Episode Four: Pewter City! Normal Rank Begin!!

The dark room was lined with shifting shadows, a symphony of synchronized malice. In the middle of the room stood a swiveling chair, facing a giant TV screen.

A man sat in the chair, red suit and slicked back hair only visible, while the shadows hid the rest of his face. A lazy, well fed Persian lay at his feet, purring contentedly….sinister in its limber movement and glowing eyes.

The man was Giovanni, head leader of Team Rocket, a money hungry, power hungry organization that used pokemon to achieve their goals. Evil wasn't what they called themselves.

Adamant and eccentric might have been more adequate adjectives for their public profile.

But that was beside the point.

Giovanni looked up at the screen slowly, and it fizzed with static. A few seconds later, the image of his top Executives, Jane and Luther, appeared. The backdrop of lush trees dictated they were in some kind of forest….

"Hello you two. Report?" The boss's voice was low.

"Yes Sir." Jane saluted. "We failed to intercept the three children. Lance Blackthorn of the Elite Four tangled our plans and we had to retreat. However, we tracked them through to Viridian Forest."

"Highly disappointing. This might even tarnish your impeccable records…"

"Indeed sir." Luther's silky voice was respectful. "However, while in this forest we observed something quite interesting…"

"It seems Experiment 107 has been after the kids as well." Jane smirked a little, then crushed it as she saw her boss sit up in his chair, clearly surprised by this information.

"……………….." Giovanni was silent. He sunk back in his chair and the Persian stood up, laying its head in its master's lap, meowing dully.

The man stroked its creamy head slowly, and then nodded. "Alright you two, it is decided. While I have mourned the loss of 107, we must recapture him. Doubting the things he could do on his own is folly."

Luther and Jane both nodded, knowing fully well what the experiment was capable of…

"If it has taken interest in the children, then what Scientist Bostovich wrote is confirmed. Watch them. I am positive Hypno is more than capable of tracking them psychically….Make sure you're presence isn't known to them."

"Yes." The two team rocket executives nodded again.

"Our next operation will be in Lavender Town. Our savings are running low and Cubone skulls are a ludicrous form of wealth…Meet Tsu'uka there, she'll give you more information on my next orders. You are dismissed."

Giovanni pushed a button on his chair. The screen went blank. He began to chuckle chillingly, then looked down at Persian and grinned.

"Perhaps he is after the same thing I am…."

"Puuuuuuuuur…sian…."

Pewter City, Town of the Gray Stone, was known for two things.

One, being the gym.

And two, the Normal Rank Contest Hall.

"Hey professor!" Tai's bright smile lit up the phone booth. Nina, Edwin, and Tai had gotten up that morning, only to forget about changing out of their pajamas and go straight to ask Professor Oak something that had been hanging over their thoughts. They lived like hobos the night before, and raced towards the Pokemon Center first thing in the morning.

Professor Oak smiled warmly at the image of Pallets three newest trainers. "Hello Tai. Edwin, Nina." He nodded at the the trainers. "How has your journey been?"

"Excellent." Charco nodded.

Tai quickly took over and brought Oak up to speed, from everything to catching his Pidgey and seeing the psychic thing to meeting Team Rocket and Lance.

"You met Lance? Wonderful! He's a very powerful trainer you know. I AM sorry to hear you ran into Team Rocket though…" The professor sighed.

"That's not all gramps." Tai said after a breath of air, tapping the screen to get the professor's attention. "Something, a pokemon I think, the same one I saw, attacked us on our way here, in Viridian Forest."

"What?!"

<It was huge, stood at least six feet, and if it wasn't for Tai, we'd all be fried, well done and crisp.> Charco exaggerated. Just a little.

"Give me a description." The professor demanded, taking out a clipboard.

Tai did so, with the help of his friends. "Long tail, three fingers, huge legs. It spoke telekinetically and hard armor…on its head like a helmet."

"….interesting….And you said your pokedex didn't read it Tai?"

"No. It said, Pokemon Unknown."

"….oh dear. I'm afraid I can't tell you what it was you three. Repeat to me what it said to you, with the exact words."

Edwin, having an impeccable memory, did so.

"I've never heard of a pokemon doing that… Incredible. It's no ordinary pokemon and must have the intelligence of about three Alakazams….But I must warn you, this plan it has doesn't sound good. Be on the alert, it might still be around, or decide to attack you again…."

"Don't sweat it, we'll be careful."

Professor Oak nodded."In the meantime, I'll contact other professor friends of mine overseas and see if they know anything about this pokemon. Professor Birch and Elm might know something…"

"Much obliged gramps, but I have a question!" Tai smeared his face onto the screen as to stop the professor from leaving the line.

"Yes?"

"What's the deal with these contests? I've never heard of them being in Kanto." Tai pondered.

"Ah yes, the Kanto Contests. They just began holding them recently, my grandaughter has been taking part in them!" Prof. Oak swiveled out of his chair and was quickly replaced by a young woman with light brown hair and a lab coat.

"Hello! I'm Daisy Oak!" Tai grinned at the girl, she was very pretty. Tai began asking her questions about Kanto contests, the girl eagerly giving answers. This went on for about five minutes straight, the pokemon beginning to get bored.

"You crush berries to make Berry Powder and mix it in with your Pokemon's Food. That raises their condition, that's all you need to know."

"Okay thanks. Bye bye Professor!" Tai waved as the Professor and Daisy finished answering his questions.

"Bye kids, and please please PLEASE be careful, I can't stress that word enough. With Team Rocket and that pokemon around I have half the right to call you back home."

"No! Professor, we'll be fine!" Tai protested, not wanting to go back.

The professor was silent for a few moments, and then sighed. "Alright, if you insist. I demand one thing though."

"What gramps?"

"That you train as hard as you can after you beat Brock and evolve your three starters BEFORE you enter Mt. Moon."

"What?!"

"It's for your own safety. I'll feel better knowing at least you can defend yourselves somewhat."

"But what if Charco doesn't want to evolve?! I can't just force him!"

"I've raised those three from eggs, Tai. I taught them to protect their trainers at all costs. Despite their attitudes, they will do this, out of love for both you and me."

