... Oh, didn't see you there.

So, this is how this is gonna work. I'm a huge writer, and I love it, but the problem is that I have no time to write. Which poses as a problem to a writer.
But, I heard something on the rules thread that vaguely referenced a writer taking up to a month to write a single chapter, and I plan to take advantage of that. Granted, I'm not going to be a complete idiot about it, but writing updates for my story might take a little more time than it should.
So, onto the actual "story"...
This is a story about pokemon. And about reality. And about pokemon being a reality. Basically, we follow maybe... 4 people through a world where pokemon actually exist and we've somehow managed to screw it up. These 4 people try to fix it with their one (1) pokemon.
I'll be sure to post character bios soon enough.
So, without further ado, I'm going to start it off with chapter one.
Chp. 1
Nik lays down in his bed, with his beloved Cubone, nicknamed "Cash", warming itself in its cage with a big TEAM ROCKET splattered across the glass. Why not a pokéball? Well, their outlawed.
Back in 1972, people (mostly organizations trying to exploit the natural power of Pokémon) eventually started to press the issue that Pokémon are dangerous. Others argued that Pokémon have the potential to be dangerous, but only in the hands of a dangerous trainer. Despite these claims, the battling, coordinating, and breeding was outlawed to all civilians. The only way a Pokémon could breed is in a carefully observed artificial habitat. The Pokémon don't breed much anymore.
In addition, even the owning of Pokémon was severely limited. Sadly, everyone who owned more than one Pokémon had to choose which one they wanted to keep, while the others were put to sleep. To date, every household is allowed to own one Pokémon, and the said Pokémon is to be kept outside of any sort of pokéball.
Eventually in 1983, the ultimate Pokémon organization, Team Rocket attempted to completely buy out the United States government. When that didn't work, they simply attacked. Bullets could not pierce the skin of most of the Pokémon, and since Pokémon were scarce for anyone but the organizations, the government was overthrown.
Now, today, Team Rocket owns most of the world. Everywhere they don't own is a Pokémon haven. Nik happens to live in the haven parts. Well, he did.
ONE WEEK AGO
A father stares at a television screen. Only, this television only displayed static. Father meddled with several wires, and eventually, with the right movements, attained a decent television signal.
Father: PERFECT! Man, I just KNEW getting a signal from the Rocket Wastes would be easy enough.
Mother fidgets in her seat awkwardly.
Mother: But… What if Team Rocket catches you on their signal?
Father: Impossible. It's a signal. There's no way that they can track it back to us.
Just as he says that, the television turns on. All that is available is Team Rocket propaganda.
Father is disgusted.
Father: … I don't feel like watching television anymore.
They leave.
As they leave the room, the TV abruptly changes to static.
Both, mother and father, walk out into a Pokémon utopia. Flygon and Spearow populate the skies, and father/son duo Diglett and Dugtrio dominate the grounds. In the front yard, they find their children, Nikolas and Lillian, playing with the family Pokémon, Kangaskahn. Mother rubs her enlarged stomach softly, as if showing her unborn child what waits for him.
Father: … *sigh* I can't wait until Nik gets a little older. I also can't wait for little Cash to join the family, too.
Mother: Why not just give Nik his first Pokémon now?
Father: … Kangaskahn is our family Pokémon. We can't just depart with her like that. Besides… I'm not even sure if Kangaskahn are on the legal list…
Mother: Well… I don't know how much more time out little haven here has left. We have to learn to cope with Team Rocket eventually.
Father: … Well, that's going to be a long, long time from now.
The next night, like the spirit of death himself, a gunshot is fired. Father wakes up and grabs his shotgun. Kangaskahn follows. Nik, out of curiosity, follow secretly.
Team Rocket waits. About 3 members. Each armed with a gun. Father attempts to scare them away, but it doesn't work. As they attack, Nik runs to Kangaskahn. She simply takes her child out from her pouch, and hands him to Nik. She then jumps and releases all of her rage on Team Rocket. Nik attempts to run back inside, only to find a Team Rocket grunt setting it on fire.
Nik attempts to signal the other Pokémon to help, they Pokémon that take refuge here, but none replied. No Pokémon, not even the nocturnal ones, are there. Nik, in complete fear and confusion, runs for cover. Once safe, gripping Kangaskahn's baby tight, he finds Kangaskahn attempting to put out the fire by kicking dirt on the house, which proves to be a fruitless endeavor. Soon, Team Rocket gains the upper hand, and Kangaskahn collapses. The fire destroyed the house, and unfortunately, everyone inside it. Nik doesn't know where his father is, and Kangaskahn is deceased. Team Rocket leaves. By this time, the accelerated decaying time of Pokémon has reduced poor Kangaskahn to bones.
Nik views in complete fear of everything that has happened.
Baby Kangaskahn waddles over to his mother.
Nik starts tearing at the sight of baby Cash's room, being the only thing not destroyed by the fire.
Baby Kangaskahn strokes the spine of his mother. He collects a femur, a rib, and her spine.
Nik closes his eyes, and picks up his father's dropped shotgun. He turns to his partner.
Baby Kangaskahn simply slides on the skull of his mother. He holds his mother's femur. He turns to Nik.
Nik: … Ready to go, Cash?
Cash nods silently. They walk into the darkness of the night.
Now, Nik and Cash are in an orphanage. They have been for the past week. This is only for food and shelter, though. Today is the day they plan to break out. Cash has a little trick where he hides his mother's various bones somewhere, out of view. But, he can reveal them at any time. Nik has never tried to figure it out, nor will he ever. However, now, it was convenient.
Nik sits up.
Nik: Ready, Cash?
Cash nods. He uses the femur to open the lid of the cage slightly. As soon as Nik confirms this, he starts screaming bloody murder.
A worker runs in to see the issue. As she comforts Nik, he smiles, and like lightning, she is knocked unconscious by a flying rib bone. Nik takes her key, and walks out, with Cash not far behind. He unlocks the door to every child's bedroom, which throws the staff into frenzy. Cash hops on Nik's back, and they attempt to run out of the building.
Nik: We're gonna make it, Cash! We're gonna do it this time!
But before Cash can throw the Bonemerang to break open a window at the end of the hall, grassy locks of Hair lassoes Nik's limbs.
Behind him, the orphanage warden shakes his head with his trusty Tangela slowly pulling Nik in. Nik struggles, but to no end.
Warden: *sigh*… You have no idea how much you've gotten yourself into now, Nikolas.
Just as he finishes his taunt, a rub bone cuts the vines, and as it returns, breaks open the window. Nik shakes himself free, and with Cash returning to his back, they escape to the streets.
