2nd Gen Off the clock

So, I haven't played these games for a few years, so my gold and silver games have been sitting on the shelf for a while. My game was erased, but I wasn't too mad about that. I was going to restart anyway. What really has me annoyed is that every time I attempted to start a new game, the saves wouldn't stay. I think I finally got that sorted out by leaving my SP on all night with the game cartridge in. It still doesn't act as it should, though. The clock inside it is supposed to run concurrently with real time, but it still shows the time from when I turned it off. If anyone has any info that would be even remotely helpful, I would be most grateful. Thanks.
