Mystery Gift?

Hi, I'm new. The last Pokemon game I played was Pokemon Yellow. Awesome game, brings back memories.

One of those memories is the Mystery Gift feature. Back then, we use a "link cable" to attach Gameboy Colors together. My sister and I would use this feature to get free random items.

I also remember in Pokemon Stadium N64, if you attach your GB catridge to your game pad, you can get a Mystery Gift from Pokemon Stadium. Only once a day of course.

Now my sister and I have White and Black. I've been Googling through and realized that the Mystery Gift feature is now different. You can use WiFi connection to get free stuff off the net, during events. Is that right?

Well, is there still a way, getting back to the good old days, to get Mystery Gifts (random items) just by linking two Gameboys (I mean DS's) together? I'm confused and agitated that I can't find a way to do this.

In my DS, I load the game, click "Mystery Gift" >> "Recieve Gift" >> "Get ViA Wireless" or "Get Via Nintendo WFC" or "Get Infrared". Says no Mystery Gift found while having two DS's near eachother.

I'm lost.

TLD;; Can I still send\recieve random Mystery Gifts by linking DS's together, like in the old days? Yes/no. If Yes, then how?

I don't believe you can give items through Mystery Gift, but then again I never tried. The only thing I have used Mystery Gift for as of late is getting Items like Liberty pass to activate Victini event or going and downloading Wonder Cards for other events.
