I'm playing through the game right now, and my current party looks like this:

    Quilava L26
    Crobat L26
    Gyrados L27
    Nidorino L23
    [Empty]
    [Empty]

    I'm thinking of:
Replacing Crobat with Togekiss (Although togekiss seems pretty useless until later levels)
    Replacing Gyrados with Starmie
Replacing Nidorino with Tyranitar (I don't know when that become avaliable)
    Adding Jolteon/Espeon (which one?)
Adding Scizor (Gonna be a while before I catch one though..)

    Any suggestions/comments?

Moving this to the proper forum, where it will likely be locked.

I would say definitely replace Gyrados with Starmie, Gyrados has too little SP. Atk. to be that good in my opinion. I say Jolteon, because you don't have a counter to water without it, but Crobat seems ok to me. I'd also suggest replacing Nidorino with Tyranitar, although larvitar and Pupitar are incredibly difficult to raise, and you could just go with a Rhydon, who's not quite as good, but still got rock, and gets the STAB bonus from EQ, which Tyranitar doesn't.

Sorry about that. I realized this was in the wrong forum moments after I posted it; but I couldn't find the delete button.

Again, this is for my first playthrough, so I'm not looking for a godly party build. I can do that after I beat the game.

When considering natures, I settled for natures that were unhindering/slightly helpful because I did not have the patience to hunt down the exact nature I wanted

Quilava - Serious - Shell Bell (Will eqiup Choice Specs when it learns Flame Plume/Flamethrower)
    - Flame Wheel - Will be replaced by Flamethrower
    - Swift
    - Smokescreen - Will be replaced by Eruption
    - Leer - Will be replaced by Hidden Power
Gyrados - Naughty - Mystic Water
    - Bite - Will be replaced by Ice Fang
    - Dragon Rage - Will be replaced by Dragon Dance
    - Surf - Will be replaced by Waterfall
    - Whirlpool - Will be removed eventually (Undecided)
Crobat - Naughty - Sharp Beak - Appears to have high IV. Gains about +3 Hp/+3 Atk/+3 Spd every level.
    - Wing Attack - Will be replace by Aerial Ace eventually
    - Bite - Will be removed eventually (Fly/U-Turn/Cross Poison)
    - Astonish - Will be removed eventually (Fly/U-Turn/Cross Poison)
    - Confuse Ray
Nidorino - Serious - Exp Share - I dunno if it's worth continuing it. It's not very useful at the moment and I don't think it's worth using my earthquake TM on it considering Nidoking's very average stats. - Appears to have low IV.

The problem I have is..catching a staryu is going to be difficult when I only have a good rod (3% chance to find one), especially one with a good nature. I think Gyrados is a good pokemon, but he can't utilize Surf, being a terrible Sp. Attacker which means I'm going to need another HM slave for water. I do like the concept of Starmie though, although I dunno if it's a good idea to have so many speedy fragile pokemon (Jolteon, Starmie, Typhlosion)
The same goes for Scyther as finding the correct nature is going to be a major pain.
About Tyranitar - I'm mostly concerned about how I'm going to catch one. So far, I've heard that it's extremely rare in the safari zone, and even harder to catch. I'd like to have my party assembled before I reach an average party level of 35.

I might as well put out the proposed stats and movesets though:

    Starmie (Modest)
    - Surf
    - Ice Beam
    - Power Gem/Thunderbolt
    - Recover

    Tyranitar (Adamant)
    - Crunch
    - Earthquake
    - Stone Edge
    - Fire Punch

    Jolteon (Modest)
    - Thunderbolt
    - Shadow Ball
    - Hidden Power
    - Double Team

    Scizor (Jolly)
    - Bullet Punch
    - U-Turn/X-Scissor
    - Swords Dance
    - Night Slash

i would keep crobat he is a very fast and good pokemon if you trrain him right
also get umbreon since it looks like three of your guys are week to psycic (sp)

I personnaly use Crobat ingame, and think it's very useful. Gyarados would be a better choice in my opinion, since Starmie learns a lot of good moves, by TM only. =/ And Jolteon in not very interesting ingame. =/

I'm probably going to keep crobat, and switch him out for a togekiss when I start building a battle team.
I noticed that Jolteon doesn't get many choices in terms of attacks as well, but it still beats out ampharos and pikachu by a lot. I don't really like Electvire, and I can't obtain a magnezone in SS(?)

Regarding the psychic problem, after I ditch nidorino for tyranitar, it will only be one pokemon that is weak to psychic - Crobat.

The two things that are key to starmie are pretty much freebies in my opinion - Surf and Recover

Unfortunately, I'm using my Thunderbolt TM on Jolteon so Starmie won't be getting that until I grind Voltorb Flip for an hour or so.

Larvitar is incredibly hard to find in the Safari zone, I spent about an hour, and only caught 3, although i was going female only, so you should be able to catch a few more. I think Starmie is one of the best water types out there, with it's high Special Attack and Speed. Jolteon is quite good, but i kind've find him boring lol. He's got such insanely high speed and SP. Atk, he 1HKO's almost everything in my experience. Crobat is a good pokemon, and Tyranitar is by far the best rock in HG, plus it gets the STAB from Crunch.

So after one hour of fishing with a good rod and 13 staryus later, I finally got a Timid Staryu. The probem? It has terrible IV's according to the Seribii calculator. 2 Hp, 12 Atk, 26 Def, 7 SpA, 12 SpD, 12 Spd. It's sweeping pretty well though with a STAB Surf and can OHKO most trainer pokemon equal or slightly higher than it's level.

I don't even want to think about Tyranitar right now..

Trying in vain to collect a Thunderstone for my Jolteon so here's what my party looks like at the moment:

    L38 Typhlosion [Serious]
    - Lava Plume
    - Swift
    - Smokescreen
    - [Insert useless skill here]
    L40 Crobat [Naughty]
    - Wing Attack
    - Fly
    - Poison Fang [To be replaced with Cross Poison]
    - Roost
    L34 Staryu [Timid]
    - Surf
    - Swift
    - Recover
    - [Insert useless skill here]
    L5 Eevee [Don't remember]
    - Who cares?

    UPDATE:

Caught my first Scyther, with stellar IVs, but it has a bad nature (Modest) and the wrong ability (Swarm)
    sigh.

My Starmie also has the wrong ability (Illuminate) but I'm not going to bother with that for now. Natural Cure isn't amazingly useful
To sum it up, it has bad IVs, wrong ability, right nature. I might just pick up my Gyrados again and make a Starmie later.

Larvitar has successfully been eluding capture as I have yet to spot one.

Tomorrow's thursday, so I'm gonna try to catch another Scyther and and get my thunderstone from the pokeathalon for my Jolteon

As long as this is in game only, natures, IV's and abilities hardly matter. Honestly, I'd say just pick whichever pokemon you'll have the most fun with, and the one you just immediately want when you see it.

I easily caught 4 Adamant Larvitar. Just get an Abra with a synchronize/the nature you want at the game corner and soft-reset when you are out of coins.
