Just wondering what is the difference between the two? Is there any particular reason that one has more PP than the other or are the game designers just complicated like that? My theory is Detect has a better chance of working in succession but that's just a theory. Why is it really?

protects works 100% the first turn too you know. they are the same as far as i know, just different names and offered to different pokemon though i wouldn't be surprised if some pokemon can learn both.

protect and detect are the same just like how aromatherapy and heal bell are the same..

Protect is better, it has 5 more PP's

I know. When I said "working in succession" I meant that it may have a better chance of not failing when used twice in a row or something.

No, they have the same effects. It's just that you can use both before their accuracies both drop to 0%, and Protect can probably get a few more uses if you retreat and send back in or finish battle and start new battle (in-game).
