    Spoiler:

    of volts, plasma, and water

So, hey. Electricmudkip here, just posting my story, which contains the Pokemon Black and White characters in a medieval setting.

Summary: White, the princess of the Volt Kingdom, must marry N, prince of the Plasma Kingdom to keep the two kingdoms from going to war. But what if she falls in love with a cook?

Warning: This story contains the pairing of Cress and White. If you don't like the pairing or just think it's plain weird, just remember you don't have to read it.

    1: emerging crisis

Once upon a time, where the Unova Region now stands, there were two kingdoms. One of them was the Volt Kingdom, ruled over by Queen Zekrom, and the other was the Plasma Kingdom, ruled over by King Reshiram.

Now, the rulers of these two kingdoms were actually Legendary Pokémon. When a decree came out from the Empress Arceus that Legendary Pokémon could not rule kingdoms of humans directly, the two had to pick a person to become the king or queen to operate through.

Zekrom chose Kuro Touko, the best knight in the kingdom. As the king, the first thing he tried to do was wage a war with the Plasma Kingdom so he could take their land. However, Zekrom told him this would not be the best interest for the kingdom.

"But why?" Kuro shouted, slamming his fist on the arm of his throne. "It will make our Volt Kingdom larger and more powerful!"

"True," Zekrom said, materializing from the shadows. "But Reshiram, another Legendary Pokémon, indirectly rules over the Plasma Kingdom, like I indirectly rule over the Volt Kingdom. A war between two legendary Pokémon and their forces would be ruinous. We must stay like this forever, lest we befall Empress Arceus' curse."

Kuro was not following her explanation. "What? Why would you two go to war?"

Zekrom stood directly in front of him and stared at him with her piercing red eyes. "Let me tell you a story. A long time ago, the two kingdoms were united. Reshiram and I ruled over this kingdom. But we could not agree on how to rule it. A huge war erupted, and our powers destroyed the entire region. Fearing even more destruction, Empress Arceus made a compromise. We could each have half of the land for our own kingdom, and could rule it however we wanted. And so we have been like this ever since…"

For a long time, there was nothing but the faint sound of Zekrom glowing blue. Finally, Kuro murmured, "I see." He looked up. "But I think the two kingdoms should be united. It would be better that way, don't you think?"

"Maybe…" Zekrom replied, before slipping into the shadows again.

Reshiram also picked a king, per the Empress' decree. He selected Ghetsis Harmonia, the leader of the Seven Sages, who in turn ruled over the kingdom's legion of knights, the aptly-named Team Plasma. Like Kuro, he thought unity for the Volt and Plasma kingdoms was best. However, his true motive was to rule over this one kingdom. This, he disclosed to the other six sages alone. Not even Reshiram knew of this plan. Ghetsis was using him, and he unsuspectingly played along.

"Reshiram, come here for a second," Ghetsis said one day. Reshiram materialized from a sunbeam originating from the slanted windows in the throne room.

"What is it, Ghetsis?" Reshiram asked. "Do you need any of my advice?"

"Somewhat," he replied. "As you know, I would like the kingdoms to be united. Do you know of any ways for my dream to become a reality?"

Reshiram's calm expression cracked a little and he began to look concerned. "I know of one way, but it isn't ideal. And I can't rule with Zekrom. We always find a way to disagree, it seems."

Ghetsis smiled smoothly. "But you won't have to rule with her. Remember Empress Arceus' decree? Either Kuro or I will be the king."

His words had the desired effect on Reshiram. He walked to the window, icy blue eyes fixed on the knights training outside. "As I was saying, I know of one way, but it isn't ideal."

When Reshiram's back turned, Ghetsis' calm smile turned into an evil leer.

Predictably, Kuro had a child, a successor for his kingdom. Her name was White Touko, and she was known for being extremely beautiful. However, she was also rather eccentric. She only had the perfect looks of a princess, it seemed. People, mostly the other nobles, criticized her fierce temper. But that wasn't her biggest flaw. Like her father, she also happened to be a knight. Even Zekrom disapproved of it.

"Honestly Kuro," she had said the day before White's knighting, sounding very much like a disapproving mother. "Do you really want to throw away her life like this? I know knighthood is one of the greatest honors to you, but you are a man. She is a girl, and a princess at that. And besides, do you really condone sending your only child off to war, where she can get killed in a heartbeat?"

"It will be okay, Zekrom," the king tried explaining. "We both think dying to protect this kingdom is the highest of honors."

Her red eyes bored into him, and he knew he had said the wrong thing. "So you're saying you don't care if your daughter dies?"

Kuro opened his mouth to protest, but Zekrom raised her hand, silencing him. "If you really want this for your daughter, go ahead. She is not my concern yet." Then, she walked into the shadow of the throne and disappeared.

    "White! Wait up!"

The princess heard someone call her name, and turned around. Her friend Bianca, the daughter of Duchess Elesa of Nimbasa, was walking towards her quickly.

