Welcome to the developing region of Hiohlii [High-Oh-Lee], a recent addition to the Pokemon League. Trainers won't find many large cities here, except for one, but we won't be getting into that right now.
The observant trainer will notice that the gyms are a little unusual; the leaders don't limit their Pokemon exclusively to one element. One may find a gym consisting entirely of "weird" or "beautiful" Pokemon. It adds to the challenge and is one of the reasons that the Hiohlii region was accepted in the League.

Your story begins in a frozen wasteland of a town known as Acroma. It's the final stop for many earning their badges in this region. The only things of note are the Gym and Professor Alder's Lab.

Since you and your best friend Sam were younger, you've always been a help to Professor Alder. You've done chores, fetched samples, and the like and he considers you two to be his colleagues.

However, his finding has run dry and he is forced to move on to greener pastures, so to speak. You and Sam are obviously shocked by this. As consolation, he gives you both one of three Pokemon that had been delivered to him the day before: a Charmander, a Bulbasaur, and a Squirtle. He leaves after you choose one.

After talking, you and she decide to leave town and see the world, against the wishes of everyone else there. So you both run away, with the Acroma Police at your heels.
