Need a training tip.

New to forums, not to the game. I do have a question, though. I'm trying to round out a competitive team. I'm currently working on training my Tyranitar. His moveset is Earthquake, Crunch, and the Substitute-Focus Punch combo. I'm currently EV training him and have a dilemma. Either way, his attack stat is going to be at LEAST 330 (without even using any vitamins), and if I EV train the hell out of him, looking towards 360+ upon reaching level 100. His nature is Brave, meaning a + in ATK and a - in Speed. My dilemma is what to do about his defense. I've been trying to compare the importance of Special Defense to regular Defense for him. I could round them evenly, but that would result in both being pretty low. It seems most physical attacks pose problems, but a lot of special attack types wreck him. I'm not sure whether to go all out on ATK and HP and not worry about defenses (doesn't seem like a good idea ATM), or should I invest what EVs I will have left after maxing ATK and HP (if I should do this) in one or the other, and if so, which one would be better? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I would say give T-tar more Special Defense than Defense, it would tank it to make it more resistant, Defense is already high enough, still give it some in defense

    252 ATK/ 80 DEF/ 172 SP. DEF

Ok, while I'm no n00b and I know how to EV train, I forget the total number of EVs to distribute. Is that all of them? Meaning don't bother with the HP? Forgive any ignorance on my part, my weakness happens to be math, so talking to me in "Stat" numbers (and number of vitamins to use especially) rather than the actual number of EVs is more fit for me :P

*EDIT* Also a little curious about my Scizor. Not sure what to base him around (and thus what nature Scizor I should use). Attack obviously, but due to his troubles in other stat areas, I figured Speed might be the best way to go as far as his other main stat, working a little on Special Defense (I don't think normal Defense is an issue much with a steel type). Could use a bit of advice on this also.

I personally wouldn't work on Scizor Special Defense, because even with it he can probably get killed by his Fire Weakness which is 400% to him. I'd work on his Attack, Defense and Speed. And the maximum EVs you can put in a Pokemon is 510. So... 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 Defense would work.

First up, you DO need HP ev's for tyranitar, i'll give you the correct EV spread. Also, I suggest re-breeding for adamant nature. Second up, his special defenses get boosted by 1.5 because of the sand storm that he starts (all pokemon that don't take damage in sandstorm get a 1.5 boost in special defense). Here is the set I reccomend.

Though this is for choice band tyranitar which I reccomend over your set, here is CBtar set:

    Tyranitar @ Choice Bnad
    Nature: Adamant
    Trait: Sand Stream
    EV's:60 HP / 252 Atk / 196 Spd
    -Crunch
    -Pursuit
    -Earthquake
    -Stone Edge

Stabbed stone edge with CB hurts hard.

Thanks for the recommendation. I honestly like my own style better, but I'm perfectly willing to look into this one. I don't have the Fire Red/Leaf Green guide, so I need to ask: can Tyranitar can learn Pursuit in Fire Red? I don't own R/S/E ATM and I really don't want to have to buy one (although I could if I had to).

    Thanks for all the help.

I haven't looked it up yet, perhaps I forgot (since before D/P I took a long time off for Pokemon), but what does STAB mean?

It is an egg move, you have to breed for it. You can get it in D/P, I don't know about FR/LG. If you give me something good, I might be able to breed you one...

    Same
    Type
    Attack
    Bonus

Meaning: If and Ursaring used Facade it would get boosted damage, because the move type is the same type as the Pokemon. A Blastoise using Surf would also get a STAB. I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure that STAB boosts it by 50%. So a Facade from Ursaring actually has 105 Power. And a Surf from Blastoise actually has 142.5 Power. I think... xD

    Stab boosts a pokemon's attack by 1.5.

Ah, I was looking in my D/P guide and didn't see it as an egg move, but I obviously missed it. Thanks. Now I suppose I have 2 Tyranitars I can work on.

Lemonade... thanks for boosting my memory. As I suspected, just something I forgot.

Thanks for all the help once again. Now to the hard part (for me)... calculating the precise amount of EVs. Can someone perhaps refresh my memory as to how many EVs a vitamin (Carbos, etc.) gives?

    Ten each. 100 all together.

So I'm guessing Adamant nature might be the best.

    Thanks, sims.

I'm telling you you already have a special defense boost, no need to put EV's in special defense and defense. The total number of EV's to distribute is 510 and in my CBtar set, the spread uses all ev's. Just scizors HP and def/sp def (or 100 in both) and then use it as a SDpasser if you want to.

I may have misunderstood your post a little bit. Are you suggesting a nature that ups Special Defense? And furthermore, go with Attack and either Defense or Special Defense and ignore speed? If I misinterpreted the post, I apologize.

First up, what I mean is just go with the spread I gave you.

Their it is I guess, just quoted it again.

Okay, I've taken some time to train, and based on some of these suggestions, I have 2 (hopefully final) questions. First off, is it really worth it to EV train Tyranitar in speed? Even with maxing out his speed, he will end up with speed in the low 200's at best, and I doubt it's going to beat out much with that kind of speed. Wouldn't it be just better to go all Attack and HP/Def/SP Def? Second, I've seen two good examples of Scizor, and I'm in a dilemma. Attack/Speed or Attack/Defense (Swords Dancer)... which would be better? If it comes down to preference, I can surely make that decision on my own. Perhaps it depends on your team. I already have 2 walls so I might be better off with the speed version. On the other hand, I also already have 2 Pokemon based on Speed and Power, so now I'm thinking the defensive Scizor might be better. This is a tough decision. Thanks for any suggestions.
