Ok, so as of now whether a move is physical or special depends on type. That means a few things; a Pokemon of only one type can, if that type is special, never have a physical stab attack. And vice versa of course. A ruling that has haunted me as an Arcanine lover ever since RBY.

But now it's changed. =) Whether a move is physical or special now depends on the move itself. That means there are physical fire/electric/water/grass/etc. moves and special poison/ghost/bug/etc. moves. This will allow my beloved Arcanine to run a stab fire attack of it's superior physical attack stat. Other Pokemon who will have advantages here are for instance Gengar, as Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball turn special to give him two stab attacks to run of that huge special attack stat. Whereas things like Machamp can now run Fire Punch, Thunderpunch and Ice Punch of their huge physical attack stat. Other Pokemon might lose out: Alakazam obviously won't be using the punches anymore.

So, your thoughts? Happy or unhappy? Don't care? Mind you, if anything will change the competitive metagame (apart from new monsters and attacks of course) it's this.

i'm extremely happy about it. just not happy with the new pokemon is all...

I'm guessing this is meant to be a revival, as I KNOW it isn't anyhting new here, nor has it been that long since it was last discussed...well, anyway, I'm not that surprised. As I mentioned before, I knew this was coming the moment I found out about Blaze Kick (which, as far as I can think of right now, is the only physical Fire attack other than Overheat and one that Arcanine can't learn, Loyal Arcanine...so, unless there's a new attack I'm not thinking of here...). Of course I'm happy about it, as the attacks make more sense this way, but I still am saving some judgement until I try for myself...

Yeah, Im debatable whether Ill like this or not... My Latias wont change, but my Grovyle and a few others will suck a whole lot.

i don't see why grovyle would suck. it still learns leaf blade and frenzy plant, which are both physical. besides, with miracle seed attached to it along with it's overgrow ability, grass moves will still get a boost. his special attack isn't so bad anyway...

Overheat actually remains special, while Fire Punch, Fire Fang, Flame Wheel, Flare Drive and Sacred Fire are to be physical fire attacks. Of those, Arcanine gets Flame Wheel, which is weak, Fire Fang, which is also weak but can flinch the opponent AND burn them, and Flare Drive, which is very strong while 100% accurate, but does give recoil damage.

    Mewtwo LOVES this new system.
I don't think many Pokemon have been nerfed...not even Skarmory, for example.
4th gen Metagross using Thunderpunch on Skarm did less damage than 3rd gen.
Sceptile doesn't really get screwed, it does decent job as Leech Seeder.
It can now go physical completely, Leaf Blade with 90 base is nothing to sneeze at.

The idea of a Pogey getting the boot due to this new system is entirely one's gray matter.
My Alakazam doesn't have the punch TMs. It has Psychic, Recover, Reflect and Seismic Toss. And it's Rash. Helped me out when things went dire.
And besides, Sceptile's base Attack and Special Attack are the same, aren't they? If not, it can learn Swords Dance.

I've seen threads like this in the past and everyone says "OMFGZ ALAKAZAM SUXORZ CUZ OH NOEZ NO MORE PUNCHES" but there are some positive elements too. I'm 50-50 on this. Alakazam disappointed me though. There are good points and bad, but everyone seems to stick with the bad. No one here does, though. Thank you.

yes this is great. I mean like cool. when is it coming out here for us guys in US?

OMG that sucks butt. Sorry but yeah this sound preety nice.

It is great but bad aswell,And alakazam doesn't suck that bad.>0<The release date for America is doubted to early or mid 2007 but not in December because i think PBR will be out about that time.

i'm not fond of alakazam at all. low defenses is something that i just can't look past. hypno does a better job as a psychic pokemon than alakazam... at least what i've experenced. also, with reminscent headbutt being one of the new physical psychic moves, hypno will only get better.

Wow, I never realized how Leaf Blade's power was increased like that. As for base stats, Grovyle/Sceptiles SP.ATK is 20 points higher than its ATK.

Alakazam is a beast. Its special is like so high. def. may not be to good but Psy pokemon arent really phisicall pokemon

    Alakazam? Sucks? Not really.
Alakazam got Psychic, Energy Ball(new grass spatk), Focus Bomb(new fighting spatk), Shadow Ball(now special) and free type Hidden Power.
Could always use Shock Wave/Charge Beam if you think you need an electric attack, but it isn't very useful.

sure, he learns great moves that coincide with his special attack, but who's not to say whether his opponent has a strong special defense? maybe it's just me, but i think that well-rounded pokemon are a better choice over those that do well with either defenses or attacking.

Very happy about this. When I read that the Thread title, I wondered if the system depends in the move. I'm glad to see that I was wondering right.

This system is much more logical.