Charco gave the professor a thumbs up, as the link closed abruptly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tai, of course, had already memorized the information, and proceeded to drag his two friends to the Contest Hall a couple of minutes later. They stopped a couple of yards away from the large stadium next to a sign.
It read, in big, bright, orange letters:
HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL IS HERE IN PEWTER! ENJOY A POKEMON CONTEST AMONG GHOSTS AND GHOLIES! ONLY THREE DOLLARS AT THE ENTRANCE FOR SPECTATORS!
Please return all pokemon and keep them inside their pokeballs at all times to prevent further chaos. Thank you.
- The Management.
It was decorated with little bats and pumpkins.
The three were eager, or ate least Tai was, the pokemon eager as well. "The owner of the museum apparently loves Halloween, and decorates the place for it every year. Contestants have to dress up for these special contests."
<Which is tonight.> Added Charco with a smug grin.
"Yes."
"Which means we need to do some shopping for a costume." The boy smirked, "Besides, the winner gets a Moon Stone after all…"
A moon stone was very valuable, so the trio decided to go back to the Pokemon Center where Nurse Joy helped them with their constumes. After three strenuous hours, the trainer's costume was finally done.
The now all stood outside of the towering stadium, its gaping mouth taunting them to enter. It was large in dimension, its white paint reflecting the bright sunlight, a large pink pokeball symbol wrapped in a ribbon was placed at the top of the stadium.
Tai stood tall outside of the stadium, eager to see what contest's were like. He had white face paint on, white gloves, and a large ruffled collar around his neck. A puffy jumpsuit of black and red with outrageously large shoes and bells on the toes was the main body of the costume. Several triangles were painted over one eye and a teardrop under the other. His regular red hat was replaced with a red jester hat, complete with bells and black trim.
"Pewter City Normal Rank Contest will begin in one hour!" The voice of the announcer boomed through the megaphone atop of the dome.
"Hey professor!" Nina grumbled and swiped at her eyes groggily, she yawned and waved slightly at the professor, her hair was a mess and she was still in her pajama's. Tai practically dragged them out of bed this morning and she wanted to get a few more winks of sleep in before starting the day "How can he be so cheerful in the morning" Nina wondered biting back another yawn as she listened to Tai relay their adventure's thus far to the professor.
"You met Lance? Wonderful! He's a very powerful trainer you know. I AM sorry to hear you ran into Team Rocket though…"
The professor sighed. "That's not all gramps. Something, a Pokémon I think, the same one I saw, attacked us on our way here in Viridian Forest."
"What?!"
Charco had said something and Gale snorted "Nu-Uh, he was just as scared as the rest of us!" the two then began to argue about what had happened, but Nina ignored that. "Give me a description."The professor demanded, taking out a clipboard. It was then they began making gestures and telling the professor about the Pokémon "Long tail, three fingers, huge legs. It spoke telekinetically and hard armor…on its head like a helmet."
"….interesting….And you said your Pokédex didn't read it Tai?"
"Ah yes, the Kanto Contests. They just began holding them recently, my granddaughter has been taking part in them!"
Prof. Oak swiveled out of his chair and was quickly replaced by a young woman with light brown hair and a lab coat.
"Hello! I'm Daisy Oak!"
Tai grinned at the girl, eager for information, Tai quickly began bombarding her for questions and answers about the contests. This went on for about five minutes straight. Gale and Charco had stopped bickering and began to wonder what was taking so long.
"You crush berries to make Berry Powder and mix it in with your Pokémon's Food. That raises their condition, that's all you need to know."
"I've raised those three from eggs, Tai. I taught them to protect their trainers at all costs. Despite their attitudes, they will do this, out of love for both you and me."
The link then closed.
After they chatted with professor Oak, Tai had proceeded to drag her and Edwin to the Contest Hall a couple of minutes later. They stopped a couple of yards away from the large stadium next to a sign.
It was decorated with little bats and pumpkins.
Tai seemed to be the most earger out of them as was Charco, but Gale was a bit heasitant as she studied the hall. "The owner of the museum apparently loves Halloween, and decorates the place for it every year. Contestants have to dress up for these special contests."
Charco had spoken up and Tai responded "Which means we need to do some shopping for a costume." The boy smirked, "Besides, the winner gets a Moon Stone after all…"
"A Moon Stone. . ." Nina had head a moon stone was very valuable, and they were great tools for evolutions, commonly a Clefairy or Jigglypuff. The trio decided to go back to the Pokémon Center where Nurse Joy helped them with their costumes'. After three strenuous hours, each of their costumes were finally done.
They all stood outside of the towering stadium, its gaping mouth taunting them to enter. It was large in dimension, its white paint reflecting the bright sunlight, a large pink Pokéball symbol wrapped in a ribbon was placed at the top of the stadium.
Tai stood tall outside of the stadium, eager to see what contest's were like. He had white face paint on, white gloves, and a large ruffled collar around his neck. A puffy jumpsuit of black and red with outrageously large shoes and bells on the toes was the main body of the costume. Several triangles were painted over one eye and a teardrop under the other. His regular red hat was replaced with a red jester hat, complete with bells and black trim.
Nina glanced at Tai and Edwin's costumes briefly before looking at her own and fidgeting with her own, since Halloween was the theme; she decided to go as a witch. Not really a fan of Make-Up, Nina had Nurse Joy help her out with this, since she was bad at it and the older woman did a nice job, adding the right amount of eyeliner and blush to her face and after it was done Nina commented her face felt funny and Nurse Joy just giggled in response.
Nina was wearing a large pointed crooked tip black witch's hat, just above the brim was a chilling looked skull with red eyes, that matched the choker that was around her neck and the black fingerless gloves with a skull ring on her index finger. Nina's outfit consisted of a off the shoulder black short sleeved dress that came to her thighs and had ruffled sleeves and white lace going around the hems, it was sort of like a maid's outfit, though a bit more gothic. Her socks were striped, black and white and covered her knees and cute black shoes, with heels that clicked when she walked, finished her outfit, for accessories she added some fake Meowth ears, fangs, a tail and a witch's broom.
She was going as a half cat, half witch girl.
"Pewter City Normal Rank Contest will begin in one hour!" The voice of the announcer boomed through the megaphone atop of the dome.
"Ohh I don't know if I can do this guys. . . I'm not good with crowds, especially big crowds" she stammered and gulped tugging at the hem of her dress nervously "I. . .I'm not even good when it comes to people! It's a miracle I'm even getting along with you two!" Nina bit her lip nervously "M-Maybe I should just watch. . ."
"Hey professor!" Tai's bright smile lit up the phone booth. Wait, what phone booth? Edwin thought. The phone booth - or rather the booth-like thing that surrounded the phone on three sides was in the Pokemon Centre. He woke up that morning, painfully aware of the chill of the condensation formed as a result of the lack of heat provided by the sun. It was wunderbar, Edwin thought, to be near civilization again. The Professor and Tai were chatting on the videophone about... something related to Team Rocket. And that psychic Pokemon. As usual, Tai's talkativeness dominated the situation, so Edwin didn't bother to talk much at all, but merely nodded every once in a while to punctuate Tai's sentences. First thing after this, he thought as he fought back a yawn, I'm getting a cup of tea.
"What?!"
That was Professor Oak, exclaiming something about the armored Pokemon that they saw.
"….oh dear. I'm afraid I can't tell you what it was you three. Repeat to me what it said to you, with the exact words."
Looking around at his companions, Edwin began to repeat the words of their telepathic conversation, word for word. After all, yesterday was still a fairly sharp memory. Having done his part, he flowed back into tiredness again as the conversation went on. Eventually, they reached the subject of contests. A new face entered the camera of the videophone.
"Hello! I'm Daisy Oak!"
It was the granddaughter of Professor Oak, a famed Pokemon breeder and caretaker. Edwin noted her fair appearance.
"You crush berries to make Berry Powder and mix it in with your Pokemon's Food. That raises their condition, that's all you need to know."
A few questions were thrown back and forth, answers being wrought. The conversation was almost at an end. Edwin had time to catch the last few words.
"That you train as hard as you can after you beat Brock and evolve your three starters BEFORE you enter Mt. Moon."
Evolution. He glanced down at Bulbasaur, his fairly new companion. "Evolution.... hmm. Let's try our best, Bulbasaur." Fushigidane nodded in apprehension.
-Indeed. -
Tai, as energetic as ever, dragged a protesting Edwin and Nina over to the contest hall, but not before Edwin had insisted on grabbing a cup of green tea (no additives, he had said). The first thing that attracted his attention as he sipped his tea from a disposable cup was a sign.
It read, in big, bright, orange letters:
HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL IS HERE IN PEWTER! ENJOY A POKEMON CONTEST AMONG GHOSTS AND GHOLIES! ONLY THREE DOLLARS AT THE ENTRANCE FOR SPECTATORS!
And below that was a note.
Please return all pokemon and keep them inside their pokeballs at all times to prevent further chaos. Thank you.
- The Management.
It was decorated with little bats and pumpkins.
"The owner of the museum apparently loves Halloween, and decorates the place for it every year. Contestants have to dress up for these special contests. Which means we need to do some shopping for a costume." Tai smirked, "Besides, the winner gets a Moon Stone after all…"
"A moon stone… a fitting item for a victor." Edwin smiled in apprehension. "And a valuable gift as well. I think… that this chance to perform is too good to pass up."
It was still morning. Tai and Nina headed back to the Pokemon centre, and Edwin followed after them to pick up some breakfast at the cafeteria, namely several cups of green tea (no additives, of course, as insisted by Edwin the prolific tea-drinker), scrambled eggs, mushrooms, and black pudding. After breakfast, Tai and Nina remained at the Pokemon centre to prepare their costumes, but Edwin had other plans in the city after their encounters in the forest. He picked up his violin case from his room in the Pokemon centre, freshly moved into just this morning, and left for the front lobby of the building.
First, he left his Weedle, Kakuna, and Metapod at the PC, having no ability to raise that many Pokemon successfully simultaneously. Then, he stopped by at the PokeMart to buy another five Pokeballs to replenish what he had used already – costing him a neat 1500 Pokedollars in the process, a full 35% of his liquid wealth. Perhaps he ought to consider sending home a letter for more funds, Edwin mused, then discarded the idea. He began to wander Pewter City's streets somewhat randomly in search for trinkets, admiring the elaborate storefronts.
The day passed uneventfully, Edwin opting to order a slice of Dutch cake for lunch. He was never one for wholesome, healthy foods, after all, and cake was decently good for his purposes. He continued to search for the second half of his proposed costume after lunch, attempting to locate a boutonniere.
It was one o'clock in the afternoon when he finally entered the glass door of a florist's shop, carrying flowers and crystal trinkets. The owner had a fairly friendly face, Edwin noted. He bowed out of politeness to the old man with a graying beard and a thin, cheery visage.
"Do you happen to have… ah, a rose, ojii-san?"
"Why, absolutely. Over here." The old man grinned, and then pointed to a corner of the shop where roses were displayed. "I think it's pretty self-explanatory. Take your time, young man."
"Ah, thank you, if you don't mind… Bulbasaur!" A beam released the green plant-like creature from its Pokeball.
"Bulbasaur, help me choose a rose, please. I think you're decently qualified." Edwin smirked at his little friend, who smiled deviously.
-Then… I think you should choose that white one, over by the corner. It'll look nice with your costume, which is probably dark-coloured. If your costume is white, then get a yellow rose. –
Edwin examined the white roses carefully. Not overly special, but not too bad, either. Raising an eyebrow, he peered more closely at the roses. They would make an interesting gift, but… Finding nothing out of the ordinary, he queried the storekeeper.
"Do you have… any special white roses?"
The old storekeeper chuckled, bringing out a small case covered with white silk out from behind the counter. "A special rose, you say?" He opened the case.
A crystal flower gleamed in the afternoon sunlight, amplifying it by tenfold to create a sparkling brilliance. "I'd be willing to make you one of these, young man, if you would give me something worth my time as the material. A moon stone, say." The old man smiled happily, reminiscing of old times. "The moon stone is a precious evolutionary stone, but it's also a beautiful carving material. Its colour is dark as the night sky, yet it sparkles with unmatched brilliance."
Edwin thanked the old man, paid for a single white rose, then strode out of the shop, mind whirling. "A moon stone… tonight's prize."
-This is certainly newfound initiative. – Bulbasaur remarked. –That was certainly impressive, to say the least. You might not win the contest, though, so don't get your hopes up. –
"Of course I'll win the contest! I have to get my hands on that moon stone. We're only slightly behind their progress, so it's likely I'll meet her again soon…"
-Wait, wait. Who's her? – Bulbasaur said questioningly.
"Ummm… no one in particular?" Edwin said nervously.
-Very funny, Edwin. I know who it is. -
He changed into his performing attire – midnight blue swallowtail coat with matching trousers. His white rose, a fresh boutonniere, was in place. He attempted to curl his hair slightly, failed, failed again, and then finally ignored it. He removed his violin from his case, took a deep breath, and went to meet Tai and Nina outside the contest hall.
They now all stood outside of the towering stadium, its gaping mouth taunting them to enter. It was immense, white paint reflecting the bright sunlight; a large pink Pokeball icon wrapped in a ribbon was placed at the top of the stadium. Tai had on a ridiculous-looking jester's outfit, while Nina was wearing… a catgirl witch outfit. "Very interesting outfit, Tai." Edwin smiled. "Good luck." Nina wasn't going to participate, apparently.
"Pewter City Normal Rank Contest will begin in one hour!" The voice of the announcer boomed through the megaphone atop of the dome.
"Ohh I don't know if I can do this guys. . . I'm not good with crowds, especially big crowds" she stammered and gulped tugging at the hem of her dress nervously "I. . .I'm not even good when it comes to people! It's a miracle I'm even getting along with you two!" Nina bit her lip nervously "M-Maybe I should just watch. . ."
-Edwin? You might want to do something about this. - Bulbasaur whispered. -She is part of your group, after all. -
"Nina." Edwin's voice was calm. "This situation has happened multiple times in my career as a performer. Seize the day, and you'll enjoy the moment; otherwise you cannot hope to overcome your fears of people. I fade out sometimes, and I become nervous, but doing so with a crowd you barely know is unnecessary." He smiled. "Even if you do embarass yourself, no one will likely notice if you do something wrong. They usually assume it's part of your performance."
The trio stood outside of the contest stadium, each in their costumes after Edwin had rejoined them. Tai noticed Nina's eyes darting around nervously, then opening her mouth to speak.
"Ohh I don't know if I can do this guys. . . I'm not good with crowds, especially big crowds" The girl stammered and as she tugged on her dress, "I. . .I'm not even good when it comes to people! It's a miracle I'm even getting along with you two!" Tai noted the nervous tone she had, "M-Maybe I should just watch. . ."
The boy sighed, "Oh no you don't. This is our first contest, and we're doing it together." The man smiled warmly at the girl,
"'Sides, what's the worst that can happen?" The boy gave a thumbs up at the girl.
