Approved: Retro Gaming Event Planning

Happy to help be a part of PCX this year! The first event that came to mind from last year that I didn't see mentioned by anyone else was one for a Retro Gaming Event, and since I enjoyed it so much last year (not because I won or anything…) I wanted to make sure that it happened again this year, even if I had to help out with it myself.

I think that the best way to do a Retro Gaming Event would to set it up similar to the ones hosted by Captain Fabio in the past. Two of them include the GT8 Asteroids Event and the Waka Waka Month Pac-Man Event held in the Video Games board.

There are a few good retro games that can be found at THIS website that can be placed right in the first post of the eventual thread. Right now I'm thinking that either Tetris or Frogger would be a good idea, as both award you a score for playing. This would make it quite easy to able to determine winners of the event. I was also considering Donkey Kong, but it looks like the lives counter doesn't work properly (if anyone else decides to test this out and finds that it works, just let me know).

Main post design/rules - DONE (completely completed)
Schedule/Cut-off date - DONE (will run for the duration of PCX)
Emblems - DONE (selections made, but hidden until winners announced)

I think it's looking pretty good- far better than anything I could do in CSS. The combination of the background and text color might be a little distracting though. Maybe darkening the background or changing the color of the text could work.

Also, we'll probably have to figure out a way to embed a Tetris game in the first post, unless you think that sending them to a page from a link would be fine.

I hope you don't mind that I've made a few small changes to the post design (it basically looks the same). I've been working on the intro/rules write-up the last little bit, and figured that I would add them to this post when I'm finished so it could serve as a sort of test post for anything we want to change or add later on.

Introduction
Welcome to the second annual Retro Gaming Event here at PokéCommunity, with your hosts Brendino and Luigi-San!
This year our blast from the past will be Tetris- "the Soviet Mind Game."
This simple, yet addicting game has been around since 1984, and has captivated the minds of millions across the globe.
Do you have what it takes to be the Tetriminol Titan here at PCX?

Rules/FAQ
How do I play?
Do you see the Tetris game at the top of the page? This is where all the action happens!
Controls are as simple as using the left and right arrow on your keyboard to move sideways,
pressing up to rotate your piece, and pressing down to quickly drop the block in place.
While there are many different versions of the on the web, in the interest of fairness and scoring,
this will be the only one that we use.

It tells me to select a level before I play. Which one do I choose?
Since there would be no real way to enforce this, we're leaving the choice up to you.
Starting at level 1 will net you a lower score to start, whereas level 10 will give you a higher point total.
Be warned though, the higher difficulty you start on, the faster the tetriminoes will move,
and the less advantageous some of the blocks will be.

How do I submit my score?
After your game is completed, you will be asked to enter your name on the "Game Over" screen.
Here you should enter your username (or at least part of it if it's too long),
and take a screenshot of it by pressing the Print Screen button (Command+Shift+3 on Macs).
Upload this picture in your entry post, along with typing your score and username.
If you would like to see an example, take a look right here.
NOTE: If you have achieved a higher score and would like to re-submit, just edit your original post.
Any subsequent posts will not be counted (this also shows us that you have read the rules before participating).

How are you judging scoring?
Scoring will be based on, well, your score.
In the event that two (or more) people end up with the exact same score,
the tie-breaker will be based on who got there in the LEAST number of lines.
This is because you are awarded more points by eliminating multiple rows at a time rather than individually.

How long do I have to submit my final score?
This event is running for the duration of PCX,
so you have until 11:59 PM EST on September 30th to enter.
No edits or entries will be allowed past this deadline, though,
so make sure you are aware of when the event is completed.
Any late entries will not count, and will get you disqualified.

Third Place - 00000

Prizes
The players that place in first, second and third place by the final day of the competition will be awarded with unique emblems.
But don't worry, all other players will be given a participation emblem for their efforts,
so even if you don't think you can win, we'll still give you a little something for trying!

I've updated my last post with the write-up for the event, so you can take a look through it to see if there should be any changes or something that I forgot.

I'd still like to be able to embed the game into the actual post, but I've been having issues with it. I know Captain Fabio was able to do it last year with the Asteroids event, but for some reason I can't get it to work. I'm going to try putting the code into this spoiler to try it one more time.

Also, did you have any preference for the style of emblem? I've made full sets for the ones I was testing in the last post, but I'm not sure which ones I like the most (or, if you wanted to give them a shot).

Speak to Hiroshi Sotomura as you have to enable the embedding from the admin panel. :)
Just point him in the direction of the game and he will be able to help.

Hmm... I guess that'd probably help.

Was going to ask how you got it done, anyways, but I wasn't sure if it was just because you were a mod and had more special powers :P

EDIT: Got all of the embedding sorting out, and now the game should work in the test post.

Once we've decided on what emblems we'll be using, I can't think of much more that needs to be done.

I like the first and third emblem sets. I think the third is a little more legible, though.
