Question: Odds of Getting a Blog?

I was looking through some of the blogs here recently, and decided to make one of my own, since I'm going to college to learn game programming soon (January 3rd, so it'll be awhile before anything interesting would actually be posted,) which is like... the dream of just about every kid in the world, so I figure it'll be an interesting blog. I then went into my control panel to post my first entry, only to find out that only the cool kids can actually get a blog, unless you're rich enough to donate 10 bucks. (I certainly am not.)

Just to be clear, I'm not asking for one. I'm just wondering if it's even really feasible that someone could be given a blog, especially in my case, since I'm pretty sure none of the staff/admins have ever even heard my name. (Then again, I'm a fairly well known mapper, and I've been here for a couple years, but I don't know any of the staff, so I don't really expect them to know me.)

It's feasible. The admins can give a blog to a member who they think will make good use of it, but the chances of that are rather slim. I can't think of anyone who was actually given a blog through other means besides 5000 posts/donating/being on staff. If you have a spare ten bucks laying around, that would probably be your best option.

We have given 2 or 3 blog permissions to regular users, based on a) post quality, b) blog topic (we'll ask) , and c) to users who impress the staff in their day-to-day posting activity and topics.

It has happened, and can happen again, even for a person not really known to the staff. First have top quality posts, something users like reading even if tl:dr
ask a staffer, providing your reasons for wanting a blog, topic(s) you plan to cover, samples of your writing style.

The staff will look at it determine if what you have to offer is unique and of interest to the community.

Bottom line: don't give up, if you want a blog, you can have one without write a book of posts, or becoming a supporter.

They're not exactly slim; moderators can create events or competitions that involve blogging (with permission from the higher staff) and supporter privileges can be offered as prizes to some events too. (Nobody ever asks Rukario if they can do that.)

I've never seen a contest like that, and I imagine the odds of one popping up soon are fairly low.

'Course, you could still try to rack up the 5000 posts required.

Well, I'm definitely getting closer to 5000. I've posted close to 100 times in the last 2 days. (I just found the DCC, haha.) Still, I want the blog before I start college, since that will be the main focus of it, and there is no way I will ever get that many posts in that amount of time.

I'll try writing up my first entry, and pass it along to a staff member. Hopefully I can make it exciting enough, considering that school doesn't actually start for a few months.
Oh, and 666th post... maybe that's a sign that this blog isn't such a good idea after all. lol

You could donate, like $2-5 a week/month or so, then after a few reoccuring donations, I think I read that you automatically become tier 4, which I believe lets you create a blog. If you can't just try what everyone else said.