"Nina." Tai turned to see Edwin looking over at Nina. "This situation has happened multiple times in my career as a performer. Seize the day, and you'll enjoy the moment; otherwise you cannot hope to overcome your fears of people. I fade out sometimes, and I become nervous, but doing so with a crowd you barely know is unnecessary." Edwin smiled, Tai was amazed at the boy's intellect. "Even if you do embarrass yourself, no one will likely notice if you do something wrong. They usually assume it's part of your performance."
Tai nodded jovially, "So come on. We'll do this together." The boy grinned as he led the trio inside.
The large main lobby opened up to the tree trainers, blue marble floors and pink painted walls created the foundation of the lobby. Halloween decorations were scattered all through the lobby, pictures of ghosts hanging on the wall and strings full of bats hung across the walls. Pumpkins were placed at each and every corner, and desk. Many people dotted the lobby, some of them looking at the portraits of past winners while others just sat around on the many leather couches and seats.
"Wow. This place is big, imagine the rest of the place." Tai was in awe as he walked down the lobby, the boy walked up to the nice lavender front desk and searched around for anyone of service. A merry woman popped up, with nice pink hair falling down her back and a slim white dress on. She reminded the trainers of Nurse Joy,
"Hello. How may I help you?" The woman smiled,
"We're here to Register for our Kanto Contest Passes!!" Tai eagerly yelled out, the nurse smiled warmly and motioned at a small mechanism in front of her.
"If you could please swipe your Trainer Card through this machine, your information will be recorded into our database."
"Oh, well you see. We don't have Trainer Cards, we have these instead." Tai held up his red pokedex, the lady was pleasantly shocked.
"Oh, okay then. We've dealt with these a couple of times. Please hand me your Pokedexs." The nurse grabbed the three trainer's machines and fumbled through their settings. After a few moments of waiting, three plastic cards were spat out of a small machine. The cards were red with a yellow ribbon, a small box with their ID pictures were on the front of their cards.
Tai eagerly grabbed his contest pass and looked at the information on the back, he was a Normal Rank Coordinator.
"Now, I am happy to present each of you a Ribbon Case and a Powder Jars. I'm sure you know what each of these are for." The woman asked. The trainers nodded as they were handed small red, green, and blue cases with a ribbon image on it. They each took five stout jars, they were a dull yellow and transparent. The woman waved as the trainer went to go sit on a blue couch with a table in front of them.
"Okay, the contest starts in an hour. In the mean time, we can prepare by making Berry Powder." Tai grinned as he examined the machine placed in the center of the table in front of them. It was a large cylinder machine with a transparent bottle taking up most of the machine, the machine itself was tan. Which held the transparent bottle in place, the machine had a storage compartment at the top with an orange top. The top had five buttons at the top, and a lid in the center of the top where berries were put in.
"Well Daisy said since it was our first contest, we should make powder out of all five berry types. Lucky for us, we each have two of each flavor. So we should each put in one of our berries for each flavor." Tai said as he opened the small lid of the machine, and tossed a single Cheri berry in.
Tai motioned for the other two to do the same, and they did. The three Cheri Berries were now placed inside of the machine,
"And now...we each SMASH A BUTTON!" Tai said eagerly as he began smashing one of the five buttons on the machine, the boy concentrated on his button alone as he smashed it. The other two trainers were take by surprise and soon joined in smashing a button, Tai wondered if these two were actually his friends. Or if they just pretended to be his friends.
The machine whizzed as sparkling red powder dropped down into the transparent container, the buttons finally began blinking a bright yellow. This signified that the process was done, the orange top slid off to reveal the bright red powder which filled up half of the large container.
"Haha. Good job guys." Tai smiled towards the other trainers, surprisingly calm. He emptied the jar into each of the trainer's jars equally. They repeated this process four more times in order to get each flavor, Tai wiped his forehead and held up his right index finger,
"Aww. Look at my poor finger." Tai whined, his finger seemingly huge and red. Charco chuckled from inside his pokeball,
"Oh yeah, come out and eat your food." Tai grinned as he released his three pokemon in a cloud of smoke. Tai placed three bowls of food and poured each of the five flavored powders into each of the three bowls, he looked over his shoulder to see Edwin and Nina doing the same.
Charco, Gee, and Sprink happily dashed over to their bowls and began munching on the pellets. Tai grinned at his three pokemon, he kneeled down and looked down at them.
"Hey. You guys are my friends, right?" Sprink continued to munch on his pellet and nodded, Charco and Gee grinning in agreement. Tai smiled,
"Good." He sat down and waited for the hour to pass...
The large main lobby opened up to the three trainers, the dome of the contest hall high above them. It was decorated with motifs of Halloween and the local Kanto ghost Pokemon, Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar, as well as jack-o-lanterns carved from pumpkins and... turnips? Edwin grinned. Turnips. Framed sketches of past contest-winning Pokemon littered the walls, neatly spaced out on the pink walls.
"Wow. This place is big, imagine the rest of the place." Tai walked up to a desk and was confronting a pink-haired woman very much like Nurse Joy, Edwin noted. She was probably managing these contests. He thought for a while, then began to walk towards Tai.
"Hello. How may I help you?" The woman smiled towards them.
"We're here to Register for our Kanto Contest Passes!!" Tai eagerly yelled out to the woman. Edwin did nothing other than keep his smile in place.
"If you could please swipe your Trainer Card through this machine, your information will be recorded into our database." Wait, wait. Trainer Cards? What Trainer Cards? We only have our Pokedexes, right?
"Oh, well you see. We don't have Trainer Cards, we have these instead." Tai held up his red Pokedex for further examination.
"Oh, okay then. We've dealt with these a couple of times. Please hand me your Pokedexes." The nurse grabbed the three trainer's machines and fumbled through their settings. After a few moments of waiting, three plastic cards were spat out of a small machine. The cards were red with a yellow ribbon, a small box with their ID pictures were on the front of their cards.
Edwin picked the square piece of plastic up carefully between his index finger and his thumb. He blew on it carefully to remove any dust attracted by static electricity, then examined the pass itself. Apparently, he was issued a Normal Rank contest pass.
"Now, I am happy to present each of you a Ribbon Case and a Powder Jar. I'm sure you know what each of these are for." The woman said, matter-of-factly. The trainers nodded as they were handed small red, green, and blue cases with a ribbon image on it. To match our Pokedexes, Edwin noticed. It seems that these people care a lot about themes and fashion sense.
"Okay, the contest starts in an hour. In the mean time, we can prepare by making Berry Powder." Tai was smiling happily, Edwin saw. They approached the Berry Blender.
"Well Daisy said since it was our first contest, we should make powder out of all five berry types. Lucky for us, we each have two of each flavor. So we should each put in one of our berries for each flavor." Tai said as he opened the small lid of the machine, and tossed a single Cheri berry in.
"Each flavor?" This was no specialization at all, Edwin thought. Then he sighed. That was probably true, but he had to deal with it. I think I'll prepare Pokemon for the categories separately. The Pokedex will probably help with that. He dropped a Cheri berry into the machine as well.
"And now...we each SMASH A BUTTON!" Tai was the first to begin by furiously mashing his button. Button-mashing? Edwin pressed the button down tentatively. He used his index finger to test it, then he switched to his thumb. Growing dissatisfied with that as well, he used the base of his palm instead.
The Berry Crusher was doing its job; the berries were being pounded into sparkling red powder, which was deposited into the clear jar in the middle of the device. The container, when the machine finished, was shared among them equally and deposited into their own Powder Jars. The process was repeated for all four other flavors before they stopped in order to utilize their winnings.
"Aww. Look at my poor finger." Tai whined, his finger seemingly huge and red.
"Tai... you might want to try to use something else other than just one finger next time... the button requires a considerable amount of strength that's hard-pressed for just one digit to handle when added together." Edwin looked at Tai's finger questioningly, and began to berate him. "Otherwise, wear a glove." He smiled.
As the other two trainers retreated to feed their Pokemon Berry Powder, Edwin did the same. Before he did so, however, he checked his Pokedex.
BULBASAUR LV 13
HP |--------|
POISONPOWDER - SMART
SLEEP POWDER - SMART
LEECH SEED - SMART
VINE WHIP - TOUGH
So Bulbasaur gets the intelligence Berry Powder, Edwin thought to himself. And some of the orange... gah, this is too much work. Without thinking further, he separated his Berry Powder into six parts, one-sixth of which he gave to each of his Pokemon, leaving half for later.
"I think this is a simpler solution, no?" Edwin poured the powder into three water dishes, mixing it so that it dissolved under the influence of the universal solvent. "Unfortunately, you three can't eat until after the contest. It might negatively influence your ability to react." That statement was directed at his Pokemon, who were sipping the berry water slowly.
Nina was having second thought's as they stood outside the stadium, her eyes darted around the area before she fidgeted with her sleeves and she heard Tai sigh "Oh no you don't. This is our first contest, and we're doing it together." He smiled warmly at her and gave a thumbs up "'Sides, what's the worst that can happen?"
"Nina." She moved her gaze over to Edwin, who had spoken up as well "This situation has happened multiple times in my career as a performer. Seize the day, and you'll enjoy the moment; otherwise you cannot hope to overcome your fears of people. I fade out sometimes, and I become nervous, but doing so with a crowd you barely know is unnecessary." Edwin smiled and Nina blushed, her eyes wide "Even if you do embarrass yourself, no one will likely notice if you do something wrong. They usually assume it's part of your performance."
"So come on. We'll do this together." Tai nodded and grinned as he led them inside, Nina smiled absently and clutched her fists determined "Right, we're in this together" her blush had yet to die down and she smiled softly at the two boys backs "Thanks guys. . ." The large main lobby opened up to the tree trainers, blue marble floors and pink painted walls created the foundation of the lobby. Halloween decorations were scattered all through the lobby, pictures of ghosts hanging on the wall and strings full of bats hung across the walls. Pumpkins were placed at each and every corner, and desk. Many people dotted the lobby, some of them looking at the portraits of past winners while others just sat around on the many leather couches and seats.
"Wow. This place is big, imagine the rest of the place." Tai murmured in awe while he walked down the lobby, coming up to the nice lavender front desk and searched around for anyone of service. A merry woman popped up, with nice pink hair falling down her back and a slim white dress on. She briefly reminded the trainers of Nurse Joy.
"Hello. How may I help you?" The woman smiled "We're here to Register for our Kanto Contest Passes!!" Tai eager as ever yelled out and the woman smiled warmly and motioned to a small mechanism in front of her. "If you could please swipe your Trainer Card through this machine, your information will be recorded into our database."
"Oh, well you see. We don't have Trainer Cards, we have these instead." Tai held up his red Pokédex, the lady looked shocked. "Oh, okay then. We've dealt with these a couple of times. Please hand me your Pokédex's." The nurse grabbed the three trainer's machines and fumbled through their settings. After a few moments of waiting, three plastic cards were spat out of a small machine. The cards were red with a yellow ribbon, a small box with their ID pictures were on the front of their cards.
Tai had eagerly grabbed his contest pass and looked at the information on the back, he was a Normal Rank Coordinator. "Now, I am happy to present each of you a Ribbon Case and a Powder Jars. I'm sure you know what each of these are for." The woman asked and they all nodded as they were handed small red, green, and blue cases with a ribbon image on it. They each took five stout jars, they were a dull yellow and transparent. The woman waved as the trainer went to go sit on a blue couch with a table in front of them.
"Okay, the contest starts in an hour. In the mean time, we can prepare by making Berry Powder." Tai grinned as he examined the machine placed in the center of the table in front of them. It was a large cylinder machine with a transparent bottle taking up most of the machine, the machine itself was tan. Which held the transparent bottle in place, the machine had a storage compartment at the top with an orange top. The top had five buttons at the top, and a lid in the center of the top where berries were put in.
"Well Daisy said since it was our first contest, we should make powder out of all five berry types. Lucky for us, we each have two of each flavor. So we should each put in one of our berries for each flavor." Tai said as he opened the small lid of the machine, and tossed a single Cheri berry in.
"Each flavor?" she heard Edwin murmur before he dropped a Cheri berry in as well "This is gonna be a lot of food" Nina thought about Tat, he was like her resident waste bin, whatever no one else at, the mouse definitely would finish it off, giggling to herself she dropped a Cheri berry in as well "And now...we each SMASH A BUTTON!" Tai exclaimed, the first to begin pressing button's furiously.
"Hehe, he's so enthusiastic" she smiled softly and snickered behind her had at Tai before pressing her own button's down on the machine, which was obviously going along swell, because it whizzed loudly and sparkling red powder dropped down into the transparent container, while the button's rapid blinking dulled down to a bright yellow
indicating the process was finished, the orange top slid off to reveal a bright red powder which filled up half of the large container. They repeated this process four more times in order to get each flavor; Tai wiped his forehead and held up his right swollen index finger "Aww. Look at my poor finger."
Nina shook her head before laughing lightly, then she pulled out her 3 Pokéballs, allowing Tat, Gale and Caterpie to come out, she each handed them a bowl of the mixed powders and they all looked at her like she was crazy, Gale was the first to speak, pointing at her dish "What are we supposed to do. . . snort it?" as if on cue, Tat cautiously sniffed the powder, only sneezing afterwards when some of it wafted through his nose.
Nina blushed embarrassed and gave a sheepish laugh "Hehe oh right. . . sorry" she added some water to her bowl like Edwin did and mixed the contents, her Pokémon then began gulping it down each at their own pace, though Tat had finished before all of them "I'm still hungry. . ." he rubbed his tummy and Nina sweat dropped.
This was going to be a long wait.
Tai was relieved, and let out a deep sigh. Edwin, Nina and he were standing in the center of the lobby. Where a large screen came to life, and showed four sets of branches. They were the groupings for the Contests, each tree of trainers belonged to a certain block.
Tai was relieved to find out that he didn't belong in the same groups as Edwin and Nina, they seemed classy...and better coordinators than him.
Block "A"
• Edwin Fortescue
Tai turned to his companions, the bells on his hat jingling all the while. He grinned, "Good luck out there!" He gave a thumbs up before heading off into the Block "C" locker room.
Tai shivered violently, he was nervous. When he entered the room, there were two other coordinators staring right back at him. A young boy, a couple years younger than Tai, with bright brown eyes and dark brown hair, wearing a super hero costume. Then a girl with sandy blonde hair and radiant green eyes, she was about Tai's age and wore a tinker bell costume.
Tai sweatdropped, it was so tense in there. He took his seat on one of the red benches and looked across from him, the boy had his arms folded and glared at Tai. He turned to see the girl doing the same. He sighed,
"I hope the others aren't as nervous as I am."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Ladies and Gentleman!!" A woman yelled through a microphone, she stood in the center of "C" Block's first contest arena. She had vibrant orange hair and bright blue eyes, she wore a nice pink dress and elegant, white gloves.

