Nature and characteristic question

    Hi ive bred an eevee to evolve into an umbreon, i was planning to ev train in defence and sp. defence. it has a Lax nature so it increases defence but decreases sp.def, but it has the characteristic 'hates to loose' which i red that that characteristic would raise sp.def. would this just cancel it out?
