I had completely no idea where this thread belonged to ask an opinion on this, so VIP forum it is.

Basically, you may have heard about the new Pokemon shown earlier today at PokeBeach, well, there's more than just that. The site admin of PokeBeach recorded the footage in the cinema while the Zoroark movie was on and now people are "outraged", even reporting him to the Japanese police.

Do you think he did the wrong or right thing, putting the screenshots on his site? And should he face punishment and a jail period for that? Do you think we have a right to see the images, too?

I think it's a bit harsh. I mean any hardcore fan would leak out information to other hardcore fans. Japanese people need to learn how to share and release stuff to us at the same time, then we wouldn't be so eager to breaking the rules.

It's a little too much, in my opinion. Yeah, he might have done something wrong and stuff but well, 'ten effing years on prison' and a fine of 'eleven thousand effing dollars' is a bit too much, to be honest. We've got people who record and sell the whole movie over here. That guy's just nothing when compared to the guys we have over here. :(

Honestly, I think he deserves whatever sentence is given to him. It's illegal to film or take pictures of a movie in a theatre. It's a serious offense. Advertisement or not, if charges are pressed, it's his fault for disobeying the law. (Yes, the punishment looks steep imo but that's just how it is in Japan.)

I haven't actually seen the images yet. (Been browsing at work all day and have them turned off.) But whether it's an ad as people are saying or not, it's something exclusive to theatres so, aside from his candid photos, the only way to see this footage and content is in theatres, right? Thus if people see them outside of theatres online, there's less reason to see the 13th movie in theatres and some tickets are lost. It's grounds enough to press charges, really.

My favourite part is how well it captures the "ME ME ME IT WAS MY SITE THAT BROKE THE NEWS" mindset that fansites have. The webmaster sure broke the news and is getting all the credit for the exclusive photos but... at the cost of admitting to a felony. Good job. :|

    posting here because the pkmn general thread got closed as i was typing my reply lmao ;~;

I kinda see both sides viewpoints. He was really really stupid to not only do something like that, but then post the evidence online and claim responsibility for the crime. I mean, seriously, that's just moronic.

But, yes, the punishment is harsh. True, maybe that's 'just the way things are in Japan' but that doesn't make it more reasonable, just because it's socially acceptable. I mean, TEN YEARS? Ten freaking years? That's a HUGE part of anybody's life and he's, what, mid twenties I'm guessing? If he goes to jail, he'll be missing a hugely important part of his life.

The webmaster of Pokebeach knew that he was committing a felony, and went through with it anyway. He deserves whatever punishment Japanese law enforcement gives him.

And ten years is the maximum sentence, the actual punishment could be much less in reality.

I think he deserves it. I mean he knew he was doing something illegal (like other users have said). So he should get the punishment :/

He should have just made a youtube account with a proxy and uploaded the footage there and post in on 2ch like every other leaker.

We're putting people in jail over a Pokemon movie now? That's absolutely pathetic. I've seen people who murdered someone walk away with no sentence, and this guy might be facing jail time for recording a movie?

I think that punishment is in order, but not as harsh as he has it now. People have done much, much worse. It isn't like he recorded the whole movie and uploaded it... .

I don't see the problem. It's against the law in any developed country I know of to record the screen in a theatre. If he recorded part of the movie (even if it was mostly just an ad/trailer), how do they know he didn't record the whole thing? He committed a felony and, while I can see how people can think the consequences are too harsh, they are consequences all the same--consequences he decided to risk dealing with when he recorded the footage. And then he decided to broadcast to the entire world that he was the one who did it.

:( Whether murderers have great lawyers and poor prosecution is irrelevant.

That said, lmao, does anyone know what happened with this? I haven't heard anything past the initial accusations/threat of persecution. :s Did the guy get arrested? Were charges even laid against him?

The site admin's actions could be protected as fair use, depending on how Japanese law defines fair use. Usually, things like parodies, reviews, and critiques are considered fair use and do not constitute copyright infringement.

I agree that what he did was wrong, however I don't think a ten year sentence or anything is what he deserves. He did break the law and put online that he broke the law so he deserves any fines that he earned by purposefully breaking the law.

I think this commotion over pokemon is just ... too far, but at the same time, he broke the law.

Just like everyone else in today's society, I download music / games / videos but that's because I don't have any income. I've bought over 300 songs on iTunes, but the majority of my collection is material that has been pirated. I know that's not a good enough reason, but at the same time, I personally have a huge moral opposition to piracy. I'm surprised he actually pirated it, then posted it online AND people think the price is too high. -.-