"The Pewter City Pokemon Contests will now begin!" She yelled out with a peppy demeanor, the crowd roared.

"Now, let's meet our Judge for tonight! Please welcome the Pokemon Fanclub Chariman!" An elderly, stout man wearing a black hat and suit waved. He wore black sunglasses along a bushy white mustache and beard. The woman turned and raised her arm towards the large score board, where a picture of five ribbons appeared.

The ribbons were golden, an upside-down pentagon with the bottom two points indenting to give the ribbon a sort of heart shape. Each with two small strips of felt coming off of them, different colors for each.

"The coordinators who earn their way to victory, will walk away with the much esteemed Normal Rank Ribbons. For Coolness, Strength, Beauty, Intelligence, and Cuteness. Those of you skilled enough to earn all five ribbons here, will get to compete in the Super Rank Contest Hall in Celadon City! My name is Vivian and I'm completely honored to be your MC tonight, three other MC's are on duty for the other blocks as well!" The woman ended her speech as the crowd roared.

"In the preliminary round, pokemon and coordinators are judged for Performance quality on their entrance. A pokemon is allowed a maximum of two attacks to use for their entrance. So prepare yourself for a display of beauty and precision!" The woman shouted out with glee as she motioned her hand out towards the curtains behind her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tai was nervous, his teeth clattering and knees buckling. This was the first time he performed in front of an audience before, ever. He looked besides him to see the two other coordinators standing tall with confidence, Tai sucked it up and let out a deep breath.
"First up in this Coolness Contest is Contestant #2, this is his first contest! His friends all know him as, Tai!" MC Vivian yelled out, Tai grinned and ran out into the middle of the large amphitheatre. The crowd roared as the spotlight showered over Tai, the boy smirked.
"Yeah! Charco, GO!" Tai grinned as he leapt backwards, Charco grinning as he appeared in a dazzle of light.
<Haha! Spotlight on me please!>
"Hmph. Use Ember!" Charco grinned and began to continuously spin forward, releasing large fireball after fireball. The multiple fireballs were slung into the air lazily, they followed a large arc. The fireballs releasing beautiful embers that fell to the stage beautifully, the judge taking note of the beautiful attack.
"And Charco takes the stage with an outstanding Ember Attack!" The MC shouted as the fireballs began to descend.
"Now! Metal Claw!!" Tai grinned, Charco smirked and leaped into the air. He pulled back his right arm, his claws grew in size and gained a metallic sheen. He swiped at every fireball that came his way, the balls of fire exploding into a barrage of red, orange, and metallic colors that showered over the contest floor. Charco proceeded to fall down towards the stage and land in his designated circle,
"Simply amazing! The two have really won this crowd over with that very Cool attack!" The MC grinned as Tai and Charco struck the same pose, a nice bow with their right arm forward and right leg back.
<Hehe. Who would've thought we'd actually do good?> Charco peeked out of one of his closed eyes and looked at his trainer, Tai looked at the Charmander and smirked.
"Yup. What'd ya expect?" Tai grinned, the Charmander chuckling,
<For us to fail misserably.> Tai grinned and sweatdropped, "Me too." Both Tai and Charco now waited patiently as the other two coordinators made their entrances.
The pretty tinkerbell girl released an Oddish and made an outstanding entrance with Sweet Scent and Stun Spore, the superhero boy releasing a Spearow and making an impressive entrance with Fury Attack and Growl. Tai and Charco flinched, the other two were very good.
"And now we wait for the judge to administer his examinations. The person with the least appealing pokemon will be eliminated and have to sit the rest of his contest out!" The MC said as the short Chariman stood up from his seat and walked over to the pokemon, cane in hand.
Since Tai performed first, he stood in the first circle. The circle farthest from the judge, the boy let out a contempt sigh and watched as he administered a check-up on the Pokemon.
<Psst. Tai!> Tai kept his eyes on the judge as he lowered his head a bit,
"What?"
<Should I just stand here and look cool?> Tai nodded, the Charmander gave a thumbs up. Tai didn't bother to look at what Charco was doing after, he felt a few nudges on his ankles. The boy proceeded to kick Charco to warn him of the oncoming judge.
"Well what a fine Charmander this is!" The chairman shouted,
"Thanks! His name's Charco!"
"And what cool sunglasses!" The judge grinned, Tai's eyes widened as he looked down. The boy sweatdropped to see Charco standing in a cool pose with his sun glasses in place, Charco grinned.
"His scales are also very glossy, his claws are a nice white color and his flame is absolutely brilliant." The judge administered his check-up, Tai felt quiet confident now. The judge walked over back to his booth and sat down promptly,
"So Mr. Chairman, what is your final verdict?" Vivian inquired, the chairman grinned.
"Well after I have carefully examined these pokemon's condition, AND taken into account their cool entrances. I have made my decision on what two coordinators move on to the next round." The judge proceeded to type in a few keys and the screen buzzed to life once more, two frames were placed there. One picture was that of the small superhero boy, and the second was of Tai!
Tai and Charco were dumbfounded, <We...actually made it to the second roun?!> Charco grinned and leaped into his trainer's arms. Tai grinned as the tinkerbell girl made her way towards the locker room, the superhero boy took his place in the trainer box opposite of Tai.
"Aww. I wanted to battle the pretty girl." Tai whined, Charco sweatdropped.
"The second round consists of a Contest Battle!" The screen was blue with a picture of both contestants on the screen, and the Normal Rank Cool ribbon in between the two. A red bar was underneath both trainer's, indicating their points. A clockw as placed at the bottom of the screen.
"Our contestants will have two minutes to show our judge their battling abilities! And now, our battle for the Cool Ribbon...will BEGIN!!" The MC shouted as the clock began to count down from two minutes.
"Charco!!"
"Spearow! Take the stage!!"
Tai yelled and extended his hand, Charco ran on Tai's arm and leaped into the battle arena. The boy's spearow soaring overhead and calmly landing on the dirt floor.
"Peck attack, Spearow!"
"Charco, Ember!"
The brown bird swiftly flapped its red wings and became air born, the Spearow made its way over to Charco and pointed its razor sharp beak at the Charmander. Charco waited until the last minute to quickly swipe his tail in front of the bird, and send a fireball which collided with the bird. Tai looked up at the score boards to see his own score fall just a bit, then smirked as the boy's went down even further.
'Gotta start doing some cool attacks. If he has any.'
The charred Spearow was sent skidding across the stage floor. Charco grinned,
"Smokescreen!" Tai yelled as Charco released a stream of dark gas that quickly covered the entire field.
"Don't ever mess around with me." The boy spat out as Spearow quickly made his way towards the air once again, escaping the cloud of smoke. Tai clenched his teeth as the Spearow came down,
"Fury Attack!"
The Spearow swiftly dug its beak into Charco's orange skin repeatedly, the attack was continuous. Tai swore softly, and quickly snapped his fingers.
"Growl!" Charco struggled to open his mouth, once he did he released a high-pitched whining noise that forced the Spearow to retreat.
"Pursuit, Spearow!!"
"Quick, Metal Claw!"
The Spearow's beak gained a dark violet hue as he made his way towards Charco. The Charmander dashed at the oncoming Spearow and slashed at the bird's side with his metallic claws. Tai grinned as he saw the boy's score drop alone this time.
"Scratch!"
"Leer!"
Charco began to make his way towards the injured Spearow, only to freeze up as the bird sent a chilling glare at Charco. The lizard felt a chill go down his spine as his defense was lowered, Tai's score was lowering faster now.
The boy's eyes grew wide as he noticed the time, 0:30.
"Quick, Metal Claw!"
"Fury Attack!"
Spearow, with its superior speed, began to dig its beak into Charco again. The injured Charmander's health was depleting fast due to the Leer attack,
"Come on, Charco!" Tai yelled, only ten second left. Charco growled out and slashed at the bird, claw marks visible on its feathers as it was flung back towards its trainer. The Spearow lay there, defeated.
"Time!" The MC yelled out, "Tai and Charco are the winners!" The MC shouted. Tai and Charco made their signature bow before making his way towards Vivian and the judge,
"We gladly present you with the Normal Rank Cool Ribbon!" The judge grinned, Tai smiled as he took the ribbon in his hand. He quickly made his way across the battle field and into the hall, after shooting a quick peace sign to the camera.
"Hi mom!" He shouted before Charco proceeded to push to the boy inside. The hall was dark, but Tai's bright smile penetrated the darkness. The light of the locker room soon opened up to the boy, the girl and boy glared at each other. Then at Tai, the boy was completely oblivious as he opened his ribbon case. The inside of the case had four compartments, the top 'shelf' had the words: NORMAL RANK, etched into the blue leather. The boy placed the cool ribbon in the center indentation before looking up,
"Good contest out there guys!" Both coordinators glared at Tai then looked away, the boy sweatdropped and looked at the large plasma screen television which was on the opposite wall of Tai. He adjusted his jester hat as the MC announced the winners of the cool contest.
After feeding his Pokemon berry water, Edwin began to systematically check his Pokemon's movesets against the five movetypes.
"Moves... Tch. Looks like I'm not going to have an easy time." There was an overwhelming majority of Smart moves, with Tough leading in second. He had only 1 Cute move, and no Cool or Beauty moves whatsoever. This situation isn't great for me, he thought. But I can prevail. I must prevail. The entrance is as important is everything else. Bulbasaur, you are my main performer tonight; but don't worry, Pidgey. You'll get your turn during the Beauty and Cute contests. Now then... here's our strategy." His voice level dropped to a whisper until the briefing was complete, and the blocks of the contest flickered to life on the big screen.
Block "A"
• Edwin Fortescue
• Chaz Thomas
• Jasmine Hoaka
Judge: Pokemaniac Bill
Block "B"
• Nina Chambers
• Anthony Kenzo
• Angelina Ishiki
Judge: Daisy Oak
Block "C"
• Taichi Sugimori
• Corinna Shigeru
• Joshua Midori
Judge: Pokemon Fan Club President
Block "D"
• Leonard Radcliff (OOC: It's clearly Daniel =P)
• Rupert Izuna
• Alexis Nanado
Judge: Nurse Joy
"Good. I don't have to match up with any of the people that I am familiar with." Edwin nodded in relief. "I'm not sure if I'm up to facing against them tonight."
"Contestants to your dressing rooms!" A voice boomed from somewhere in the hall. He hurried to a door marked with a red 'A'.
Inside were... a kid dressed up as a zombie, scarcely ten yet, and an older girl about the age of twelve wearing a gold gown, resplendent with silvery ribbons. Edwin gazed at them in acknowledgement.
"Alea iacta est. Bona fortuna." With these curt words, he drew aside the curtains and entered the stage, leaving the other two stunned by his suddenness. His resolve was steel, after all; he could not afford to lose as a performer, here and now, to a few non-competitive dramatists; they might be good, but he was better. He had to be.
"Ahem. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The Pewter City Pokemon Contests shall begin in one minute." A jolly man, clothed in a resplendent white tuxedo with a pink shirt, stood in front of a microphone, smile hanging on his face like a permanent fixture.
"Our judge... ahem, our most esteemed judge is Sonezaki Masaki, known among his friends as simply Bill the Pokemon Maniac, gwahaha!" The man smiled, pointing at a younger, brown-haired man beside him, sporting a blue shirt with a black bow tie and a pair of white pants. The younger man - or rather, Bill - also smiled, waving to the audience and the contestants.
"Presenting our coordinators!" The announcer now gestured towards the stage door, Edwin noted. Silently, he motioned to Bulbasaur. Get ready.
"
Who shall win the five ribbons? Who shall be the best at all the contest has to offer? Let the contest begin! Now, the rules, gwahahaha!
In the preliminary round, pokemon and coordinators are judged for Performance quality on their entrance. A pokemon is allowed a maximum of two attacks to use for their entrance! And that's it for today, friends, so let's watch the young 'uns do their stuff!" The man's speech ended. "Let the show begin!"
"Contestant number one! Mr. Edwin Fortescue! And a musician, too! With that violin in his hand, he's sure to dazzle us all with his performance!"
"What an interesting choice of words, announcer. Fushigidane! Prelude!" It was a well-rehearsed action; instantly, a yellow powder spread over the arena, creating a glittering effect.
"That's amazing! A cool graphics effect, to be sure! But will this young man give us a cool performance?" The master of ceremonies began to comment on his performance. Edwin paid him no heed.
"Don't let the spores fade into nothingness yet! Bulbasaur, overture!" This is going to require a lot of concentration to pull off, Edwin thought to himself as he was firmly grabbed by the ankles and spun into the air. His coat-tails caught the powder, the centrifugal force of the Vine Whip creating an air stream that whipped around him, a spiral of golden spores that wrapped around him like a translucent whirlwind. All the while, Fushigidane kept using Vine Whip to spin him around whenever he was just about to land, so that his feet never touched the ground.
"Amazing! Simply astounding! His trust in his Pokemon allows him to defy gravity without the aid of a flying-type attack!" The master of ceremonies was roaring.
"My... er... thanks, Bulbasaur." The performance concluded as a dizzy Edwin finally came to rest at the centre of the stage several minutes later, taking a bow. "Let's... not try that again at the next thing, huh? This might look cool, but it doesn't feel great. At least I didn't have to play my violin, though; that's reserved for the Beauty performance."
The judge came around to examine their Pokemon's conditions. Bulbasaur sported one of Edwin's spare bow ties, in black. Naturally, it was Pokemaniac Bill. He smiled at the black bow tie that Bulbasaur wore.
"You know, that would look cool if I were a Bulbasaur. I've only been a Clefairy, though. Creative, to be sure." He smiled at Edwin briefly, and moved on.
