hi, i hope i post this in the right forum.
is it possible to replace the player sprites in Heart Gold with a custom one and yes, which tool would be easy to use for a beginner?
    ty in advance!

I'll teach you how to change overworld sprites. Fortunately, it's nothing that complicated.

Step 1: Using Tinke, go to the folder a/0/8/, click the narc 1 and Extract.

Step 2: Now with kiwi.ds open the narc you just extracted, next click Select All and Extract Selected, wait until all files are extracted to the folder.

Step 3: With BTXeditor, select the sprites you want to replace, save it as a .PNG and use it as a base for your custom sprite. Ethan's is number 69 and Lyra's is number 70.

Step 4: Adapt your custom sprite, using the MC sprite as a base, each frame should be 32x32 pixels. Once you're done, index it, must be 16 colors including background.

Step 5: Go back to BTXeditor, open your custom sprite's PNG and save it as .btx. Don't overwrite the file directly from the program because this could cause problems with the color palette. Give it the same name but save it in a different place, then drag it to the folder where the other .btx files are and now you can replace it.

Step 6: Go back to kiwi.ds, click Tools, and then click Make Narc File, and then the ellipses next to the blank space, select the folder where the .BTX files are located, then click OK and wait until the process is ready.

Step 7: Using Tinke, go back to the folder address (a/0/8/) and click on the narc 1 again, then click on Change file and replace it with the narc file you just created. Once done, save the ROM and test it.

If you're wondering, it's the same process for SoulSilver.
