Since there's only so much memory in a video game Cartage/Disk/whatever, it's been commonly known that pokemon cries have been stretched to fill in multiple pokemon throughout the generations, with slight differences to make them seem different.
Here's a list of some pokemon who have similar cries yet are almost completely unrelated to each other:

    1. Porygon, Victreebel, and if you listen Hard enough, Ponyta.
    2. Charizard and Ryhorn.
    3. Porygon2 and Girafarig.
    4. Polywag, Ditto, and Jigglypuff.
    5. Machop and Omanyte.
    6. Dustox and Grotle.
    7. Torchick and Bonsly. (Ok, I'm getting tired of the fonts...)
    8. Goldeen and Caterpie.
    9. Chansy, Pidgeotto, and Pinser
    10. Machamp and Slowbro. (When Machamp faints, its cry is exactly the same as Slobrows!)
    11. Mew and Paras.
    12. Vileplume and Aerodactyl
    13. Mewtwo and Parasect (Added by ~*HazaBaraFatle*~)

Feel free to add more to the list.

You forgot Mewtwo and Parasect and some of those are not true. Also there is a thread like this already.

As cited from Bulbapedia, there were actually only 37 cries inserted in generation one. Many of these cries were tweaked so that they wouldn't be so recognizable, however; some share the exact same cries. Gamefreak recycles cries quite often it seems and, for the most part, we don't actually take much notice. As cited from Bulbapedia again, they only added 30 new cries in generation two.

I suppose it was all careful planning. Sure, Charizard and Rhyhorn have the exact same cry, but for the most part, where would you run into the two simultaneously? I do believe Gamefreak worked within their sound limitations pretty darn well.

Sorry, I can't think of one you don't have up there.
    (Nice list.)

Oh, I didn't think about that one!
    (Plus one for you, huh?)
Also, I do believe the last thread on this was over a month old.

    Magikarp and Gyarados sound similar.
    (Though they are related)

Can you provide a link to that page, I'd like to see how much they added in Gen 3 and 4.

Fearow and Cloyster are very similair, only difference I hear is a change in pitch.

Since this discussion is limited to the Pokémon video games (I'm pretty sure every Pokémon in the anime has a different cry and, in the manga, cries are nonexistent) I'll have to move this thread over the General Pokémon Gaming as that forum houses gaming related discussions explicitly, not here.
