    Hi all.

My son has been collecting and playing for 2 years now, he is 9 now.
I thought it would be good to get into this so we can spend a little more time together (other than going to pay for what he wants). Now my problem is WHAT do I need to play with him?? He has about 300 cards so a starter deck isn't going to work.

    ANY Help would be great!!!

    Thanks

Wait a second - Why wouldn't a starter deck work? They're a great, if not the best, way to learn how to play the game. And even with my customized deck (over 5-6 years of collecting), I've been surprised by a pre-made deck on occasion. Granted that I don't play that often, but you're both starting on the same playing field.

Also, are you guys going to go into collecting, playing, or both? There's a lot of opportunities for both paths, and focusing on one doesn't mean that you have to do just that one. Odds are that there's a club near you where you can play against other people (of all ages!) and trade cards to improve your collections.

If you decide to start collecting and/or playing with your son, it'll be beneficial in the long-term to set boundaries for your collections/decks. Are you going to have a community collection, partially separated ones (like separated except when you're making decks), or no inter-mingling? If you don't set rules from the start, it's likely that you'll either get into arguments or lose interest in the game quickly.

    Have fun!

Well starter decks are real usefull you could use them as a starting point for deck building you can subtract and add other cards to it or you can just create your own its really fun once you get used to it right now im working on a platnium deck since i baought the two starter decks and a couple booster pack im going to have a good deck soon

My mistake guys. I dropped a "0" my little guy has 3000 cards (I need to cut his allowance). He has been playing after school for 2 years, so i wouldn't say we are starting off equal. He just plays with friends on the "school" league.
He plays a "ex" deck?? (I could be wrong on that). Can you buy a deck like this? I think we will be sharing cards, makes more sense to me rather than buying doubles of the same cards.

    thanks

You only need 60 cards to play a match, so you could use some of his cards.

Ok guys, OTHER than going with my little guy and buying him cards I have no idea what to do! Why not fire and water?? My son keeps rattling off about getting a good starting hand (is he playing poker?) And evolving quickly (Darwin's theory?) Like I said ANY help...lol

    Thanks

You can find a demo that teaches you the basics of the game at the TCG website. Here it is: https://go-pokemon.com/tcg/howtoplay/demo.html

What he means, is that at the start, he drew a good hand. You always start a game by shuffling your deck and drawing a hand of 7 cards.

Evolving is when a Pokemon changes form and becomes a different and stronger Pokemon. The TCG site (especially the demo) should give you some information on how to play the game.

The reason fire and water was mentioned has to do with types. Each Pokemon has a type. Usually, the Pokemon will have a weakness (listed on the bottom left of the card), and it will say how much extra damage the Pokemon receives from a Pokemon of that type. Fire Pokemon take more damage from Water Pokemon.

However, if you are still confused, a starter deck would be a good option, as it contains a rule book. The TCG site may also have the rules listed on there somewhere, but I'm not for sure.
