Castelia City, Unova Region
Outside of Olo's Bar and Grill
Emilia Cabrera sat out on therestaurants patio enjoying the cool evening air. She looked out over the ocean waves as shewaited for the friend she was meeting to arrive. She brushed back her medium length brown hairback behind her ear. She sat there lostin thought and thoughts about her missing husband. Her husband has been missing for the past sixmonths. His name is Dr. Hugo Cabrera andhis disappearance has been big news over every region, from Kanto to Hoenn, andeven Unova. He was popular because hehas had a widely popular nature show on the Pokémon Broadcasting Channel forthe past twenty-three years. She wasaware of where he was going to film the new season of his show. Everyone was surprised however that he hasgone missing because he was an expert in wilderness survival and a topPokeologist. This season he was going todocument the massive island jungle of Calusia. A jungle that was widely unexplored and unknown. Many people have gone there went missing andthose who have returned live in fear of returning.
"Emmy, how are you holding up?"A British-accented voice startled her. She spun to see the tall, well dressed frame of Porter Hysmith. He is an old family friend of the Cabrera'sand the producer of her husband's television show. "I'll survive. Nice to see you, Porter." She greeted as shestood up to hug him. He sat down acrossfrom her and sat a rather full manila envelope on the table in front ofhim. "So, why did you want to meet here,Porter? Any news on, Hugo?" Emilia asked. The look on her friends face told her that itwas a question without a certain answer. "Well, yes and no. What I amgoing to tell you is questionable, but it gives us all hope." Hysmithanswered. Here green eyes widened inhope of some kind of good news. The lastnews she got wasn't anywhere close to being good. It was the news that after five months ofsearching, The Pokémon Rangers were calling off the search. So the past month all she could think off wasHugo in the middle of the jungle dying all alone. "OK, what is it, Porter?" She asked during adeep exhale of breath to steady her excitement.
Porter pulled a large photo outof the manila envelope and slid it across the table to her. It was a satellite photo showing a riversurrounded by jungle on both sides. Asmall red dot inside a red circle appeared on the river. "What does this mean?" Emilia inquired. Porter pointed at the red dot and looked ather. "That right there is Hugo'spersonal emergency beacon. It started toping last night and has been going strong every second since." Porter said. She couldn't believe what she wasseeing. To her it wasn't a signal it washer beacon of hope. "Did you tell theRangers?" She asked. Porter nodded theanswer to her. "Yes, but the stupid gitsjust said it could be a malfunction and it could be nowhere near Hugo." Portersaid. "They told me they weren't goingto chase a dot in the jungle." He finished. She couldn't believe that. TheRangers just shrugging this off like that. This could mean her husband was alive. "So what do we do?" Emilia asked.
Porter than opened the envelopeonce more and pulled out the rest of the papers. They were files, files about people. Each was several pages thick with a photoattached to it by paper clip. "We golooking." He answered. Emilia flippedthrough all of the papers, studying each with great scrutiny. "Who are these people? Oh, I know Rodrigo and Janelle." Shesaid. Porter propped himself up on hiselbows and leaned in towards her. "Theseare the people that are going to help us get Hugo back." He said. Emilia looked at Porter with surprise. "I can't afford this." She said. Porter smiled and held up a pausingfinger. "The TV station is paying for itall, but we have got to film every second of our search." Porterexplained. Emilia felt tears welling upin her eyes. She couldn't help put seethis as a sign her Husband will be back in her arms. "Do you know and trust these people?" Sheasked.
"Yes, I do." He said. He wentthrough the files one by one. "AdwaleHassinga, the best camera man I know." He said holing up the photo of a darkskinned man. "Aubrey Dillinger, Top techexpert and medical expert to boot." He went on holding up a picture of aglasses wearing red head. "You know Rodrigoand Janelle. This man is Glint Bower, heis a….." Porter began. Emilia glared atthe picture with disgust. "PokémonTrainer." She spat. Porter placed thefiles back into the envelope neatly. "Now, I know that hiring an illegal Pokémon Trainer isn't right, but weneed a trainer in case we run into trouble." Porter said in defense. Emilia looked away from her friend. She wasn't angry because she knew he wasright. "I know, but I want to getsomeone else." She said. Porter wastaken aback. He wasn't expecting her togo along with it. "We can't. I already paid Glint and he is going to meeton the nearest island." He explained. Sheshot him a look that told him "I Don't Care". He can come along, but I want someone I trust." She said. She kept her eyes on his friend and didn'tmove them an inch. "Emilia, we have verylimited funds. We can't afford it,"Porter told her. She stood up and stillkept her eyes on him. "Then the Stationisn't paying. You are." She toldhim. Porter stood up to protest becausewho said he was going to pay. Emiliastarted to walk away. "Don't argue,Porter. You owe it to Hugo. We are also leaving a.s.a.p." She said as sheleft. That left Porter there to stand instunned silence.
