Simply because of one thing: the Pokeball.

In the anime, at least, pokeballs have the ability to expand and retract in size, so that the pokeball can fit in your pocket, and hence so would the pokemon inside it.

Before anything, would you please learn how to spell Pokemon?
Anyways, they were called Pocket Monsters, I think, because they are monsters that you play with on gameboys which can fit in your pockets.

Pokemon aren't called pocket monsters, Pocket Monsters are called pokemon........

I mean in Japan they originally called it Pocket Monsters, but then at some point I guess they shortened it to PokeMon. It's just like how Digimon are called Digital Monsters.......

    I guess ^_^

    Hi Sin,
It is a very good piece of information I didn't know that reason behind the name Pokemon which is originally derived from Pocket Monster like Digimon derived from Digital Monster. I am glad to know about such a thing. Thanks for sharing such useful information here. Keep up the good work going and stay connected.

I always thought it was because a pokemon goes inside and pokeball which is able to fit in your pocket or around your waist. I never thought of it being because pokemon are in a gameboy that can fit into your pocket, but perhaps I'm wrong. I guess in actuality it could be either way.
