Why is it people don't consider the Ranger games as well as Colloseum and XD part of the main seires? I never understood that. I mean I can see why Mystery Dungeon isn't count as part of the main series since you play as a Pokemon rather than a trainer of some sort, but why do these other ones get excluded?

A spin-off product is a product deriving elements of design, branding or function from an existing product, but which is itself a new distinct product.

Basically, they're part of the Pokemon franchise, but not close enough to the core gameplay to be considered official. In the Stadium series, you couldn't catch Pokemon. In Coliseum, running into wild Pokemon isn't as common and the main goal is not to become a Pokemon Master, but rather purifying shadow Pokemon. Ranger doesn't even have turn based battling.

In Colosseum, I'm pretty sure there are no wild Pokemon at all. >>'

There are in Gale of Darkness. At the Pokespots where you put Pokemon treats down to attract them. There's only 3 different Pokemon that can be caught at each spot and, really, catching wild Pokemon is pointless because they're underleveled and stopping what you're doing to catch them (I think) just interupts the game. =/

Anyway, they're not considered to be part of the main series because they're just spinoffs. They're not in the regular RPG style. Though Colosseum and XD are, in those games you can't catch wild Pokemon the same way you do in the handheld ones, you can't get gym badges, the game doesn't last as long, etc.

I wish the gamecube version will seriously be considered into the main series. In XD: Gale of Darkness, you were able to battle wild Pokémon, so that's a start.

There is also a pre-gym in both games. I'm not going to defend Rangers.

You have a point about the pre-gym.

However, that's not the kind of gym I was referring to. ;]

It would've been cool if you could earn badges in XD and/or Colosseum, though. The games would've lasted longer and they would've been more interesting.

But, the shadow Pokemon theme was a lot in intself.
