Hey there people, I'm looking for a new fan game to try out, but I haven't found any that appeal to me. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but here's what I want to see, or more accurately what I don't want:
No arbitrarily high difficulty floor - I've been disheartened to see so many fan games sell themselves on how hard they are, occasionally calling the official games bad for being too easy. I get that the authors and audience for these strenuous games would like a challenge worthy of their grown-up skill level, but I don't want to spend my free time beating my head against the wall until something breaks.
No relentlessly bleak/edgy plots - I understand the desire for more mature storytelling, but I don't think making the tone pitch-black achieves that. The sullen and cynical undertones I've seen clash with the otherwise bright and colorful Pokemon aesthetic, making the whole endeavor come off as more pretentious than anything else.
No ROM hacks - Legality notwithstanding, I don't want to step in a potential minefield searching for base ROMs and emulators.
With all that said, I'd love to see your suggestions.
