Planning to start entering tournaments

It's... kinda effective?

    Topic title.

I decided to look around to see if their are any tournaments near where I am. The last time I checked (About a year back) their were none but now that I've looked again, I've found a couple of places that have recently started weekly tournaments.

I'll probably start entering them either December or January though. I've never played competitive irl before so I'll until that time I'll be hitting DN pretty often to get more competitive experience (Against higher tier decks. These are small tournaments, so most are probably casuals and lower tier decks, but I'm sure that their will be a few high tiered decks, niche decks, or very skilled players.)

Anyway, going from casual to competitive/tournament play, what major differences can I expect?

Have fun with fighting Six Samurais and Gravekeepers

    Tour guides are pretty expensive.

Im tempted to buy a booster box. Hope I get one to resell. (I think the box is ~74. Should be able to sell the card for ~120+)

Its kinda sad though... That one card is worth more then my whole deck.

It is because it can fit in most decks and is broken. Oh look, first turn TG and I either have an extra monster on the field, normally if you go with GS agent. Or a 2500 beat stick! D:

True. I'm pretty sure that this card will be limited or even outright banned next list.

I'll be buying a booster box either way. But still, after seeing how expensive some cards in PHSW are I'm thinking of buying a box of that instead. Then again, probably should wait about a month to let the card prices stabilize after its release.

There would be almost no point limiting Tour Guide, so if anything, it'll become Semi-limited, but they won't ban it, because it makes Konami so much money.

And if you're planning on getting a box, I'd dare to recommend getting a GENF box, because of the synchros, Steelswarm Roach, Leviair Dragon etc. And I got banned from my local tournament for a petty reason, sent them an apology email, and am still banned 7 months later ¬.¬ Its frustrating...

    What you get banned for?

As for the box, I'll look into a few different ones. I'll proably go for the one that has the best chance of me making back the money I spent on it.

I got banned for "stealing" a friends binder (when it was actually a prank which backfired on me) who had been really annoying me and my friends recently. When he called me for it, I gave it back without any problems.

Also, may I ask, what is the point of buying a box just to sell what you get in it? I'd buy a box based on how much stuff I would actually use in it. In GENF there's a lot I would use, and that a lot of people generally use anyway. I think its a waste of money if you just buy to sell, since what's the point? I would buy a box which would be most useful to you, not which has the most sellable stuff.

Expect to face tougher competition! A local tournament is a good place to immerse yourself into the more competitive atmosphere of YGO. Be prepared to meet lots of different people and use your judgment to determine which duelists are worth hanging around with. Try not to get stuck with the ''wrong'' crowd so to speak as that can get you into trouble and can even lead to you getting banned from the local.

You'll probably encounter many opportunities to trade with other duelists too. Taking advantage of this is one of the best ways to expand your card collection. Make new friends, expand your trading network and you might soon be reeling in many good cards.

I run a very specific deck so odds are, only a few cards per booster set will be useful to me. (But most likely not even added to the deck) The majority of the cards would either be for trade or sell, and most times I'd lean towards money.

I probably should try expanding into other types of decks but.. I specialized early on. At the time, good idea. Not so much now.

I'm looking forward to testing my deck irl against other competitive decks.

if you're looking for testing your deck out, i would recommend skype or webcam dueling. it gives you a chance to look at what people are playing at the moment. I found out the hard way and went in blindfolded practically at my locals, but for a first timer i didn't do so badly i would guess... i went 3-3 but obviously i wouldn't make it into top 8.

HONESTLY though, its an awesome opportunity to make new friends who are interested in the same hobby as you are and it helps set up trades for the cards you might want.

    I'd like to try skype/webcam duels but I'm on dial-up. >_<

Still, 3-3 for first time is pretty good.
