Question: Question About Reps

I searched this section of the forum and couldn't find what I was looking for. (maybe I overlooked something)

I was wondering about the point system for reputations.

    1) On my account for example, it shows 2 people (or threads rather) who gave me a rep but says I have 11 points total. Does this mean that more than one person gave me a rep on those posts or that the others just didn't show up? Also, only one has an comment about the post which led me to believe that it was given by just one person.

    2) Does the point count total all reps period or just positive? (was not sure how the system worked in that resepect. whether positive posts gave positive points, and negative posts, negative points)

There is an answer for this in the FAQ that will help you know how the Reputation System works. To find the link to that Click Here.

Thanks for replying so quickly. I was curious and kept confusing it with the infraction system.

The Infraction System is irrelevant to the Reputation System. Infractions are not a good thing, and they can lead to a ban if you get too many infractions.

For example if someone kept spamming a thread, they would eventually get an infraction for that which means you did something wrong and you shouldn't be proud of it.

The Repuation System is red or green bars which you get from a person whom has an opinion about your post(s). Red reputation is bad, and Green reputation is good. You shouldn't worry about your reputation too much, but sometimes someone's opinion about your post can help you if they give you reputation.

Constantly being de-repped can have negative consequences, particularly weakening ones Reputation Power. Eventually, when you feel like +repping someone, it does nothing.

There's a limit between the amount of times you can rep a member. So no, unless that member repped you and then decided to rep about 30 or so other people, it's highly unlikely that the same person repped you. Any post you put out there has the ability to be repped unless you have your reputation disabled by a staff member, which is completely different from the method of hiding it yourself and is really only done when that member abuses the reputation system.

The point count totals all reps received with the exception of rep additions that have no reputation power. Reputation power is determined by a various amount of things: your reputation, your post count, the time you've been here, etc. When you are given reputation, your reputation increases by the amount of reputation power that someone has. When they leave negative reputation, unless they are an administrator, their reputation power is cut in half and reduces your reputation.

For example, my current reputation power is 28 points. If I were to approve of one of your posts, I would rep you and your reputation will increase by 28. However, if I find a post of yours to be poorly thought out and on the borderline of spam, 28 reputation points would become 14, and 14 would be subtracted from your total reputation.

You can always tell if it's a good reputation or negative one due to the color of the rep.
    Green - positive reputation
    Red - negative reputation
    Gray - neutral reputation

Hope I cleared up some of your questions. More in-depth information on your question and possible other questions can be found here.

    Gray - neutral reputation
A little more realistically, gray means they decided to hide their rep from the general public 'cause they are embarrassed of their red rep box. This isn't always the case, but, if you watch, it is true frequently enough to be worth noting.

We're discussing reputation given that you can see through the User CP. Not the reputation shown on the forums. But indeed, this is quite true. Many have their own reasons for hiding reputation, however...

This is true, but we are not discussing this. They generally can just hide it because they want to. If they give you positive reputation, it will not count if they are hiding their reputation. The same thing goes for negative reputation.

Reputation given by someone hiding their reputation counts just the same as reputation given from someone not hiding their reputation. Reputation given by someone with negative reputation generally is determined by their reputation power, but usually that member wouldn't have any reputation power by then.

Dude, I went from having 164 reputation points to 80-something in a day from people saying that my opinion is bad, etc.

I swear people just de-rep people for the hell of it.

If you think the bad reputation comment is not acceptable [as in something that doesn't worth giving bad reputation in] then you can simply PM a high staff member about it. If you are correct about it not being a fair de-rep, they will most likely remove it.

Oh, I know. When it first started happening to me (people de-repping for the hell of it), I PMed Lightning about it, but she never did it, so I just assumed she agreed with them or something.

Well I don't think you should assume that right away. Sometimes she can be busy and not bother to read it just yet. If it's been a while and she hasn't answered, you can defenitely PM someone else or just leave the bad reputation alone. Just make sure not to annoy the whole staff about it.

Yeah, I just left the bad reputation alone.

Lol, I have enough points for four green pips. For most people it's more "this is pointless".

    1) That's their opinion of your opinion.
    2) You mocked a guy who has AIDs, then continued to argue with everyone, how can you still not understand why you lost so much rep?

オレンジ is right, a lot of "grey reppers" are just people who don't care much for flagging their rep around.
