i ever said i was a writer or part of the development team?I think not. The only reason why Ash and Paul had a rivalry in the first place, was due to how Paul treated Chimchar and his pokemon.

So then how do you know Paul will never return ever? Cause it sure sounds like you are stating it as a fact of a matter. Ash had a rivalry since he meet Paul at Rowan lab and tied vs. Elekid. Chimchar just intensified the rivalry to another degree. Too me Paul has more of a chance returning then any of the League rivals mentioned even Richie, he brought in my mind more to the table in terms of story then all of them combined. Paul has already competed in just as many leagues in the various regions as Ash has, so I see no reason for them not to meet up in one of the leagues or regions on of these days. Or at some grand super league of sorts.

Well there is nothing saying he will comeback either since Ash and Paul rivalry ended at the Sinnoh league.

Trip is Ash's rival now,not Paul anymore.

Gary is no longer Ash key rival yet he has been shown in all Sagas. So just because his second main rival isn't the one they are currently focusing doesn't make him any less like to appear than anyone else being discussed in this topic. And Paul is still keen on battling unlike Gary, so I be more inclined to see him in competition as well.

And yeah that's kind of obvious, just like Gary wasn't after he became a professor.

As for other people outside of a of those two I'd like too see the three sons as I call them Harrison, Tyson, Morrison as some sort of RS remake involvement. I'd rather see them then say May or Max. Although if we did see them I'd imagine it would be in a tournament setting.

Well Gary was the first original rival, which is the reason why he appear in both the AG and DP sagas.

Who knows how many rivals the Unova league will have.
