2nd Gen Multipile Question Help

Hi. I'm new to this forum. and I needed some help with my Silver game.
So I decided to ask people on a poke-forum.Here's my questions:
Please note that all these questions are from R/B/Y-S/C/G only.
(Like dont say evolve your Murkrow into a Honchkrow)
Please answer them and if possible, fill out why.

1.Which is better:Gyarados or Lapras?

~As a side note, I am very picky on my team, like genders,stats, level balance, w/e..

~*What I mean by defence/support pokemon is a pokemon with a strong defense which can use status moves (Sleep powder,thunder wave,hypnosis,etc..) as well as to defend the other team with defence moves(Light Screen, Softboiled,Safeguard).You can disagree with me here if you don't like my idea.~

And if you are wondering, here is my current team and their stats; constructive criticism is encouraged :)

Typhlosion Lv.54- Earthquake,Thunderpunch,FlameWheel,QuickAttack
Typhlosion's Spec.Att is highest
Pidgeot Lv.52- Protect,Wing Attack,Fly,Agility
Pidgeot's Speed and Spec.att is highest(although well balanced stats)
Ampharos Lv.53-Headbutt,Thunderpunch,ThunderWave,Light Screen
Amhparos' Spec.att and Spec.def is highest
RED Gyarados LV.51- Trash, Surf, Rain Dance, HyperBeam
Gyarados' speed and attack is highest
Dragonair Lv.51-Slam,Waterfall,Safeguard,Thunderwave
Dragonair's attack is highest


Another quick question:Does happiness affect the stats after a level up?
(I make a lot of sacrifice kills during battles)

4.Best 'defence/support' pokemon?
Main Answer:Shuckle or Steelix
Supporting Answer(Why): Shuckle has the highest defense, but Steelix hits harder