Porter Hysmith stood on thedocks of the island village of Dunwood. The sun beat down on him as if he was some kind of food under a buffetheat lamp. He cursed that there was nosort of breeze or relief from the heat. "Blast, the ruddy heat!" He cursed at the sun. He heard a laugh come from the boat theyarrived on. "Ha Ha, maybe you shoulddress in something coolah, Mr. Hysmith. " The dark skinned man said frombelow. "And not in a black suit." He continued. Porter looked down at him. "I don't need fashion advice from you, Adwale. Just unload the camera equipment if youplease." He told his camera man.
"He is right you know." Awoman's voice said to his left. Porterlooked to see Emilia walking towards him. She was dressed in khaki shorts and aloose fitting white t-shirt. She madehim feel even hotter in his suit. "Well, like my dad always said, "Always dress to who you think you are."." Porter saidwith a smile. Emilia smiled and put herhand on his shoulder. "And your attiresays to me, you're an overpaid slime bag who thinks he is a billionaireplayboy, when he is really only a five year old in a thirty-five year oldbody." She said with a smile and a laugh. Porter laughed her off as he made way for Adwale and his cameraequipment. "So, any luck finding a boatto take us in the wilds of that jungle?" Porter asked her. She didn't look at him as she fumbled throughher own bag on the stack boxes they brought. "I told you, I only want one person and I found out that he is here andhe has a boat." She said as she began to count the money in her hand.
Porter looked frustrated as hestepped closer to her. She never stoppedflipping through the bills. "Darling, wehave a trainer already. A good one. We don't need another. Especially him." Porter said. Emilia looked him in the eyes with a look that froze him. "One, it's my husband out there that we arelooking for." She began as she poked his chest hard. "Two, I don't know this trainer. So I don't trust him. I know, Luster Dade, so he will be the onethat we get to take us in there. Yoursis free to come, but Luster will be in charge." She finished in a tone that putan end to the conversation. Porter juststood there with no words to say to her. He has known her long enough to know that when she gets like this, noone can win. He watched her storm offtowards the town, but within ten feet of the dock she turned to look athim. "You coming?" She asked. Porter then began to walk her way. He guessed that they were going to get herman.
It wasn't long before Emilia andPorter was standing outside the large metal sliding doors of a huge oldwarehouse. They heard the roar of acheering crowd inside. It was loudenough that the ground shook and the walls visibly vibrated. "What the blue blazes is going on in there?"Porter asked wonderingly. Emilia did notanswer him. She walked up to the doorand saw a sign the said knock first. Sheknocked hard on the door. After a fewmoments wait a smaller door opened and out walked an Asian man with reallyshort hair. Short enough that you couldalmost say bald. He walked up to themand stopped just a few feet from them. He stood there with his arms crossed and his head cocked to theright. He was sizing them up. "May I help you?" He asked. Porter was about to speak, but Emiliastopped him. "We like to get in please."She said.
Theman looked at her intently through his squinty eyes. "Why?" He asked. She just stared right back him, not moving aninch. "We'd like to see Luster Dade." Shesaid. The doorman's eyes opened a bitwider. "What business you have wit, Mr.Dade?" He asked defiantly. Emiliastepped forward a step and stared into the man's eyes. "We have a business proposition for him." Shesaid. He looked at her and nodded. He waved them both towards the door. They followed him into thebuilding through the small door. Thesight they saw staggered both of them.
There were rows of make shiftbleachers that rose to almost the ceiling on every wall. The only part of the walls that were notcovered in bleachers was the aisle that they were walking through. In the center, directly in front of them wasa ring. A wooden fence formed thering. They stood there and watched as aPokémon battle raged on inside the ring. The mighty pig Pokémon Emboar was locked in combat with the fightingtype Pokémon Hariyama. They were claw tohand in a test of strength and the crowd cheered them on. The trainers stood in boxes at opposite endsof the ring. "Where is Luster?" Porterasked. Emilia just looked at him andpointed the left side trainer box.