After a few minutes, the results were processed. Edwin advanced to the next round, along with the girl.
"Phew. For a few seconds there, I thought we weren't going to make it." Edwin relaxed, brushing off a sweat drop.
Bulbasaur glanced at Edwin, puzzled. -What happened to your newfound confidence?-
"I can only use my confidence sometimes, Bulbasaur, unfortunately." Edwin scratched the back of his head a little. "Well. Get yourself battle-ready, Bulbasaur. Prepare to engage!" He took his place at the trainer box. Opposite him, the elaborately dressed girl did the same.
"The second round consists of a Contest Battle!" The screen had pictures of both contestants on it, backed by a cool blue, and the Normal Rank Cool ribbon was mounted in the middle of the display. A red bar was underneath both trainer's pictures, indicating their points. A timer was placed at the bottom of the screen, with 2:00 on it.
"Our contestants will have two minutes to show our judge their battling abilities! And now, our battle for the Cool Ribbon...will BEGIN! GWAHAHA!" The master of ceremonies was even more excited than in the first round.
"Cast the die, Fushigidane!" Edwin directed his Bulbasaur forward. What was the girl's Pokemon again? A female Nidoran? Well, it shouldn't be too tough. "Vine Whip, Bulbasaur!" Green tentacles reached for the spiked blue creature in the centre of the arena.
The girl was unfazed, however. "Nidoran, Double Kick!" With two stamps on the ground, the Nidoran avoided the attack and flew into the air. "Follow up with a Poison Sting!" Purple needles flew at Bulbasaur, but it took the attack without taking too much damage.
"Poison-types don't match well with Poison-types." Edwin said aloud. Analyzing the situation had always been his strong suit. "This means, of course, that Bulbasaur resists your Double Kick, and only takes neutral damage from Poison Sting. On top of that, he can't be poisoned because he has a secondary poison type. "
The girl kept up her smile, slightly menacing. "Why are you wasting your time on trivial explanations?"
"Because... I will certainly win this contest! Bulbasaur, Sleep Powder!" Edwin directed his Bulbasaur, who spread a silvery dust over the arena, putting Nidoran to sleep easily. He looked up at the points gauge. While he had some decreases, the girl's gauge was lower than his by more than a little. He grinned back at the girl, coolly.
"Good game, no redo. Bulbasaur! Finish with... Leech Seed!" At his command, Bulbasaur fired a seed out of its bulb, which then proceeded to wrap vines around the sleeping Nidoran, sapping all of its energy. Edwin took a bow, then left the stage; his opponent's Pokemon was unable to battle.
"I, as Pokemaniac Bill, gladly present you with the Normal Rank Cool Ribbon!" Bill patted Bulbasaur on the head lightly, and he extended his hand. Edwin shook it firmly, taking a bow.
Back in the dressing room, he inserted his ribbon firmly into the case provided for it. He smiled brightly at his fellow coordinators, who grimaced back at him, especially the girl. He merely continued to smile.
"There's no need to be uncivil."
Still smiling with exhilaration, he walked into the lobby to check the other winners of the tournament. Seeing Tai there already, he waved to him and presented his ribbon case to the boy in the jester suit.
"I take it you've won the contest?" Edwin asked Tai casually.
"Cool, Cool. . . Ohh how can I make him look cool?" Nina stared at Gale and then glanced at Tat and then at the accessories she was looking through, she had seen Tai's performance and she didn't want to copy him "Maybe a scarf or a hat or something" she mumbled to herself, as she continued to dig through the chest filled with all sorts of items.
"Get ready dear, your first to perform" she heard someone say before heading towards the contest hall and Nina had gotten nervous "O-Okay!"
"Nina! Calm down!" Nina looked at Gale, who sprayed her with a light Water Gun "Now, take a deep breath" Nina did as told "Step away from the chest" Nina backed away from the chest and watched as Gale dived in the crate of items "Now you think of an appeal while I find something cool for him to wear okay" Nina gave a slight nod and turned away from Gale "K-Kay"
"Ladies and Gentleman!!" A woman yelled through a microphone, she stood in the center of "B" Block's first contest arena. She had vibrant blue hair and bright green eyes; she wore a pretty green dress and elegant, white gloves.
"The Pewter City Pokemon Contests will now begin!" She yelled out with a peppy demeanor, the crowd roared.
"Now, let's meet our Judge for tonight! Please welcome Daisy Oak!" Daisy was sitting there in her lab coat and sandals, she gave a slight wave to the camera, and a smile the woman turned and raised her arm towards the large score board, where a picture of five ribbons appeared.
The ribbons were golden, an upside-down pentagon with the bottom two points indenting to give the ribbon a sort of heart shape. Each with two small strips of felt coming off of them, different colors for each.
"The coordinators who earn their way to victory, will walk away with the much esteemed Normal Rank Ribbons. For Coolness, Strength, Beauty, Intelligence, and Cuteness. Those of you skilled enough to earn all five ribbons here, will get to compete in the Super Rank Contest Hall in Celadon City! My name is Miriam and I'm completely honored to be your MC tonight, three other MC's are on duty for the other blocks as well!" The woman ended her speech as the crowd roared.
"In the preliminary round, Pokémon and coordinators are judged for Performance quality on their entrance. A Pokémon is allowed a maximum of two attacks to use for their entrance. So prepare yourself for a display of beauty and precision!" The woman shouted out with glee as she motioned her hand out towards the curtains behind her.
Nina took a deep breath and calmed her nerves, thinking of Tai and Edwin's words, she didn't even see what Gale had pulled out for Tat, because she hastily recalled the turtle and mouse once a woman ushered her to stand behind the curtain "I hope I do well" she thought closing her eyes and waiting for the inevitable to happen.
"First up in this Cool Contest is Contestant #1 of Block "B" this is her first contest, so please give a round of applause for Nina!" MC Miriam yelled out, as the curtains rose and Nina walked on the stage, instantly freezing at all the people watching her "Are you okay dear" she hear Miriam ask and Nina blushed and nodded "Uh-huh. . . I'm fine" she gripped her broom like it was a bat and tossed up her Pokéball "Tat spotlight's on you!" Nina swung her broom and hit the ball high into the air, it popped open and a flash of sparkles surrounded the mouse as she landed, striking a cool pose, his long red scarf wrapped around his neck and the two tails flowed behind him.
"Oh yeah! I rock!" he struck another pose and the crowed roared.
"Okay Tat, I want you to start off with Quick Attack!" Nina pulled out several berries and tossed them into the air, Tat was quick to zoom after them and catch them all in the twin tails of his scarf, Nina smiled "Alright, now use Bite!" Tat nodded and whirled around sharply, causing the berries to fly into the air, forming an arch he shot off the ground with Quick Attack and gathered every last berry in his mouth, landing in the middle of the stage, he used Bite, chomping down on them harshly and swallowing them in one gulp.
The crowd cheered for the performance and Nina
"Amazing! Nina and Tat sure have won this crowd over with that very Cool attack!" The MC said and Nina gave a sheepish smile, while Tat looked extremely happy.
"I really like this scarf. . . can I keep it?" Tat fiddled with the twin tails and Nina sweat dropped as they headed back to the waiting room and waited for the others to finish. The girl, Angelina, she was dressed as a Pirate and had a female Nidoran, that preformed with Scratch and Double Kick and the boy Anthony, he was dressed as a Cowboy, he had a Pikachu, that preformed with Swift and Thunder Shock.
"And now we wait for the judge to administer his examinations. The person with the least appealing Pokémon will be eliminated and have to sit the rest of his contest out!" The Miriam said as Daisy rose from her seat and walked over to the trio and their Pokémon. Nina had to clench her fists at her side because she was too nervous and didn't want to get disqualified or something, she froze when Daisy came to examine Tat.
"What an adorable Rattata you have here" Daisy murmured with a small smile as she pat the small mouse on the head
"Thank you ma'am, his name is Tat."
"And this scarf looks cute on him, so cool!"
"I see you've taken good care of this little guy, he's healthy looking and he's so adorable, nice strong teeth and a fine coat of hair" Daisy continued her check up and once she was done, Nina felt a bit more worried, because it sounded like Tat was looking more cute than cool. After looking over the other's Pokémon, Daisy went back to her seat.
"So Daisy, what is your final verdict?"Miriam inquired, the chairman grinned.
"Well after I have carefully examined these Pokémon's condition, and I've taken into account their cool entrances. I have made my decision on what two coordinators move on to the next round." The judge proceeded to type in a few keys and the screen buzzed to life once more, two frames were placed there. One picture was Anthony, and the second was Nina.
Nina was shocked "I made it to the next round?" she couldn't keep the grin off her face as she scooped Tat into her arms "We did it Tat!" Angelina walked off stage, while Anthony took his place opposite of her; he tilted his hat to her and smiled, green eyes crinkled warmly in her direction, hidden by messy blond locks Nina couldn't help but smile softly in response.
"The second round consists of a Contest Battle!" The screen was blue with a picture of both contestants on the screen, and the Normal Rank Cool ribbon in between the two. A red bar was underneath both trainer's, indicating their points. A clock was placed at the bottom of the screen.
"Our contestants will have two minutes to show our judge their battling abilities! And now, our battle for the Cool Ribbon...will BEGIN!!" Miriam shouted as the clock began to count down from two minutes.
"Tat spotlight's on you!"
"Pikachu standby!"
Tat ran on the stage, while Pikachu hopped off Anthony's shoulder, the boy in response tipped his has to Nina "May the best win" she nodded in response "Yeah"
"Pikachu use Swift!" Pikachu nodded and shot a flurry of stars at Tat, who dodged them all "Alright Tat! Quick Attack!" Tat zoomed at Pikachu, ramming the mouse in its stomach with his head. Nina glanced at her scoreboard, noticing Anthony's point went down just a bit "Pikachu Thunder Shock!"
The speed from the attack was much too quick and Tat had gotten shocked by the stream of lightning "Okay, Tat try Tail Whip!" Tat nodded and ran up to Pikachu, waiting until the last second to whirl around and slap Pikachu in the face, the Pikachu scowled and Growled at Tat in response.
"I've gotta start getting his points down. . . but I gotta make it look cool"
Nina looked at Tat's scarf thoughtfully "Maybe that could work!" smiling confidently Nina commanded Tat to run circles around Pikachu using Quick Attack, the mouse did as told until Pikachu was wrapped up to the neck in one of the twin tails from the scarf. Nina smiled "I got him!" she was about to tell Tat to toss Pikachu, but Anthony surprised her by attacking first.
"Thunder Shock Pikachu!"
As she watched Tat light up like a Christmas Tree and watched as her points drop, she suddenly realized how foolish her move was, because Pikachu could easily use the Scarf as a conductor and shock Tat while he's tied up "Tat, try get away with Quick Attack!" the scarf was quickly unraveled and Tat was about to make a mad dash across the field but Pikachu had stepped on the end of the scarf, causing Tat to halt and get flung backwards, upon being yanked by the scarf.
Nina glanced at the clock. It was at 1:30 and Nina then looked at her points, Anthony was in the lead and she looked sad "I. . . I'm going to loose. Its no use" she thought sadly, before glancing at Tat, who was taking the battle into his own hands since Nina was off in lala land. Pikachu's cry of pain had directed her attention to the mouse and she noticed with wide eyes that Tat had bitten down harshly on the Pikachu's tail, Tat had somehow managed to break free of Pikachu's hold on its Scarf and turned around and bit the mouse, its point were steadily dropping, but they were no where near Nina's, just yet. . .
She bit her lip nervously and noticed the clock was now at :59 seconds and Nina was racking her brain trying to figure out what she could do in 59 seconds to get Anthony's point lowered quickly "Tat let go and use Tackle!" she decided to wing it, tossing Strategy out the door because she didn't have enough time to think.
The Rattata released Pikachu's tail, noting with a satisfied grin that his teeth left an imprint and he rushed the mouse from behind, ramming his head into its unprotected back "Don't give it time to stand either! Use Quick Attack!" And Tat did just as Nina said, hitting the Pikachu with Quick Attack, launching the mouse in the air "Now try using your scarf and slam Pikachu!"
Nina glanced at the Clock, that was on 10 seconds, Anthony still had more points than her, but not by much. . . Tat had successfully wrapped Pikachu up in mid air, using the tails of his scarf as a make shift lasso, the mouse then jumped high into the air, flipped and the whirled around and bought Pikachu down on the ground, the mouse landed with a harsh thud, right when the timer rang too.
Nina looked sadly over to Tat, who had won the battle, but she was afraid that they had lost, from what she had last seen, Anthony was in the lead. Biting her lip, she looked at the screen that would decide the outcome of their battle.
"And the winner is. . .!"
Nina shut her eyes tightly and clenched her fist, waiting for the woman to say Anthony and for the crowd to cheer for him. Except it never came, opening her eyes Nina gasped when she realized it was her face on the screen, she glanced at her points and then at Anthony's. She had only beaten him by a fraction of a point, she was this close to loosing, her first contest too.
Nina felt her legs give out and she fell to her knees on the floor, while Tat happily bounced into her arms "We Won Nina! We Won!" he exclaimed happily before sobering up "Can we go get some lunch? I'm starving!" Miriam walked over to Nina, asking if the girl was alright and she nodded, standing up and following the woman towards Daisy, who was smiling.
"We gladly present you with the Normal Rank Cool Ribbon!" Nina blushed and said a small thanks before taking the ribbon, she then turned around and ran up to Anthony, he was murmuring words of encouragement to hi Pikachu when she stopped before him, her cheeks were slightly red and she gave the boy a sheepish smile "That was a great battle! You Pikachu was really tough! I mean. . . you. . . you would've won instead of me, I only beat you by a fraction." she awkwardly extended her hand and the Cowboy's lips twitched and his green eyes crinkled before he smiled and shook it "Yeah, you got lucky this time, perhaps we'll meet again in the Super Contests in Celadon" Nina nodded "Y-Yeah" Anthony released her hand and waved Nina off, the girl then made her way towards the locker room, placing her ribbon in its case.
