hi there. if i start 'new game' on pokemon pearl does my old game stay saved? am i right in thinking i can start a new game but can't save the new game and my old game remains and is not overwritten. thanks!

Like all Pokemon games you can only have one file per game card, so no if you start a new game your old game will be erased. ) :

If you start a new game and save it, the old game will be erased thus only one file per game card. Sorry for the confusion. ^^;;

Actually for Diamond and Pearl you cant start a new game unless you reset the card (Up + B + Select at the Menu screen)

nope Up + B + Select is all you need
Although you do it on the screen with Palkia/Dialga and not the menu screen and it gives you the option to erase everything

ya Angelic Diablo was correct it is:
up^ on the control pad
Select button
and the "B" Button
You have to press them simultaneously to delete your old save file.

Yup, that's how you start a new game/delete an old one in Diamond/Pearl. It's kind of a shame that you can't have more than one save file. I wanted to start over and had to delete my first game file because of it. I guess that prevents two people from sharing a game, but then again if they wanted to trade pokemon or something, they'd need two Nintendos anyhow, I guess.
I was kind of wanting to restart yet again, because my trainer name is written in Japanese and that might pose problems when trying to trade/battle with folks. But I've spent a decent amount of hours already and don't wanna delete all my work.
