This was apart of a novel/Novella I was writing for a creative writing class I took a few years ago. I jJust looked at it again, and I thought I'd try and continue writing it and editing it. This is my first time writing something like this on a forum, so hopefully it isn't too terrible. Critique is welcome and encouraged. Thanks for taking the time to read!

    ---------------------------------------------
    Prologue
I've always wondered why the Queen of monsters sat on a lonely throne, bearing a crown of thorns. I always wondered how someone so beautiful, so intelligent, and so courageous could be alienated. When I was a little boy, I asked her, "Why are you lonely."

She smiled at me… And didn't say a word.

"If you want." I said. "I can be your friend."

She knelt down beside me, a face of surprise and joy beamed at me. "Thank you." She said.

That was before I realized the true power of Vampires… You must never look into the eyes of a Vampire, because if you do… That gaze will forever rule you.

    Chapter 1
    The Queen of Monsters

"Wake…" A hazy voice that I could hardly make out called out to me. "Wake up…" It said, getting a little louder. "MR. ALEXANDRITE!"

I bolted up right in my desk, my eyes shooting open. I stared at my Algebra 2 Teacher, Mr. Hawthorn, whose nostrils flared with fury.

"I see Mr. Alexandrite." He huffed. "If your so confident in your math skills that you don't have to pay attention, please tell what you get if 2X + 5 = 27 without doing your work on paper."

"Umm…" I stuttered, my expression like that of a deer in the headlights.

Mr. Hawthorn sighed. "X equals 11. If you nod off again, you're getting an after school."

"Yes sir." I replied, completely embarrassed and half asleep.

Mr. Hawthorn continued his lecture, as I tried to stay awake. But why couldn't St. Mary's Academy have nicer teachers. The mere presence of Mr. Hawthorn alone was enough to make me die a little bit inside.

Finally! Resonating with the sounds of freedom, the last bell of the day rung, and I stretched and got out of my seat.

"Hey, Drew." A girl's voice called behind me.

I turned around to see a cute petite girl standing behind me. She had pale olive toned skin, with red hair and sapphire blue eyes. Her face was heart shaped, and she only looked more breath taking in the school's uniform, which consisted a maroon blazer with a navy tie and skirt that came down to her mid thigh, with black dress shoes.

"Hey Raven." I replied. "I thought you went home already."

Raven smiled. "I was actually wondering if you could walk me home today."

I bit my lip, possibly the cutest girl at St. Mary's Academy was asking me to walk her home. But unfortunately, there was something that I had to do…

"Sorry…" I sighed. "I have someplace I have to be afterschool."

"That's to bad…" Raven said, looking slightly disappointed. "But maybe next time, I'll see you later." Raven then grabbed her bag, and walked out of the classroom, leaving me the last one to pack up. Packing up my things, I finally made my way home to.

Belleridge was a pretty sleepy town, almost in the middle of nowhere. It was surrounded by pine tree, and even by rural standards, it was pretty quiet. Other then the shopping district and the town square, there wasn't much to do. Plus, it was so tiny; it was pretty much easy to walk to where ever you needed to go. Taking advantage of the nice September weather, I decided I'd just walk home at my own pace. I walked along the sidewalk, with the tie around my neck loosened slightly. On my way though, I couldn't help but feel like an idiot. I knew Raven since grade school, and we've always been good friends, but there were some other personal circumstances that prevented us from actually become more then friends, much to my dismay.

Finally having arrived to my destination, I gave a sigh of relief. It was a crumbling manor looking house, which had seen better days. The roof tiles were crumbling, the weeds that weren't growing out control were practically rotting, and the gate was almost rusted beyond recognition. Pushing the gate open, I continued onward. Most of the locals avoided this spot like the plague, because rumors that it was haunted, but there is more to this place then meets the eye. I pulled a skeleton key out of my pocket, as I made my way to what looked like a crumbling garden. Then, in the back of the garden, attached the walls of the manor, was a nice pristine oak looking door. This door, unlike the rest of the crumbling manor, was beautiful. The wood being high quality, the handle and knocker looking like expensive antiques. It was one of those things where you wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it, but once you knew it was there. You could always find it, even if you were half blind. I took the skeleton key in my hand, and stuck it into the door, and gave it a twist. With a satisfied click, the door unlocked to reveal a large dark spiral staircase that traveled deep beneath the earth. Swinging my book bag over, my shoulder, I sauntered down the stairwell, as the door closed behind me. The stairwell was dark, being dimly lit by several candles that lined the walls. For anyone else, they probably been scared out of there wits, but this wasn't a big deal for me… I was used to it. I emerged out of the stairwell into a large foyer, with marble tile floors, and large ceilings. It was large enough to contain several houses, and even held several decorations that could be considered museum quality. There were several large paintings that decorated the walls that looked like they came right out of the renaissance, depicting surreal looking angels, along with men and woman wearing clothes that you would expect English aristocrats to wear.

