We already have a thread to name what players have named themselves along with their Pokémon and rival. You'll find that here. As for what starter the rival may have and if they've ever lost to him, they can describe and tell all about that in the HeartGold and SoulSilver - Travel Journal. That said, just going to put the lock on this.
