No, there isn't backwards compatibility between games.

It's jsut that if you try, you'll bug out your Gold/Silver or Crystal game

Yeah a lot of people had frustration about this, so thats why they came out with FR/LG/E/Collosum/XD so you can re-obtain the same pokemon you caught in G/S/C, over again.