"So, when is the match over, manwhose name I don't know?" Emilia asked. Theman looked at her and smiled. "My nameis Tran. Match almost over." Transaid. "Want to wager?" Tran asked. Emilia waved him off and watched thematch. They heard words ofencouragement and orders yelled from the trainers. TheEmboar was clearly winning the battle of strength and then landed severalpunches to his opponent's mid-section. He then then flipped Hariyama over onto its back and quickly followed witha stomp attack. Hariyama quickly rolledit to dodge the Emboar's foot and quickly leapt up to his feet and with swiftfootwork grabbed it d leapt into the air. The Hariyama quickly shifted his weigh and direction in mid-air. It then drove Emboar into the ground with apowerful body slam attack. The attackcaused a massive cloud of dust to fill the ring and some filtered into thecrowd. The crowd roared with excitementas they waited for the dust to clear to see if the battle was over.
The fighting type Pokémonstumbled out of the cloud and part of the crowd groaned in disappointment. Emilia looked over to Tran and saw not anounce of worry cross his face. "Did youman win?" Emilia asked of Tran. Tranlooked at her and smiled knowingly at her. "Battle not over yet." Tran said. Just then, a mighty roar came from the shrinking dust cloud. Hariyama stopped and turned to look. He then felt the force of a massiveflamethrower attack that sent the Pokémon hard in the railing of the ring. Then the Emboar came charging at Hariyamawith a fist of fire. Before the dazedPokémon could gather itself it was way laid with a barrage of firepunches. Blood trickled down from aboveEmboars right eye, but that was nothing compared to how Hariyama waslooking. Time after time the pigPokémon's fist came crashing down onto the face of its opponent. Then over the crowd you heard the Emboar'strainer yell out, "Emboar, War hammer!" TheEmboar held the head of his opponent with its left arm and brought his rightarm back behind his head. The pig's fistbegan to glow as it formed into a huge hammer made of fire. With great force he swung his arm and nailedHariyama's jaw. The force of the blowsent Hariyama into the air and into the crowd. Emboar roared in victory and turned to return to its trainer. Emilia turned to Tran and smiled at him wanting. "Battle over. Now you can see, Mr. Dade." Tran said as he turned to lead them throughthe crowd.
The warehouse cleared quickly, but by the time they got to the other side everyone was gone. Tran however, kept walking to a small openingin the bleachers that looked too small to walk through. When he was just a few feet from the opening,Tran turned and motioned for them to follow. Emilia and Porter did as asked and they both moved forward. Once next to the opening they saw that it waswider than it looked. Just about sixsteps in; they came to a door, a door that it seemed that no one else knewabout. They exited the warehouse to findthat they were thirty to forty feet from the ocean once more and that a smallcabin sat on stilts and sat over the water. The front porch was the only part that was on land. Tran led them up to the porch and on theporch stood the Emboar that was just in the battle they just witnessed.
As they approached the cabinthey saw a large boat docked on the other side, it was double decked andcolored white and green. At the front ofthe boat in large emerald letters was the words "The Emerald Lapras". Tran motioned for them to stay outside as hewalked inside the home. They were leftalone with the flame bearded Pokémon. Blood was still trickling down its right eye. Emilia felt sorry for it. Her love for all Pokémon came from hermissing husband. She felt for thePokémon that stood before her. "I amtold you were looking for me?" A raspy voice said from behind her. She turned to see the tall, brown haired manshe knew very well.
Emilia looked up at Luster andsmiled, but was disappointed when he didn't return it. "Luster, I was….."She began. Luster just walked on past her and up to hisEmboar to rub some sort of paste on its wound. "No." he said as he rubbed the past on. The Emboar winced and grunted as he rubbed it on its wounds. "Quit being a baby, Wildfire. You know it heals you." Luster said as hespread more of it on his Pokémon. Emiliastepped closer and was amazed to see that the wound over his slowly began tomend right away. "Amazing!" Portersaid. HE came even closer and scrappedsome off on his finger and examined it. "What is exactly in this stuff?" He asked looking to Luster. Luster looked at him out of the corner of hiseye as he doctored the rest of his Pokémon's wounds.
"With a question like that, youare obviously not a trainer." Luster said. He grabbed Porter's hand extended the green cream covered finger andforced him to rub it on one Emboars wound. "Emilia, it is good to see you, but whatever you want the answer isno." Luster stated as he handed the bowlto Tran to put back into his home. Luster left the porch and headed for the warehouse once again. Emilia and Porter followed him hastily. "Luster, please hear me out. We need your help." Emilia shouted afterhim. Luster entered the door they exitedthrough and vanished inside. "Well, Iguess we won't be getting his help. So,we need to find someone with a boat." Porter said. Emilia ignored him and bolted towards thedoor. Once back inside she saw Lusterwalk across the ring with a hammer. "Hugo is missing and gas been for six months now." She shouted. Luster just kept walking. "I know, and I told him not to go." Lustersaid as he set to fix the fence of the ring.