White smiled. She had not seen her friend in years. She let the blonde embrace her, and they started down the hall together. "What are you doing here?"

"My mom's here with all the other dukes and duchesses of the Volt Kingdom for the meeting with your dad. So I used the time to see you! We have so much to catch up on!"

White's face grew solemn. "Um… About that… My father wants me present at the meeting."

Bianca was saddened for a while, but brightened up at another idea. "Let's go see Cheren, then. I bet he'll be happy to see me!"

White nodded mutely and headed towards the library on the second floor of the castle. Cheren was… a scholar. Nobody really knew what royal title he held; if he held one.

He had been found in Castelia twelve years ago, riding on a Blitzle. His clothes had been dirty and torn, and it was obvious that he had run away from somewhere. He had been allowed to live in the castle ever since, and had become a close friend of the princess.

Nobody really knew where he came from. However, there were rumors that he was the son of Clay, but that was preposterous. Clay was a duke from the Plasma Kingdom, and there was no way Cheren would have gotten in without being attacked if he did come from the Plasma Kingdom.

The brunette pushed the library door open, and the sound made Cheren look up. He was a year younger than both White and Bianca; being sixteen, but he was remarkably tall and wise for his age, which made people think he was the elder of the three. At the sight of Bianca, he smiled. "Hey, Bianca. Haven't seen you in years."

The two sat down at the table and started talking about when they were children and used to play in the castle. The more they talked, the sadder White became. She longed for the days when she had no duties and could play with her friends all day. But now she knew she would one day take the throne of a kingdom that disapproved of her. All because she had been knighted. She looked down, unable to smile anymore. Bianca touched her arm lightly.

"What's wrong? Aren't we talking about our happy memories?" She didn't know. She had been gone for several years. Cheren knew, but he didn't know that it made her sad.

"I'm a knight, Bianca," White said softly. "I like being a knight, but now most of the kingdom hates me. They think I'm unladylike and that's a bad thing for a princess."

"I'm sorry," her friend replied. The princess just nodded her head. "But hey, remember when we played knights and princesses? We were knights, and Cheren was the princess!"

White smiled, and Cheren looked mortified. "Don't remind me of that," he said. The two young women just laughed at his reaction, and Cheren tried to think of a way to get them to stop. Calm as ever, he said, "May I remind you that there are other people in this library? They're most likely studying or reading, so I think your laughter would be disruptive, and you two would be rebuked." He turned to the princess. "And I'm sure you don't want your reputation damaged even more, right?"

"Huh?" Bianca replied, green eyes wide. White stifled a laugh and Cheren smiled.

"Did you even follow what I said?"

"Uh…" the girl said, thinking. The other two smiled amusedly. "And remember when those suits of armor used to scare me?" Bianca asked, trying to change the subject.

"My apologies for interrupting, but White, you are needed in the meeting room. The meeting is beginning now."

They looked at the doorway. Zekrom herself was standing there, and the three bowed out of respect. "Of course," White said, rising from her seat and following the Legendary Pokémon.

They were all sitting at the long table. Kuro sat at the head, White was at his right, and Zekrom sat at his left. The dukes and duchesses took the other seats. They sat in the same places they would sit at the High Table during a feast. But it wasn't a feast. It was a meeting between the king and the rulers of his provinces.

"So," said Kuro. "We are gathered here to talk about the Plasma Kingdom. The recent activities of Team Plasma worry me, and I am afraid they may be trying to invade our Volt Kingdom. Elesa, your province is closest to the border. Has any suspicious activity been reported to you?"

"The border patrol said there are more knights stationed around the borders," the duchess replied. "But it may be just a precaution for an attack."

"But don't they know we can't attack?" the king replied. "Reshiram would tell them the reason, wouldn't he, Zekrom?"

Zekrom nodded. "I may not be able to get along with him, but it doesn't make him our immediate enemy. He just has good intentions for his kingdom. Intentions that are different from mine."

Suddenly, a courier burst into the room. "Your Majesty!" he called, waving to Kuro.

"What is it?" the king asked, irritated. "Is this urgent? We are in the middle of a meeting."

The courier nodded. "Of course it is, sir. The border patrol just spotted a squadron of Team Plasma knights heading towards the border, fully armed. And you'll never guess who's leading it!"

"I don't have time," Kuro replied impatiently. "So, who's leading it?"

    "The king, Ghetsis!"

A/N: So, I tried making a medieval setting and failed. XD I'm pretty sure my thing about knights is all wrong, too.

And I'm not too sure if this is obvious, but Zekrom and Reshiram are in human form.

Yeah, the dukes and duchesses are the gym leaders. Just to clarify, Cilan (his brother's aren't royal because they're long-lost siblings), Lenora, Burgh, and Elesa are part of Volt, and Clay, Skyla, Brycen, and Drayden are part of Plasma.

I'll make a map of Old Unova soon.
