Hello. I used to play the Pokemon TCG when it first came out. I was in love with it. The new one seems so strange and complicated though. Can someone give me some advice?

    Agree

I second this request. I just asked a question on the previous thread . . . how do we determine what sets are unlimited v. limited.

I'm a new player, but I'll try and answer any specific questions that I can. BB, I addressed your question in another thread, but basically any booster/blister pack/starter that visibly states "diamond and pearl" on it is part of the current limited set. EX series are the second most recent series, and although your local comic/hobby supplier might stock them, they are NOT part of the limited/modified format.

The easiest way to familiarize yourself with the new rules is to buy a diamond/pearl starter set. They include a bunch of DP cards which are going to be the only thing you can use if you're interested in playing in the current format, and a helpful booklet that'll give you an idea of the basics of the new rules.

The above site has a simplified version of the text found in the booklet regarding changes in the D/P series.

...While they're called expert rules, every player should familiarize themselves with these.

As said, I'll do my best to answer any other questions you might have, and hope this helps!

One of the newest things that you should familierize yourself with is Pokemon Lv. X. They are unique forms of Pokemon that are used to upgrade you're normal Pokemon. Here are rules you should know about Pokemon Lv. X

    1. They cannot be played as Basic Pokemon. You must put a Lv. X card on top of another card in the manner of of evolving it. For example, Put Dialga Lv. X on top of Dialga to level it up.
    2. You cannot evolve Pokemon into Lv. X cards. For example, Grotle cannot be evolved into Torterra Lv. X. It must be evolved into Torterra and then leveled up into Torterra lv. X.
    3. Pokemon cannot be leveled up on your first turn or on any turn you just evolved the Pokemon you widh to level up.
    4. While in Lv. X form, Pokemon can use any attacks, Poke Bodies, and Poke Powers from they're previous form. For example, Palkia Lv. X can use attacks from the Palkia card and the Palkia Lv. X card.
    5. Pokemon Lv. X count toward the four-card limit of a Pokemon. For example, you cannot have four Torterra and one Torterra Lv. X.

    Hope I've been helpful.

Just one thing: That list misses perhaps the most important rule of Lv. X cards: they can only, unless stated otherwise, be placed on an active pokémon.
