Red's Pokémon nicknames are taken from two syllables from their Japanese language-version names.

I don't fully understand Red's strategy to nicknaming Pokemon. Let's use Red's Aerodactyl for an example of what I do understand. I know that Aerodactyl's Japanese language-version name is Ptera, but I don't understand how that translates to "Aero". Does anybody know how Red's strategy to nicknaming Pokemon works?

It isn't that. Lax, Poli, Saur and Aero all don't follow that rule, so I don't even know why that's on the page. It must mean the names in the Japanese version, because there wouldn't be any reason to say this for the English one.

I think he just uses syllables from the Pokemon's species name.

^Uh-huh. The same applies to the Japanese names.