"I still can't believe we won" she thought taking a seat, congratulating both Tai and Edwin on their victories Tat was in her arms, messing with the scarf.
"Hey Nina. . . you think they'll let me keep this scarf? Its really handy and I could carry my food in it!" Nina sweat dropped, leave it to Tat to find some useful way to stock snacks "I think we have to give it back once the contest is over" Tat aww'd and grumbled something about greedy humans and them keeping him away from his food.
Nina just sighed "So now what?"
OOC: Sorry if the post sucks. I am not one for contests myself.
Standing in a large room, Leonard Argyle Radcliff did anything but stand out. Past his height which made him appear older, Leon was an everyday trainer who investigated the contest that appear in town. Engulfed in a crowd, he remained focused on the large screen which was set to display the contest brackets. Due to the popularity of Pokemon contests, Leon decided to enter out of pure curiosity. At the same time, earning another victory on his long list of previous accomplishments wouldn't hurt. "First up, cool contest," Leon muttered to himself. "I already have a plan on who I am using there," he snickered, holding on to a evil smirk as he once again eyed up the screen and much to his pleasure it had been granted life. But importantly, information that proved be very valuable.
Block "D"...Nurse Joy. Interesting. At least I'll have some eye candy to look at while the other competitors attempt to impress the crowd, he thought to himself.
"Contestants to your dressing rooms!" A deep voice boldly stated with such powerful volume that it could be heard over the roar of the contestants and the crowd. Leon shifted through the crowd, his young rebellious Pikachu perched on his shoulder. He snuck through the door, and reached deep into his standard utility bag and pulled out a can of spray paint, which earned him strange yet curious looks from his fellow trainers.
One was a young boy close to Leon's age, possibly thirteen, was dressed as a mountain climber complete with a fake bread, a strange hat and the full get up, boosting equipment too. The other one was a girl, at least twelve, was wearing a pirate outfit and was sporting an eye patch and a peg leg and allowed her Pidgey to relax on her shoulder. As Leon shook his spray can, he stared back and his opponents. Their mouths were open but no words came out. This fact angered Leon and his temper could not control himself much longer. "Got a problem with my spray can?" he asked with a smile, attempting to act kind for the moment.
"No...not really," the boy began, his face still conveying confusion of untold levels. "But where is your costume?"
"This is changing room is not?" Leon displayed a second, seemingly heavier bag and dropped it on the ground. A terribly loud CLANK entered the air upon contact. "My costume is in there. I will be putting it on after I prepare my Pokemon. Now if you will excuse me, I must get ready. Go out and entertain the crowd for a bit. I'll be awhile."
"Welcome to the Pewter City Pokemon Contests!" A voice roared. With all its power and energy, one would expect the voice to come from a young, energetic man. However, in a strange twist of fate, it came from a burly short man with a noble long beard. In many ways, he resembled a dwarf. "Are you ready for amazing displays of Pokemon prowess? Are you ready for the show of a lifetime? Without a doubt, you will experience something like no other, right here tonight in Pewter City!" The crowd exploded after the unnecessarily long introduction. After motioning the crowd to calm down, the dwarf raised the microphone up and began to speak once again: "Our judge for the competitors of Block 'D' is the beautiful, kind and just about perfect Nurse Joy of your local Pokemon Center not to be confused with all the others. She is my personal favorite of them all." After the lame joke, the crowd let out an extended laugh, some sounded forced, others were genuine. "Without further ado, I present the contestants of Block 'D'!"
"First up, Leonard Radcliff!" The crowd became quiet, so quiet that it became scary. After a few moments, the sounds of crickets emerged. The announcer became nervous, and attempted to stir some excitement. "Okay....let's try again. Leonard Radcliff!" Nothing happened.
"He is getting ready still!" The boy cried. "He has to get changed and prepare his Pokemon. At least that is what he told me."
"Well, then I am afraid that will get him DQ'ed from today's competition. What a shame!" However, the fates turned against the impatient dwarf as Nurse Joy grabbed the man's beard gently but sternly and pulled him to her. She whispered in his ear and released him. "I am sorry for that but Nurse Joy will allow our disappearing competitor to compete permitting he arrives after the others finish their displays."
"In that case," the announcer quietly stated while clearing his throat. "Let's have Rupert Izuna began our show!" The boy in the mountain climber outfit took center stage, revealing his Pokemon to the crowd. In a statement of true dedication to his gimmick, Rupert summoned a Geodude to be his partner. Rupert made his appeal to the crowd and won over a few fans, as shown by the cheers.
The next contestant was Alexis Nanado, who with her Spearow made a fun appeal but her show was deemed too comedic and haphazard by Nurse Joy as she was forced to tend to Spearow's wounds after colliding with a wall head on during a tackle attack. However, her chance of joining the final rounds was not impossible.
"And with the closing moments on Alexis' entertaining performance, we are waiting on Mr. Leonard Radcliff, which seems not to be showing-"
The announcers sudden stop mid-sentence was not without reason. In the center of the arena, a small tornado arose seemingly from nowhere. Despite its ominous aura, the winds were controlled and did not destroy the arena. In fact, it caused no damage. Suddenly, flames engulfed the tornado and whipped small flaming bits around. In the center of the tornado, a pillar of fire shaped like a dragon rose seemingly from nowhere. The dragon flame roared with intensity and appeared to almost dominate and consume the arena in fury until it was halted by a single object: a steel sword. Thrown into the center, the flame was cut and disappeared, along with the twister revealing a Dratini at the center, clad in black paint granting it a tribal feel. The sword wielder arose from the crowd and jumped down into the contest arena. It was man, fairly average in height, wearing glistening silver armor ripped right from the medieval times. An opulent blue and gold cape hung from his shoulders. He grasped his thrown sword and stood tall, facing the judges.
"What the?" the announcer stated. "W...wh....who are you?!"
"I heard you were waiting for me," the armored figure stated. Digging his blade into the ground, the figure removed his closed helmet to finally reveal his face. At first, all that could be seen was a blonde mop of hair, but after shaking his head dramatically, a pair of deep blue eyes made their way to the crowd. He faced the crowd, fully displaying himself in a glorious yet egotistical fashion.
"Oh my god...it is.....it is Leonard Radcliff! The final contestant has quite literally risen from the flames and in a grand fashion." The rest of the crowd overwhelmingly agreed and roared with excitement upon realizing the identity of the mystery knight. "With the initial performances done, Nurse Joy will check the conditions of the Pokemon and eliminate the least appealing one of them all and will proceed to the final round."
Nurse Joy made her rounds to each of the Pokemon in their performing order. Geodude was given a thumbs up to recent "scuplting" that gave the rock type a powerful and cool appearance. Spearow was well received due to the costumed look that gave him a sea-faring bird look. Nurse Joy was proven to be most impressed with Dratini and its "tattoos".
"I see you painted your Pokemon here," she said pointing to the long line of tribal strokes.
"Yes I did. Pretty good job right? I wanted to use spray paint it didn't work out too well, so I did it the old fashioned way," Leon explained admiring his own work.
"Well, I must say your Dratini is in excellent condition. It has plenty of energy that is so for sure," she laughed as Dratini attempted to jump all over Nurse Joy demanding attention. "Definitely a happy one. Cute too." Leon simply nodded in response, proud of the work he put in. "What is the little guy's name?" she asked in a perky tone.
"His name is Drake. Sounds Draconic enough for a mighty dragon like himself." Nurse Joy smiled back at Leon, appearing to agree with him.
Upon completition of this task, Nurse grasped the mic quietly cleared her throat and spoke. "Upon examining the contestants, our two finalists are Rupert and Stonewall and Leon and Drake. These two will battle one another to display their combat abilities. They have two minutes to complete-"
"Hey wait wait," Leon interrupted. "What happens if Drake beats Stonewall before time is up?" Rupert stomped his foot in anger but Leon rubbed him off and focused on Nurse Joy who paused to think.
"I suppose that means Drake would win by default," she spoke into the mic seeming unsure.
"Works for me," Leon stated and faced Rupert. "Sorry Rupert, but your time is up. I hope removing that beard won't be too painful."
"I'll show you! Stonewall get ready!"
"Battle begin!"
"Drake! Release a Dragon Rage attack now!" Before the Geodude could react, a roar of flames was unleashed, consuming the rock type. After the smoke cleared, Stonewall was revealed to be alive but not kicking.
"Stonewall! Rock Polish!" With an amazing recovery, Stonewall's speed was increased, enough to pull off a second attack. "Tackle 'em!" Dratini, unable to avoid the attack, took the hit head on and was launched flying to the wall. Leon did not seem stirred and simply walked to the edge of the arena.
"Drake! Make some wind." Drake struggled back to a standing position and made a circling motion, unleashing a second more devastating twister. Stonewall was immediately pulled in and was sent soaring into the air, and crashed down into the ground like a meteor. For several seconds, Stonewall showed signs of will and attempted to rise from its earthly grave. However, upon rising from its crater, it fainted and was unable to move.
"KO! Leon and Drake are the winners. They move on!"
Leon walked over to Rupert. "Work on your attacking moves. If the best thing it can do is tackle, you'll never win a fight." Rupert was visibly angry, not so much at the prospect of losing but the bad taste in his mouth attached to it.
"Here is your Normal Rank Cool Ribbon presented by yours truly Nurse Joy," she proudly announced holding Drake in her arms as he leapt up there out of happiness.
Curious at the results of the other blocks, Leon made his way to the lobby and immediately noticed three trainers gathered together. Leon whistled and with great haste, Drake and Ray (the Pikachu) came to his side. "I am hoping you didn't cause too much trouble in the lobby Ray. You know what I told you about shocking little kids. Come on, let's see the other winners."
Walking calmly, Leon made his way to the three trainers with one sticking out like a sore thumb in a jester outfit. "So you guys must be the other winners? Pretty easy right? I kind of wiped the floor with my opponents especially in the battle all thanks to this guy here," he boasted pointing to Drake. "Anyway, my name's Leon. How about you guys?"
Tai let out a sigh of relief, he had actually won. Tai stood in the center of the lobby after exiting his locker room for a quick snack. Charco was now resting in his pokeball, Sprink was the next to be used. The first time he'll have used his newly caught Pikachu, and it'll be a contest. Tai sighed,
"I sure hope we'll do good, Sprink is only Level 3 and knows two attacks." The boy sweatdropped and almost dropped to the floor. He looked up to see the large screen buzz to life once more, he looked up to see the winners of the Cool Contest winners.
"Hehe. Great, both Nina and Edwin won." To prove his point Edwin appeared with a large grin, the boy quickly showed off his glimmering Cool Ribbon.
"I take it you've won the contest?" He asked Tai casually, the boy smirked as he closed one eye and gave a thumbs up.
"Of course. What'd ya expect, it's not like I was nervous or anything." Tai lied through his teeth. Nina soon took a seat next to the boy and sighed, she seem relieved and nervous...at the same time.
"Congratulations guys, looks like we all won." She said, Tai smiled and bowed.
"Of course. See, I told you there was nothing to worry about." He reassured the girl.
"I think we have to give it back once the contest is over" Tai heard Nina talking to her Rattata which made Tai grin.
Nina just sighed "So now what?"
"Well I guess we wait for the next contest to start. We're all still going to be in the same blocks with the same competetors, so make sure not to get them too pissed off. My block doesn't like me very much right now." Tai chuckled slightly as he turned to see a boy walking towards them. He walked with an arrogant demeanor and had hair the same color as Tai's, a rich gold. But the boy's eyes were the opposite color as Tai's, instead of a crimson red they were a deep blue.
"So you guys must be the other winners? Pretty easy right? I kind of wiped the floor with my opponents especially in the battle all thanks to this guy here," the boy immediately began to boast, which kind of annoyed Tai, "Anyway, my name's Leon. How about you guys?"
"Well I'm Tai. Tai Sugimori." Tai shook the boy's hand with a firmer grip than usual, "These are my friends, Edwin and Nina." Tai smirked as the boy greeted both of the trainers.
"Yeah. We're the winners from the other three blocks, they should be announcing the next contest any minute now." Tai looked up at the board, and almost as if on cue the board changed to show the next contest category. A ribbon appeared on screen, with the same physical appearance as the Cool Ribbon. The only difference was the color of its two tails, this new ribbon had pink tails.
"The Cute Contest huh?" Tai looked down at his pokeball, he unlatched it and looked into the ball.
"Well I'm gonna use Sprink, hopefully we do well." Tai sighed as he looked at the three others, "Well I'll see you guys later!" The boy smiled enthusiastically and ran into his locker room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Alright Sprink, let's do this right." Tai smiled as he pressed the center button on the pokeball, a Pikachu appeared and sat down on the bench next to Tai. The Pikachu had a mischevous smile and looked up at Tai,

