For quite awhile, I've had thoughts that certain Pokémon were designed in a way so as to resemble cartoon animals from other media franchises, particularly western animation.
What Pokémon do you think are designed to resemble or reference cartoon characters from other franchises, or otherwise remind you of such properties?
When I first saw Pancham, it struck me as somewhat resembling Andy Panda from the Walter Lantz Studio, which produced theatrical animated shorts during Hollywood's Golden Age. Lantz released his cartoons through Universal through most of his company's time in business, and was best known for Woody Woodpecker and Chilly Willy.
More recently, Popplio reminded me instantly of Salty the Seal from Walt Disney's classic Mickey Mouse theatrical shorts. Salty appeared in a few cartoons during the 1930s and 1940s, his most notable appearance being "Mickey and the Seal" (1948).
