Hey, first post I'm new here. I've just been getting back into pokemon and I recently started playing. Almost to the elite 4 after a few days (platinum) and I'm trying to think of a team build to play competitively. I don't even know where to start (I was thinking maybe a sunny day based team) but I was messing around with marriland's calculator and here is what I came up with that I thought was decent.

    Kingdra (spec attacker)
    Lucario (phys. attacker)
    Froslass (mixed attacker)
    Solrock (lead / screener)
Ludicolo (wall) -- easily replaced with something else
Houndoom (spec attacker) -- same here

I feel pretty good about the first 4, but I'm not so sure about the last 2 (ludicolo and houndoom).

I was messing around on that calculator for awhile and I couldn't find anything that looked much better resistance-wise

    Any thoughts?

First off it would be very helpful for you to go check Smogon and read some articles to get started on competitive battling.

Ccompetitive battling (I am assuming wifi?) is much more than having a certain pokemon fill a certain role. To build a competitive team will take time, quite a bit of work, and some patience. You have to take into account pokemon natures, IV's, EV's, characteristics, and so forth. Pretty much it is guaranteed that an EV'd team will destroy a non ev team anyday of the week. Therefore I wouldn't really recommend battling competitively until you get the basics down and learn about IV, EV, breeding egg moves, natures, and so forth. Keep in mind breeding/battling competitively takes a lot of time and trial/errors. You will spend a lot of time trying to breed the right pokemon with the correct IV's, Natures, egg moves, etc... So you will be investing quite a bit of time. Of course using things like Power Items, and Vitamins along with pokerus can help speed up the process, though it will still take a lot of work.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've been reading a lot about IV, EV, and such. I didn't realize just how important they were though.

Poke Community also has a nice little sub-forum for Competitive battling and such with some very good sticky threads to check out on some of the very basics and also go with some chit-chat talk with other battler's, get a few tips in and also get your team rated once you start getting familiar with all the terms and such.

This thread I believe will be able to help you better than finding an answer here. Anyways good luck with your competitive battling. I'll be happy to battle you in the future when you want to.
