So, long story short - I'm older now and back when pokemon blue and red came out I was all over it. It was some of the best gaming memories I had being a kid. Coming to school with my old game boy color. Duct tape holding my battery cover on, trading with friends and battling them for bragging rights.
So here I am now with a 3 year old little girl. Trying to get her into Season 1 of the pokemon TV series. Anyways all this pokemon around is getting me in the nostalgic mood and I want to go back and play some of the old gameboy games. Now after red blue and yellow I get kind of lost in all the mess that is now pokemon. I played a little silver I think but if I played it right now it would be like playing it for the first time. So I guess what I am asking for is someone to catch me up. Ideally I would like to play a version of the 1st games(red blue or yellow) 2nd games(silver gold or crystal) and so on. Can someone tell me the best way to go through all of the generations, pick the best game to play in each generation, and any other neat tidbits about the series or important information I should know regarding the games. It would be nice if there was one game to play them all! Unfortunately that is not the case! Also which hand held nintendo system would serve as the best one to use for ALL of the games? I've been out of the game for a while, help me out!
    Thanks everyone!

There are remakes for the first two generations (Red/Blue one is on GBA and Gold/Silver on DS), I'd recommend getting those instead of the old games, because then you could play both on a regular DS or DS Lite (not DSi).

So with those out of the way, you'd probably have the 3rd and 4th generations left. For the 3rd I'd say just get Emerald version and 4th, Platinum.

    i agree.
but if you want instead of geting old gold/silver you could just get the new versions of Heart Gold and Soul Silver, with all the bonus features and stuff :)

Not to mention a LOT of old copies of Gold/Silver don't work anymore because of the internal battery/clock (that happened to BOTH of my games T__T).

So, I can play the remake of red or blue and silver or gold on a DS lite system? I was pricing them out on ebay. What is the advantage of emerald and platinum over the normal versions of the two? Thanks for the info, its really helping me understand where pokemon has gone since I've played.

Yes, the remakes are called FireRed and LeafGreen (Gameboy Advance) though. And the other ones are called HeartGold and SoulSilver (DS).

What is the advantage of emerald and platinum over the normal versions of the two?
Both have changes that improve the stories in them, and there are new things to do at the end like the Battle Frontier.

Whats different from the Red version to the FireRed version? I played the original so much that I knew it like the back of my hand. I could probably still go through it without trouble, even now! Is there extra content in those? So if I get a DS Lite- FireRed, HeartGold, Emerald and Platinum I should be set and caught up? I'm sure all those could last me at least a year, till any new stuff comes out! Thanks for all the help!

It has new graphics, the same features that Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald like running and a more organized bag, there's a new place to visit after the elite four (Sevii islands) and you can trade the Pokemon to those games and transfer them to the DS games. It's the same besides that.

So if I get a DS Lite- FireRed, HeartGold, Emerald and Platinum I should be set and caught up?

    Yes.

    Thanks for all the help!

    You're welcome! :D

FireRed is just a carbon-copy of Red, IMO. It also has the Sevii Islands as something to do afterwards (better not spoil it o.o). The same for HeartGold, but HGSS are slightly different storyline-wise. (again, no spoilers).
So go pick up a [cheap] DS Lite and all the games. HGSS and Pt. flood the stores these days and Emerald and FR can be gotten off eBay !

I hope I helped an old fan get back into Pokemon ! :D

So, pokemon that I have from FireRed I can transfer and use in HeartGold and the rest of them? Thats really cool! Do they listen to you at lower levels? Or am I missing somthing? I seem to remember higher level pokemon having a hard time listening to you. Am I right?

thanks 560cool, you did! Its fun getting into it again, I've always been a gamer, but its been so long since i picked up a handheld for one of my old favorite classics. Its also fun seeing my daughter get into pokemon! Makes you want to relive it all over again!

I'm pretty sure that you can only transfer GBA to DS is after the elite four, so they'll probably listen since you'd have all badges then.

And it's traded Pokemon at higher levels that won't listen.

They won't listen to you if they have a different Id Number and OT from you. (these are in the Pokemon's status screen, can't miss them). Generally, you should have all gym badges from Johto by the time you migrate from FR/Emerald, so even a MeGa ShInY Lv. 1o0 Ev'D PoWeRhOuZz will obey !
And, yes, I am glad to help ! I am also happy watching my 2-years old brother poke my screen and say "caertun !" (cartoon) whenever I play Pokemon ! :D

Also, there is a thing called shiny pokemon, they are normal, however they have stars when they come into battle and they are alternate collered, such as in hgss there is a shiny gyrados in the story, also since you've been gone the number of pokemon has grown from 150 to 493

So are they special besides stars and diff color? got my system and game coming in the mail. thx for everyone's help

Yeah, they are just really rare, one in 8100 or something
Also they added pokers which is a really cool disease that makes pokemon grow a lot better, the chances are RARER THAN SHINY, so good luck!

Certain games also have side-quest-like segment thats completely option.
For Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (RSE) and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (DPPt) they are called Pokemon Contests and its basically where you challenge 3 other trainers in a contest based on appearance, attack combonations, and in DPPt, Dance Skill. The reward for this are Ribbons that are attached to your pokemon's status screen

In HeartGold/SoulSilver (HGSS) they have minigames called the Pokeathlon where you compete in a pokemon triathalon for medals and points that can buy you rare items.
