Do you prefer how the mechanics worked before or after the physical/special split? Some argue that the metagame was more balanced when types were either physical or special. Powerful sweepers like Salamence had to use weaker moves like Hidden Power Flying, which meant that checking common threats was relatively easier. Though, the stronger moves that Gen 4-7 implemented played a big role in changing that, such as Outrage, Draco Meteor, Focus Blast, and Stone Edge. Back then you could always rely on, say, Blissey walling every Electric-type since all of them were special, sans random stuff like Drill Peck Zapdos.