"Alright Sprink, this is the Cute Contest. Luckily, you know Growl. But that's about the only Cute attack you know. Here, drink this." Tai held up a small bowl of water and put a small amount of Sweet Powder into the liquid and stirred it up.

"Sweet Water should raise your cute condition and this will win over the judges," Tai placed a blue ribbon on Sprink's hair, he fidgeted and proceeded to grab Tai's finger.

"Huh?" He said softly as Sprink proceeded to send an electrical current to Damion. "YOW!!" The boy screamed out and pulled away, the other two coordinators burst into laugher.

"SHUTUP!!" Tai screeched out, "So this will be our opening appeal for our entrance..." Tai's voice trailed off into a series of mumbles that only Sprink could hear. Meanwhile, Vivian the MC began the introduction for the Cute Contest.

"-First up in this Cuteness Contest is Contestant #2, you all know him already. Let's give a big applause for, Tai Sugimori!!" She extended her hand as a spotlight was dropped onto the parting curtains.

Back in the locker room Tai was still prepping Sprink, "-Then you strike a cute post and I land safely...Oh SH*T THAT'S US!!" Tai grabbed Sprink and ran out of the locker room, the Tinkerbell girl and superhero boy simply laughed.

"Sprink, go on ahead." He dropped the Pikachu on the floor and he dashed down the hall until he made it to the edge of the stage.

"NOW!! Thundershock!!" Sprink used his hind legs to powerfully jump into the air and release a rocket of electrical energy, the small burst of electricity arched in the air.

"Growl!!" Tai commanded.

"It seems as if our Coordinator is giving commands while he's still making his way towards the stage. What can he have planned?!" Vivian announced, Tai groaned as he ran down the hall. Luckily he had a conditioned body, or else this would REALLLLLLY be hard.

Sprink proceeded to let out a high-pitched squeel instead of his usual roar of a growl that managed to suck all of the propultion from the thundershock. The attack rapidly fell to the earth and broke apart in a small explosion, the entire arena floor was covered in hundreds of volts of electricity. Vivian proceeded to shriek and jump onto the Chariman's podium.

"Sprink, now land on your tail!!" Tai yelled out as he used his leg muscle to jump off on the edge of the stage, much like Sprink did.

'If Sprink doesn't do this on time, I'm toast...literally. Oh crap...' Tai thought as he was in the air, Sprink landed on his tail gracefully and began to absorb the electrical currents which ran through the arena floor. The small Pikachu began to light up like a bright christas tree, the entire crowd was amazed by its bright glow. As was the judge and MC,

"Amazing, it seems they've made the Pikachu a living lightbulb!"

