i bought my first Pokemon yesterday, Black. have only played it an hour or so but have a few questions as ive never played any of the series before.

    1. im pretty close to the start, but am i meant to try and capture every pokemon i encounter OR just one of each kind?

    2. do you try and level up all your pokemon evenly or do you favour one and try and build it up mostly?

    3. any tips? like i said, never played a pokemon ever.. would be cool to know what im doing more and the goals of the game

4 oh last one, does it matter what order i play/buy the games? i read a lot of forums people saying get the real old ones first and work up to the newer ones but there was a good sale on the newer ds games yesterday so went ahead and got Black anyway

    Hey there!

    1. You'll just have to catch one Pokémon of each kind, to complete your Pokédex (thank god lol).

    2.
Well, it depends on what you like the best actually. There isn't really a given order, but I always try to level them up evenly. It's because when one Pokémon falls behind, it would be a bother to level it up all the way to the same lvl as the others, and that can build up very quickly if you don't pay attention to it.

    3.
Hmmm most things just come from experience really, so it's okay if you don't get some of the things in the beginning, they'll come as you make progress, and it's not hard to get a hang of it. I do suggest that you take a look at different types - which are resistant or weak to eachother, which types go well together and which don't, and so on. It's good to know e.g. prior to a battle, so you'll be prepared.

Just have as much fun as possible, I like to take my time when playing Pokémon games, it's much more fun than rushing to the end imo.

    1. Your supposedly main goal in the game is to try to get one of each, which in itself is a pretty great feat.

    2. This one is really your choice. You can train them all evenly so you can get balance within your team, or you can just train one Pokemon up to be really strong.

    3. I don't really have an answer to this one. There are a ton of fansites out there that you can use for tips.

    4. No, it doesn't matter what order you play the games in, normally I would recommend HeartGold as a game to start people of but Black version is pretty good too.

Also to add to the previous posts, sometimes shinies, (rare Pokemon that are differently coloured) appear. You should probably catch them since it's unlikely you'll ever see them again. :x

To clarify upon tips mentioned in the previous post, you'd probably get the most tips out of reading our Frequently Asked Questions, and then if there's more you need to know from there, follow the relevant links. :)

And in order to get the pokedex completed, you'll need the older games, but the way Black and White are set up, they allow people to start off their Pokemon journey on these games without needing the other games for it all to make sense. Though after playing Black, you should probably go in order of Red/Blue/Yellow > Gold/Silver/Crystal, because Kanto (a region in RBY) appears in GSC, and without prior knowledge you'd be confused. :x Then from there, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, since new Pokemon would've appeared by then, and finally Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, then you should be up to date with the new Pokemon. And the thing is, in Black and White, the older Pokemon only appear after the main part of the game is over so you can really play through fine without being too confused.

Black and White are really good games (in my opinion, and others too), so Black is a great choice to start out on personally.

If you have any further questions, please ask them in our Quick Questions sticky and people will be able to help you out!
