Want to ask this question because this is something I've mentioned in a couple of similar threads a while back and I was thinking about it a lot lately. When it comes to post-E4 content, Game Freak has done some pretty different things in each generation. They've given us new areas, sometimes entirely new region, while other times they've merely added a couple national dex Pokémon to existing routes and unlocked a few new legendaries.

RBY: literally nothing except one dumb cave
    GSC: kanto!
    RSE: battle tower/frontier
    FRLG: sevii islands!
    DPPt: fight area
    HGSS: slightly nicer kanto
    BW/BW2: black city/white forest
    XY: kiloude city
    ORAS: delta episode

Which game had the best post-game in your opinion? How about the worst? And which style do you prefer? Do you like the post-games that give you more to explore, or some kind of battle area, or a new story sequence? Post your thoughts!

    Emerald's Battle Frontier
It taught me competitive battling and breeding and it made me work harder and spend more time on it then any other pokemon game I have ever played. It truly challenged me, and I have never experienced anything in the main franchise games, outside of online competitive battling, that has challenged me as much as the Battle Frontier did.

OR/AS also had the Battle Resort.

I think G/S/C/HG/SS has the best post-game because it gives you a whole new region to explore (even though some of it was removed in Gen 2) and more gyms to challenge. I also like when you visit new areas that have Pokemon that aren't native to that region such as the Sevii Islands, the extended Safari Zone in Emerald, the second half of the Unova region and the Friend Safari in X/Y.

The game that had the most disappointing post-story in my opinion was Ruby/Sapphire because all there was left to do after you beat the game was a battle tower (which I've never enjoyed) and the ability to catch Rayquaza and Lati@s. It doesn't help that non-Hoenn dex Pokemon are unobtainable without trading which is the only way to get the National Dex.

HGSS had the best post-game, with the Battle Frontier and another region to explore. The battle frontier is my favourite and they should include one with every third game and remake.

The PWT wasn't bad though. I'd settle for something new like this every gen.

I love post-games that unlock new areas for the player to explore, that's why I like the Sevii Islands (as much criticism as they got) and the Black/White and the Johto post-games because they gave us fun new places to discover.

I also really enjoyed the battle frontier in Hoenn and spent endless hours trying to conquer it. We all know XY had arguably the worst post-game of all time but I'm really hopeful for Sun and Moon, I think Game Freak will learn from their mistakes and they've had a lot of time to develop these games!

I think in terms of progression ORAS had the best postgame, as it was a proper story expansion; similar to what Platinum had in the whole Stark Mountain thing, but on a grander scale. It was very cinematic and quite unlike anything we'd had prior to that, and it gives me hope for similar postgame content in the future.

But my personal favourite would be G/S/C/HG/SS, just for the sheer volume of content exploring Kanto again offered...as well as the nostalgia factor. Back in the day, it was like getting the old game bundled again with the new one, and I loved it.

HGSS is probably the only game where I did post-game. Honestly I'm not even sure how much going through kanto really counts when it comes to going through postgame with me. Most other Pokemon games I stop after I beat the Elite Four. Maybe play longer depending on how much I feel like playing the game once it's released. But after the new game hype dies down it really doesn't happen.

For me, Gold and Silver had the best post game content. Being able to go back and explore Kanto and take on the original gym leaders was awesome.