"What?"Emilia shouted.
"You heardme." Luster said. "HE came to me herefor help. I got him what he needed andhe wanted me to guide them through Calusia." Luster continued. "He knew that Iwent in there to get berries and such. However where he told me where he was going I told him no and said thatif you go in that far you'll never come back. Apparently, he didn't listen." Luster finished.
Porter came up next to her andplaced a hand on her shoulder. "Let'sgo. He obviously isn't going to helpus." Porter began. "We will find anotherboat and we have Glint to help….." Porter said until interrupted bylaughter. They both looked at Luster whowas laughing loudly. "What's so funny, you bloody idiot?" Porter asked disgustedly. Luster turned to them and smiled. "You….HAhaHa……brought….HAAAAAAA…..Glint Bower to……..HA……help?" Lustersaid between laughs. "Good luck withthat." Luster said as he headed back to the fence. Porter looked at Luster with shock andanger. "What is that supposed tomean? Mr. Bower is a fantastictrainer. He is a three time PokémonWorld Champion back before training was banned." Porter Hysmith bellowed to theTrainer.
"Yeah, but if you go into thatjungle with your lives in his hands, you will not come back alive." Luster tried to warn them. Porter stomped towards Luster with mistrustplastered over his face. It was his moneyhe was spending on this expedition. Hedidn't need some criminal to tell him what to do. "Listen here you so….."Porter began beforebeing cut off. "NO, you listen, youdollar sign seeing creep." Luster spat as he brandished the hammer in Porter'sdirection. "I don't need to be told by someonewho obviously has no idea how to survive in the wild telling me my business. "Luster began. "A suit is a good choiceto travel into a jungle in." Luster continued. "Glint Bower is a good trainer, but not one I would trust, even to laceup my own boots. If you go in there withhim, I would bet only he would come back." Luster said. Porter looked shocked that any man would talkto him like that. "Luster, what do youmean by that?" Emilia said as she stopped him. He looked at her hands that were on his arms. He saw the desperation in her eyes. He gently pushed her hands away. "Emmy, I am sorry about Hugo, I am. But as far as he went in to that jungle. I don't see him being alive." Lusterbegan. "I beg you not to go, especiallyif Glint Bower is the idiot to guide you." He finished as he walked away. Emilia turned and looked at Luster as heleft. "Then help us!" She calledout. Luster stopped and cocked his heada bit to look back at her. "Leave, Emmy. Don't make Hugo's mistake." Luster saidbefore heading back out of the warehouse. Porter came up behind her and placed a consoling hand on hershoulder. "Come on. I am sure that there are others who will takeus." He said guiding her to the other exit. However, she knew Luster Dade was the onlyone they truly needed to guide them.
Porter didn't take long to find them a brave soul to take them into Calusia. Emilia sat on a trunk sad and nervous as she played the warnings thatLuster told them. Especially about theGlint. Even though he turned her downand was rather cold to her, she still trusted Luster. She was getting even more frustrated due toPorter arguing with the ship's captain. Apparently, the captain wanted more money than Porter wanted to dishout. "Well, having any luck?" A familiarvoice asked behind her. She lookedbehind her and was surprised to see Luster standing there. "Yeah, we found someone." She said toLuster. Luster came up and sat besideher. He clapped his hands and leaned incloser to her. "I know someone better,if you want." Luster said. Emilia lookedhis way with cold eyes. "Who?" She saidwith spite. She watched as Luster walkedover to Porter and the ship's captain. Porter was waving a wad of cash to the captain who wasn't takingit. Luster reached in and took the cashfrom Porter, causing both men to stare opened mouthed and wide eyed athim. Emilia stood up and felt a smilecross her face. "I figured, what kind offriend would I be if I let the most beautiful friend I have get lost in thejungle." Luster said as he pocketed the cash. Emilia leapt at him and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Luster." She said. He hugged her back and welcomed herkindly. "Get your people and gear to TheEmerald Lapras. And tell the suit andGlint that As long as you're on my ship. They listen and do as I say." Luster said as he began to walk away. Emilia smiled and went to tell them to get moving.