"Welcome back, Mr. Alexandrite." I turned to see a handsome young man, who looked no older then 21 greet me. He had blonde locks, with pale skin and bright blue eyes. His features were flawless, and he could've easily been a male model if I didn't know any better. He wore a black tailcoat and trousers with a black tie and brown loafers.
    `
"Um… Hey there Grey." I replied awkwardly, almost cringing at being called "Mr. Alexandrite."

Taking my bag, Grey spoke. "I'll go ahead and take your things to your room. My lady expects to meet with in her study, it'll be for the best if you don't keep her waiting."

    "Got it." I sighed.

I made my way down a hallway, which branched off of the foyer. The hallways were just as pristine as the foyer, being brightly lit, and decorated with antique looking artifacts and paintings. I made my way down to the farthest door in this particular hall, before knocking on it.

    "It's me." I said.

"Come in." A girl's voice called.

I entered the study, and their stood a girl who only looked slightly older then I was. However, her beauty was almost of that of a goddess. She had flawless pale skin, without a single blemish, she had straight waist length blonde hair and long bangs, and an hourglass figure. Her face was beautiful, with slightly strong and sharp features, and a pair of beautiful and powerful red eyes looked at me in response. She wore a simple cream-colored turtleneck sweater with a black short skirt and black dress shoes.

"I wanted to talk to you." She smiled wryly. "Please, take a seat."

"Sure thing, Millia." replied as I took a seat in front of her desk.

The study was a cozy room, with a fireplace and several lamps to light the dark, along with bookshelves that were literally cramped with books.

Millia took a seat in the large and ornate looking office chair behind her desk.

"Your probably aware that my position puts me in a state where many others would benefit from my death?"

    "Yeah." I replied.

Millia sighed. "Both humans and non-humans alike would like to see my head on a silver platter. Well, it seems as if someone is leading a group to kill me, based on our latest gathered intelligence. I'd thought I'd try and warn you and tell to keep a watchful eye out for anything suspicious."

    "Is that all?" I asked.

"No." Millia said, biting her lip. "I was just hoping we could talk for a little bit. It feels like you don't want to see any more. I guess it feels like your growing a little more distant."

"Don't worry." I assured. "Even though it was so long ago, I promised I'd be your friend… After all, if it wasn't for you. I probably wouldn't be alive to talk to you right now."

Millia smiled. "I still remember when you were a little boy, you were so cute. So innocent. I guess it's nice you've grown into such a kind young man… But…"

    "Millia…" I said

The door burst open, as two maids came in.

"Princess!" One of them called. "There are intruders in the manor, you must leave at once. We'll escort you out of here at once!"

"Yes Princess!" The other maid urged. "It's not safe!"

Millia stood up, cracking her neck. "Funny." She smirked. "I knew for some time now, that we had rats lurking in this manor that were out to kill me. But I didn't think they would be so fool hardy to come right up to me and ask to be slaughtered."

The maids grinned manically. "So you already knew." They both said in unison.

    "Drew, get down!" Millia ordered.

Having no time to think, I immediately ran for the wall and ducked. I then watched as Millia lifted her large desk like it was nothing, and tossed at the maids. The maids quickly dodged, causing the desk to snap into small fragments of wood upon hitting the wall.

Working in unison, the maids then lunged at Millia. Millia dodged their strikes with the beauty and grace of dancer, before delivering a powerful kick that sent the both of them through the wall.

I stared in awe as one maid was reduced to dust, and Millia picked up the other maid by the neck, causing her to grasp for air.

"I knew for sometime that assassins were spying in the manor, hoping to kill me. I didn't think they'd be as stupid as to take me head on like this."

Millia gave another tight squeeze the maid's neck, causing her to try and gasp for air.

"Why don't you know your place?" Millia said with a frightening cold glare.

She then squeezed the maid until she exploded into dust. Millia then licked the blood off of her blood-covered finger. "Such a disgrace to all Vampire kind." She thought aloud.

Millia then walked up to me, and gave me a gentle smile while holding out her hand. "Can you get up?" She asked.

    I nodded. "Thank you."

"I'm sorry I put you in such danger…" Millia said darkly.

    "I'm fine." I said.

Millia then grabbed my hand, and I saw that it was bleeding.

    "Your hurt." She worried.

"Um…" I stammered. "I'll be fine. I'll go wash it out."

    "Okay…" Millia replied glumly.

I left the crumbling study with the wall that was now destroyed beyond recognition, and walked down the hall. I guess someone could say that this was my secret. I lived and knew the existence of Vampires. But the secret, that know human being must ever know. I wouldn't be here today if my life wasn't saved by the queen of Monsters herself… Millia Scarlet...