"Pikachu!" Sprink let out a high-pitched squeel and winked as he gave a thumbs up. The ladies in the audience squeeled, as did MC Vivian. Tai landed on the floor next to Sprink, he suddenly lost his balance but quickly regained it.

"Hehe. That was close, now bow." Tai said as he struck his signature bow, Sprink did the same. MC Vivian tapped the floor with the tip of her foot to check for safety. She promptly landed on both feet and ran across the stage,

"UNBEELIEVABLE!! They have managed to use the ENTIRE stage for their appeal and pulled off such an adorable finishing act." She proceeded to rub Sprink's cheek, the Pikachu growled slightly. Tai sweatdropped and grabbed Sprink in his arms,

"Yeah. Thanks." He smiled warmly and proceeded to pull a rice ball from his jester hat, the boy munched on it happily and gave some to Sprink.

The two now stood in their appropriate circle and watched as the two other trainer's did their appeals as well. The tinkerbell girl has Jigglypuff and the boy had a Sandshrew, all three coordinators now stood in their circles as the chairman walked from pokemon to pokemon. Like always, Tai was last to be inspected.

"Well my boy, you didn't dissapoint. I've seen only a couple of good Pikachu's in my day, and I must say this might be one of them. The red sacs on his cheeks are positively glowing, and his tail is large, this is a very healthy Pikachu. I can even see the sheen on his fur, very well done Tai. What is his name if I may ask."

"Thanks mister Chairman. His name is Sprink, like the word Spark but I changed it a bit." Tai smiled as the Chairman proceeded to rub Sprink's cheek, but unlike the judge he liked the gentle massage. The chariman walked off and sat down on his podium,

"Well Mr. Chariman, what is your verdict?"

"The Two Coordinators to move on to the Second Round, are..." The Chairman spoke through his microphone and looked up to the large screen. Tai bit his lower lip as the screen changed from the ribbon to the familiar battle screen, the cute Ribbon mounted in between a picture of the Tinkerbell Girl and Tai.

"Taichi Sugimori and Corinna Shigeru!!" MC Vivian yelled out, the girl squeeled and leaped over to her side of the arena. Tai did the same, he tipped his jester hat and bowed.

"Corinna was it? Well, good luck to you!" The boy said as he ate the final piece of his riceball, the girl blushed and smiled as Jigglypuff floated into the arena.

"Sprink, center stage!!" He yelled as the small Pikachu dashed over, sparks flying from his cheeks.

"Cute Contest Battle, BEGIN!" MC Vivian shouted out.

"Puffy, Sing!" Puffy inhaled and began to hum slightly it's eyes closed.

"Sprink! Use Growl to drown out the sing!" Tai ordered, and Sprink let out a guttural sound that drowned out the song from his ears and lowered the offenses' pokemon's attack.

"Sprink, Thundershock now!"

The pokemon unleashed a pulse of electrical energy. The pink pokemon danced out of the way for a few seconds, then tripped, the thundershock catching up to it and slamming her to the ground.

"Puffy, use Disable!"

The Jigglypuff's finger glowed a light blue and the Thundershock was thrown back to its owner, the attack growing weaker and finally no longer there. The thundershock reduced to a small spark.

"Hold in there Puffy, use Pound and send him flying!"

Puffy shook her head to clear it, and then dashed toward Sprink, hands up. "PUF PUFF JIGLYY!"

"Now what?" Tai asked Sprink. "We've lost our best attack…"

"Alright. Sprink, use Growl!"

<Sure thing!> The Pikachu braced himself and opened his mouth at the advancing Jifflypuff. Jigglypuff charged faster, and its hand was inches away from hitting the Pikachu's face.

Suddenly, a loud roar pierced the pink pokemon's ears. The Jigglypuff did likewise, it's attempted Defense Curl no use against the high-pitched growl.

'This'll have to do until Sprink regains Thundershock. Shouldn't be too long now." Tai glanced up at the scoreboard, there was :10 on the clock remaining and the score was tied!

The growl ceased to come any longer, and the Jigglypuff planted her feet on the ground. Sprink smirked menacingly as sparks flew from his cheeks. Tai grinned wildly,

"Looks like your times up." Tai smirked. "Sprink, ThunderShock!"

<TAKE THIS!> The Pikachu let out a huge stream of electric bolts that struck Jigglypuff full in the face.

"Ack! Puffy!" her Jigglypuff was guttered down by the intense force of the thundershock attack. Puffy stood strong, she didn't get Ko'ed. But the time ran out, she had failed her trainer.

"The winner is Taichi Sugimori and his cute Sprink!" MC Vivian screamed out, Tai grinned as Sprink crawled up to his shoulder. Puffy was called back and Corinna proceeded to exit the stage, Tai walked over to MC Vivian and the Chairman.

"Why Tai! That's two ribbons in a row! Well here you go, I award you with the prestigious Normal Rank Cute Ribbon!" The Chariman handed Tai the ribbon, the boy grinned as he placed it in his Ribbon Case. He walked off stage behind the curtains and down the hall to where Block "C"'s locker room was. Corinna and the super hero boy sat down, the girl had her hands on her lap and held back tears.

Tai frowned and walked over, he kneeled down.

"Hey." He spoke out, the girl looked up from her legs to see Tai smiling. She held back the tears even more,

"Hey. Good battle."

"Yeah. It was, you're really talented. Don't give up, you'll win." Tai smiled and walked out of the locker room,

<That was sensitive, Tai.> Charco said from his pokeball.

<Silly Humans.> Gee spat out.

<You should've let me shock her.> Sprink chuckled, Tai even surprised himself. He made his way to the lobby and stood in the center, just like before. He waited for the scoreboard to come to life, but he noticed he had finished his contest early. The three screens in the lobby showed the three contests from Blocks A, B, and D.

He saw Nina, Edwin, and that Leanord boy. Tai was amazed,

"Their good..."

Edwin yawned. There was a conflict previously, when they had met with the last winner of the contests - an arrogant young man by the name of Leonard. And, of course, being the annoying person that Leonard was, he had to boast about his victory. That was the recipe for disaster. So he had retreated to a bench, farther away from the others, and began to brainstorm for the next round instead. Compared to a few moments ago, he had already cooled down to a manageable state.

It was strange, though, that he would have so many emotions, exploding in his sliver of the world to form a thousand different colors and feelings. Usually, it was a monotonous shade, ubiquitous throughout from dawn to dusk. But that was... when he still had a daily routine.

He supposed he had changed since then. Not just a little, either. Many things have made their mark in his heart; the adventures that he had gone through with his companions- his friends and his Pokemon. The unfortunate encounter with Team Rocket. The generosity of people that he had met. And of course...

There was that girl the trio had met in the forest, along with her friend.

He would have to try his very best.

"Now. Listen up, Pidgey. I have a plan." His voice was cold, but not in a bad way. There was steel in it, and determination.

A few minutes and a whole lot of paint (surreptitiously borrowed from an open storage room) later, he walked into the dressing room, bird perched on left forearm. He nodded graciously to the other contestants, extending a hand a second time.

"Good luck."

How was he supposed to pretend to be kawaii again?

Maybe he didn't have to do it.

"WELCOME! Audience members and contestants, this is the second of the Normal Rank contests! The CUTE Contest!" The announcer was cheerful as always as he began to explain the rules for a second time; somewhat redundant, though, Edwin mused. "Roooaaar! Same as last time, friends! TWO ATTACKS EACH, and NOTHING ELSE!"

The first round began with an explosive entrance by a tutu-wearing Nidoran, somersaulting into the air with a nicely placed Double Kick and spraying purple stars into the air with Poison Sting. Then, a Mankey sporting faux-claws made of plastic jumped into the arena, huffing.

Interesting. Adorable, even.

He didn't like it a bit when he had to do it himself.

Radiating a frost-filled aura, he entered the arena austerely. He had to suppress the nervousness; it was the worst enemy of any performance. Especially one that required him to act... in such a manner.

He shook his arm gently, the signal sent. Pidgey, resplendent in multicoloured paint dominated with green, spiraled into the air.

"Piiid-ey d-wants iii cwacker!" The catchphrase was unmistakable. The speech was a little difficult to decipher, but easy enough to make out eventually nonetheless. Smiling confidently (and icily, he noted, inwardly grimacing), he flung a cracker, previously taken from the refreshments table, into the air-

But it wasn't far enough. Not yet.

Swerving downwards from the skies, the bird whipped up a whirlwind of air and sand, forcing the cracker to move towards itself. A few seconds later, Pidgey neatly caught it in its beak, devouring the treat with a single snap.

The audience began to clap. The master of ceremonies was slightly stunned, but after the pause was of even better cheer.

"Very... impressive! The Pokemon talked! And certainly a riveting performance!" He bellowed heartily, ending his sentence with a deep chuckle.

They advanced, as before. Bill was almost laughing when he stepped past their display, when the round was over. He offered a comment to stop himself from an outburst.

"Try not to paint your Pokemon too much, eh? But, of course, you pass." Masaki grinned. "I wouldn't like to get paint on me, so you'll have to excuse me if I don't touch you, Bulbasaur."

And then... There was round 2.

"Alright, fans! It's time for Round TWO of the POKEMON CONTEST!" The master of ceremonies roared into the microphone. "CONTEST.... BATTLE! YOU KNOW THE DRILL!"

His adversary was the zombie boy and the Mankey, this time.

"Go, Focus Punch!" The boy commanded his Mankey.

"Focus Punch?" Edwin was puzzled. The Mankey shouldn't be able to learn Focus Punch outside of a Technical Machine, so was this Mankey that gifted, or...

In the heat of battle, he lost his concentration.

"Ice Punch!" A wave of blue appeared on the Mankey's fingers, a cold temperature settling down in the arena.

"Whaaat?! Impossible!" Edwin gasped. Two attacks at the same time?!

"Go, my Focuspunch! Make that plant eat your fists of ice!" The boy was certainly enthusiastic.

"Oh. Oh no. Dodge, Poppo!" Edwin commanded hastily. Synchronize our movements! Pushing himself to the side, Edwin was pleased to see that Pidgey did the same a little faster as the blue fist flew towards its body.

Connected.

He felt the painfulness of the situation as if he were in Pidgey's place.

As if he were Pidgey.

And this spirit was Pidgey's resolve, strengthening his in turn. It was a sign of the strong bond between them.

"Ikuze, Poppo!" Waving his Pokemon forward, Edwin briefly wondered why he sprayed that into his dialogue. Was he really a cliche anime hero? He discarded that. If anyone were a cliche anime hero, Tai would be the one, not him.

"It's only the Adagio of the concerto! Sand Attack!" He directed, finger outstretched. A whirlwind of sand fluttered over the Mankey, obscuring its vision.

"Nooo!" The shout came from the boy. "You have a Vital Spirit! Mankey! Your spirit burns strong!"

The Mankey stayed alert under the assault of sand, and readied another Ice Punch. But Edwin wasn't going to stand and do nothing in response.

"Gust for a super effective strike, Pidgey!" A vortex of air appeared on the arena, flinging the Mankey into its edge. The Pidgey stayed in the air in the eye of the fierce wind, which intensified, then disappeared.

The Mankey crashed down into the floor.

It was game.

Edwin was ready to collapse when he walked through the dressing room doors into the lobby a second time for the day.
